Here’s your recipe!
2-4 russet potatoes, washed and sliced evenly 1/4" thick
3 1/2 oz fried chicken breading mix
1/2 TSP salt
1/4 TSP pepper
1 cup milk
Vegetable oil (enough to cover bottom of pan 2" high)
Place sliced potatoes in microwave 3-7 minutes until softened, careful not to burn. Heat oil in pan until starts to bubble when a corner of a potato slice is put in. Mix breading with salt and pepper. For each Mojo, first dip potato slice in milk, then in breading. Drop into hot oil and cook 1-2 minutes, turn over, cook another 1-2 minutes until browned. Drain on a paper towel lined plate.

I worked at Shakey’s for years. We would put our sliced potatoes in barrels of water and refrigerate overnight. After putting them into a cylinder with holes, we would set it in a tub of breading mix and turn and toss till every slice was coated. Then placed into a pressure fryer and cooked for (?) minutes, I forgot how many. Drained and served with 1000 island, ranch dressing or catsup. 😊
Wow, thank you so very much for sharing the true process! Interesting!!
My older sister worked at Shakey's in the 70s met my brother in law there lol, love the potatoes
I grew up in Redlands, California we would go to Shakeys every weekend! I missed Shakeys and Redlands.
Hi Stacy! Yeah, such a bummer the chain has shrunk. At least you can make these at home and have some childhood memories!!
I don't fry stuff often, I have a small apartment and my place smells like fryer fat for a few days after. Because of that I dedicate a weekend or two a year during cool weather and fry my little heart out --- fried chicken, Buffalo wings, onion rings, french fries, Rolaids --- I'll add these to my next frying weekend for sure. I love fried food too much!
I don't blame you! That smell does stay around for a while. But man do I love fried food as well! I am beyond honored that I made your list! You will not be disappointed! Fry your little heart out! 😊
Shakey's pizza looks like such a great place and those Mojo Potatoes OH YES another must try dish they look fabulous Jill!!!!!!
Patrick! Oh it was such a great place! When I'm back in Palm Springs I'm going just to see if it's what I remember. But these potatoes...... sooooooo good!
As a kid, we went to the Shakey's Pizza on Little Creek Rd, Norfolk, Virginia. We always had Pizza, never knew they had any other items on the menu. I will give the Mojo Potato's a try. By the way, my mom has a set of those bowls, each bowl was a different color. Thanks for the video
Hi Bob! That's awesome! Always happy to spark childhood memories! I hope you make them, they are so good!! And I love that your mom has a set!
Gorgeous Mojo Potatoes my Soul Sista, love that crispy crust!!!
Wow what a delicious and mouthwatering recipe. it's really amazing and the way you have explained it's really fabulous. I really enjoyed the beautiful presentation. stay safe and stay connected always dear friend. have a beautiful time and see you around.
I live in Sacramento. I remember Shakey’s! Thanks for the memories.
Hi Dlee645! So happy you remember them! I deal in childhood food memories here! Hope you find more!
It doesn't matter where you record from.
I'm here to learn of, or remembering those YesterRecipes from you Jill.
Yeah, I remember Shakey's growing up.😉
You are the best Bill! Love that you know Shakey's! Always happy to provide the memories!
@@yesterkitchen Thanks Jill!
You do!
I loved Shakey’s!
Hi Buck!!! So did I!!!! Especially the Mojos!!
used to go for the Bunch of Lunch, Yummy
Hi Tim! Totally! I forgot it was called Bunch of Lunch but I remember that! Thank you for reminding me!!
Love Shakey's bunch a lunch. Especially mojo potato's. Definitely will be trying this recipe.
Hi Dawn! Yes! Bunch a lunch!! I hope you make them! Hey will take you right back!
I loved Shakeys. We used to have a few in Boise and the Tri cities. I didn’t realize where the name came from but it makes sense and it was a different time. I do remember the potatoes. So good! Thank you friend for sharing. Always love the memories
Anytime Mike! They will bring you right back!!!
This was such a fun story about the potatoes. I love all of your recipes!
Thank you so much Kristy!!
Looks yummy ,I worked at a Shakey's Pizza late '70s early '80s and we didn't have those in Minnesota.
