1/3 cup onion, finely chopped
1 tbs butter
1/2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp vinegar
1/2 tsp seasoned salt
dash pepper
2/3 cup sour cream
2/3 cup (5 oz can) sliced water chestnuts
2 oz jar sliced pimentos
Cook beans in salted water according to package directions. Drain. Sauté onions in butter. Add sugar, vinegar, seasonings and sour cream. Heat but do not boil. (sour cream will curdle). It's -Friday- Jillday!
My mom put water chestnuts in many things --- green bean casserole, cheesy broccoli rice (Cheez Whiz!), Thanksgiving stuffing, chicken tetrazzini and, a Yesterkitchen blast from the past, Bacon Nuts. I think she thought she was being a little exotic by using them.
I love everything about this! Never have I heard Jillday and I must admit, I love that!! I'll be sure to share with hubby that there is such a thing! LOL!
Everything you mentioned, especially CHeese Whiz, just makes me smile! And I just made Bacon Nuts a few weeks back for company! Always a winner! So grateful you are here Leguminator! Have a beautiful weekend!!!!
Green Beans is one of my favorite vegetables, love them since my Childhood!!! Delicious recipe my Soul Sista!!!
Really?? Oh honey, you will love these!! Thank you my beautiful soul sista!!
I've had green bean casserole many many times, but never one with an Asian influence. Interesting and I'm sure I would love it! Love sour cream and water chestnuts. Cheers Jill 🍸
Hi Rus! This is a good one! SLightly influenced, lol, but delicious nonetheless! Have a great weekend my friend!!! Cheers!! 🍸
What a fabulous side dish I love green beans and I would never have thought of this combination of ingredients I love this one, awesome cooking Jill!!!!!!!!!!
Its such a great one Patrick! The past will never let you down!! 😃
HI, I just found your channel in my recommended list, watched a few in your vid list and subscribed just now. You are such a fun delightful person.😊👍 My late Mom came over to this country in 1927 as an infant from Poland and somehow became a fashionable late 50s and 60s cooking Mad Men housewife here in Chicago LOL. She was always making something from magazines of the day or cookbooks back then. This channel reminds me of her with those recipes. I was born in 1958 and am having the best time looking at your Video playlist to figure out what to watch next. TY so much for a wonderful trip down memory lane. You have a great personality and your enthusiasm is infectious. Take care. Rusty
Hi Rusty! Welcome! I am honored that you found me! And even more honored that this channel brings back childhood memories! That is so much of what YesterKitchen has become and was the inspiration for my book, Every Dish Has a Story.
I love hearing everyone's stories and how fabulous that your mom became the "modern housewife"! I have no doubt that you ate quite well growing up. I know you will find lots of childhood food memories here! Thank you so much for your kind words, this is my absolute passion. I look forward to hearing from you again!
@@yesterkitchen TY👍 Nice weekend to you
The sliced waterchestnuts brought back memories of cooking "asian" food in college and grad school...fun times!
Hi Harry! Yep! The quotes definitely need to be around "Asian". Or back then "Oriental". 😊
I am officially old, I have a copy of that cookbook 🍸
Hi Peter!!! LOL! Nah....age is a state of mind. Have a great one my friend!!!
Hey, Jill 🌻🍁💖. Wow! What a wonderful little cookbook! This sounds pretty good to me! Couldn’t cook this for my crowd, here in the south, cause we gotta have our green beans soft and cooked to death 😂🤣
Hi Phyllis!!! Such a special little cookbook! Sorry it won't be south approved. LOL! Its different and really good! Go forth and change their minds!!! You can do it! 💗
Hi Jill, I've made this and we loved it. Its different and as you said fusion, but it all works together. It would be a great change it Thanksgiving instead of the classic green been casserole. I have many cookbooks too and some of the ones you showed on the screen. Take care.
Hi Jade! So great to see you back! How wonderful that you have so many of the cookbooks! You are a girl after my own heart! I love that you have made this! You are so right! It would be a great change from the original! And I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I did the history of the classic Green Bean Casserole a long time ago.

I'm sure you saw it, but I know others read the comments so had to share! Have a great weekend!!
So much yumminess! And sherry vinegar makes everything better.
And yes to meatloaf and Meatloaf. Love them both.
So much yumminess indeed!!
I remember Carnation instant breakfast being in my grandparent's cupboard, all the time. Right along with the Tang.
Personally, I'd like to use fresh green beans in something like this. Would probably want to blanch them first at least, if not cook them separately. But I bet it would be worth the effort.
I forgot all about Carnation Instant Breakfast. Thank you for the memories! I made them my regular breakfast for a long time when I was a teenager!
I always honor the original recipe but would love to hear if you make this with fresh beans, I know it would be fantastic!
Hello Jill 👋, Love those vintage cookbooks you have. Too bad my mom wasn’t a cook. She worked. So my Grandmother or my stepdad cooked. Then when I was older my mom would bring a recipe for me to make. Lol 😳😬. Have a good weekend my friend. 👍😎👍♥️✌️👊😁. Looks good to me ! 👍🥰. Love easy recipes 👍👍
So happy that you had your stepdad and grandmother!! Sounds like the food was made with lots of love! And I love that your mom would bring you recipes to make, that is so special! Have a great weekend my friend!!
Hey Jill this is the craziest recipe I think I've ever seen!! WOW....but if you say it's good.....I know it is!! The Meatloaf pic was awesome LMAO!! Hope all is well girl. You're the best!!
Hi Rob!!! Its soooo good! But I've done crazier! LOL! One of my fave crazies is the Flaming Cabbage! czcams.com/video/3vY2yisJx9M/video.html
Thank you! I can't take credit, I have an amazing editor that picks up what I say and runs with it! You're the best my friend!!!
Very interesting recipe! There is a recipe I have been looking for and not sure if you have heard of it. It's an orange jello salad. I remember it has mandrin oranges in the jello then after it's set it's topped with what I think is a combination of cream cheese and mayo then there is chopped nuts and grated cheddar cheese sprinkled on top. I had the recipe at one point but have since lost it. I would be so grateful if you have the recipe or have any idea what all goes in the recipe if you could make or post it. Thanks so much.
Hi Jimmy! Thanks for the request. I am in the process of moving right now but once I settle down I will take a look for you and see what I can come up with.
@@yesterkitchen Awesome! Thanks so much!
I used to have a great "International Cookbook for beginners." It had chicken Montezuma (first recipe I tried in the 90s.) Also had ricotta stuffed squid, and the best Moussaka recipe. Do you have that one? I've been trying to find a copy for years. (don't want it, but would love that Moussaka recipe back)
Hi Jim! I have not seen that cookbook. :( I love Moussaka and the ricotta stuffed squid sounds great!
@@yesterkitchen it wasn't. Such a hassle. Lol.
@@jrassinier :(
I wonder, have you came upon a recipe that sounded good.. but when executing the dish.. turned out awful? My mom has tried a few recipes that sounded good.. but after making it.. she promptly took a few bites and tossed the meal as it was bad. I know some retro cookbooks have bangers of recipes, but the off ones.. are really off. lol
Hi Rion! Oh yeah, for sure! I test out every recipe I present and I have come across a few. But surprisingly, just a few. Most are exactly the delicious dish I expect. I always want to make sure you will love every dish I make so you can experience history through food at home!
It would be interesting to see a video of all the failures.
