Welcome to YesterKitchen! I"m Jill! I am a culinary storyteller. I love sharing dishes from the past with their stories and hopefully sparking some childhood memories along the way! I'm always cooking retro dishes and telling their history from the 1930s - 1980s! Too young to remember? Come learn history through food! Because...EVERY dish has a story! Have you ever wondered where Fettuccine Alfredo came from? What about Thousand Island Dressing? Why was fondue so popular in the 1970s? Do you love retro/vintage cooking? You came to the right place! I post new videos every week! And, there are tons of retro playlists to embrace the past! Come experience the dishes you grew up with! I’m so excited to share my passion for bringing history to life through the art of food from the past.
I'll see you in the next video!

Coming in May! Every Dish Has a Story!
I’m from Pennsylvania, and my mother taught me about this recipe. so I guess it did travel because my mother knew about it.
I just made a version of this..... taco meat, lettuce, onion, cheese, tomato, noodles, western dressing, and crushed chips added to each serving. Works better if you let the meat and noodles cool.
Thanks for the recipe. I've made it many times and my children beg me to make it each summer!
My pleasure 😊
I had this growing up I'm in sanjose ca
I grew up in Iowa and in the 80's you could buy this from the Hy-vee deli.
Where's the onion lol
😮too Quick
Socal here from Palos Verdes and mom made this all the time and I still make it to this day only difference I add avocado and dollop of sour cream, yummy
Hey! Been in PV so many times! Even past my childhood my son played football against PV! Lol! Avocado and sour cream are great additions! If you're familiar with my channel, I always make the original recipe but love to hear how they evolve do the many families that have them!
@@yesterkitchen I'll checkout your site
@yesterkitchen checked out your site and already found something I haven't had in years the Watergate salad, oh and after being a third generation Californian I'd had it and moved to beautiful idaho in 2020 it reminds me of California back in the 60s pure heaven. My names Tommy Bowling
@@optitom9033 hi Tommy! A very classic dish. I too moved from CA to Idaho... Funny.
@yesterkitchen best move ever bought a new home in a great little town called Buhl people are friendly and Ridleys is a great family owned market
We use Western dressing...that's probably a Midwestern thing!....and crushed Doritos.
I put the corn chips down first, then the meat, then top with the lettuce. Sharp cheddar cheese is the best!
If you would be so kind to repeat the name of the original breading flour mix that would be great. Thanks for the inspiration to make these. I’ve not had Shakeys in 25 years. BTW great video 👍🏻
Thank you! I use Louisiana brand but really, any chicken fry packaged breading will be perfect
This was really popular here in Calgary Alberta in the 80's. But we didnt toss the ingredients, we served it as a layered salad in a big trifle bowl - with nacho cheese tortilla chips. It was so beautiful - so delicious! We used french dressing - i would like to try it with Catalina. Thanks for posting!
So happy to learn it made its way to Canada!
That looks good. We had a taco salad growing up and it turns out that only someone in our family can make it. My husband.has tried twice.
We were raised on this salad too! My husband likes it! We use French dressing. I grew up in North Orange County.
Not too far from where I grew up!
I miss you so much, Jill!
Corn Floats!! So wonderful to see your name! I'm doing well and I hope you are too! And I miss you too!♥️🍸
I just want boyensberries in the east. I grew up in Orange county. Too bad the Knotts family sold out. We used to spend all day there for ZERO$$$. now you have to mortgage your first born to get in.
I want them too! I spent so much time there when I lived there! Yep zero $$$ At least you can buy boysenberries frozen and make the pie! 😊🥧

Wonder if Sophia ever actually got credit.. surely not from the thieving chef, They are famous, or, infamous for taking someone else's recipes, tweaking it and calling it theirs. 😂😂😂 Just supposed to be a chuckle.
Lol! Yes, she definitely got credit for bringing it to popularity via the hotel! Different time back then. 😊
Lol! Sophia definitely got credit! The original name was Sophia's sauce, her contribution to American culinary will live on! Promise!

Can you use hot milk instead of hot water?
Definitely not, it will not work.
I remember this coffee cake from my junior high school days in the early 80s. It cost 25 cents and was so good. Now can you recreate the rectangle pizza slice from school?
Sorry you have left but I understand. I have been remiss in all areas this past year as my living conditions have changed. Mercifully. I graduated high school school on 65 and had son in 66. Hello world. We lived with my widowed mom for no of years but mom had loved cooking early on so I picked up the bug. At that time in school education girls got sewing (junior high)never liked ever) and cooking. LOVED. I may order your book. Another woman finds retro cook books (by the book - I think) and duplicates exactly. You would like. Thank you Jill
Thank you so much for sharing your story! Wow! I too add cooking and sewing in middle school. I was quite bad at sewing, lol, but as you can imagine loved cooking! I may have stopped filming but I'm definitely here reading comments! Thank you so much for yours!
Eastern Texas abuts Louisiana, the same climate, Cajuns influence spills over its different from West Texas.
I love that bread but I just don’t remember it like that though.
You may be thinking about the coffee cake which was way more popular. I have that video on my channel too! 😊
I didn’t ask for a f*****’ cooking lesson. WHAT’S the origin of the name “Sloppy Joe”? Answer the goddamn question and be done w/it. Your best GUESS is that some guy named “Joe” came up w/it in Sioux City, Iowa. F***, I coulda’ come up w/THAT! Stop the clickbait. Just say “I dunno’.” (I know, nobody’ll watch you cook a sandwich then)! Sorry to have ever been a burden to your game. I’m DONE! 👎😐

Miss Jill Girl, I wrote to you, about making popcorn balls, I I resonley made these with my niece's 10 yr. old and didn't do a good job when I added the caramel, I'm not a good at baking at all. I only make something sweet when I see a cook make this. I wrote about cracker Jack's, in the 60s a box was 25 cents. they had tiny great toys, and even great stickers that me and my baby sister would spit, yes I said it!.☺️and slap the image on our arm.and a other thing my next to oddest sister would make caramel apples. now that's something I love to make, how about making this.
Hi Pamela! Oh yes, I absolutely remember! And I love caramel apples! Unfortunately, I stopped filming about a year ago. However, my vintage cookbook collection is in the thousands and I do have recipes. If you want to look in the about section on my channel and send me an email, I'll be happy to look up a recipe for you and send it your way. They are really quite easy.

Remember when Creacker Jack's, with peanuts at the Ben Franklin was 15 cents. and the toys inside the box was awesome!! .now its just plain old stickers ahhhh,!.caramel popcorn is like going to the carnival in the summer time and riding your favorite ride, when I do make it, I use smuckers caramel sauce. I usually buy 2 jars. and add the peanuts 🥜.
Oh I love the caramel sauce idea! And yes, I miss good old cracker jacks. I didn't know they downgraded the prize. Such a bummer.

back in the 40's my parents would take us to Spengers Restaurant in Berkley,CA where we would have Hang Town Frys using Olympia oysters instead of the regularly served Eastern Oyster. It was served with a side of tarter sause. My mouth waters just thinking about it.
I love parents stories! Thank you for sharing!!
Why are they called mojos
There is no history on that. I wish there was and I would have included it in the video. So all I can offer you is my best guess. The term Mojo is a reference to Magic. And since these potatoes are Beyond delicious I would say that they felt like they are magical and we're given the name. But regardless what the name is, they are magical! I hope you give them a try.