Hi Kenny! Wow, really? I learn something new every day! That's a bummer.... They are so good!!
Incredible the mojo potatoes that you make! Like a lot how you prepare it! Excellent t work friend! 🦇
Many thanks AC! These are just delicious! Have a wonderful weekend!!
Never heard of Shakey's. But breaded fried potatoes? Yes, yes! They're delicious! All you need is ketchup, and an ice cold beer. Thank you!
Lydia!!! So wonderful to hear from you! I hope you are doing well! And yes, these are fabulous! Everyone will love them! They sure did here!
Hi Jill I love these potatoes! I mean come on chicken breaded potatoes??? 💯 💯 I learned something new about you that you aren’t a ketchup fan. You know what’s funny? The only time I’ve ever been to shakeys pizza was when I was in the Philippines! Filipinos love Shakeys pizza and the ones I was with insisted I get the fried chicken and the mojo potatoes and I loved both of them so much. I didn’t even think I got the pizza 😂😂. I remember liking it so much I looked up the franchise and I was disappointed there was no Shakeys on the east coat! Left you a like my friend . 🧡⭐️🧡⭐️ have a great week! 🍷
Hi ryan! The philippines? No way! I absolutely love that and I especially love that they had the Mojo potatoes! They are spectacular, aren't they! I hope you give them a try and recapture some memories of the philippines, lol! So few are left. But at least you can make these! Have a wonderful weekend my friend!
Very cool I use that same batter mix for deep fried chicken comes out delicious 😋😋😋😋
Hi Frank! I'll bet! Since its so good on chicken, why not potatoes! LOL!
Shakey's in indiana just called them Spuds back in the day. Both of my sisters worked there in high school.
Oh I love that! I didn't know that they were anything other than mojos. Bet they are tons working there!
Wow. Growing up in Downey, CA my brother was obsessed with mojo potatoes! I checked Google maps and Shakeys is still there. I'm sharing this video with my brother. Thanks Jill!
Hi Philip! That's awesome! Now you can make them! Be sure to say hi to your brother for me!!
I heard some Shakey’s dropped Mojos from the menu because of supply.
Well I’ve never heard of Shakey‘s before. Very interesting history. Potatoes looked fabulous! Great job as always.👊🏻🍻😋
It was such a popular chain, but I guess not in every state. The pizza was very so-so but the fried chicken and Mojo potatoes were off the hook! If you try them, you have to let me know!
Hey Jill!! We haven't heard of Shakey's before, but this recipe looks bomb! Very interesting history and ketchup all the way! Easy and delicious! I feel like these would be a hit in our house. Also loved your choice of the spicy Louisiana dip! Cheers to you Jill! Love you! 💕🎉✌️
You will all love them! Cheers to you all! ❤️
omg! what a memory. I loved their chicken and mojos. The pizza was not as memorable. I do remember eating there and watching silent movies ( Keystone cops, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, etc.) What a treat from my childhood. Thank you Jill.
Hi TopGun! Oh wow, I'm truly honored! And I do agree, the pizza was not memorable but their chicken and mojos were! I hope you make them and get some more memories right back! I totally forgot about the movies, but yes, I do remember them!
Hello Jill 👋, Hubby and I just love the mojo’s from Shakey‘s Thanks for sharing this recipe. Will be making these for hubby grand and me. Lol. Hope all is going well. Take care and have a great weekend ! 👍🥰👍❤️💕😋🤤😋🤤😋🤤😋🤤😋🤤😁 Stay cool my friend 😁. Yes Shakey‘s fan here 🙋🏻♀️😊. Yes I love easy !!! I like mine with ranch dressing. My hubby going to love me when I make these ! Lol
Hi Cheryl! I'm so happy you are going to make them! They will bring you right back! Have a great weekend my friend!!
Jill I made the Mojoes and I posted it on Facebook so you could see what I did for the hubby. 😁
Love it Cheryl!!
I remember Shakey's having the Bunch of Lunch. You got all you can eat pizza, chicken and mojo's for one price. And remember getting a pitcher of root beer. They still have one in Valley Village,Ca and one in Northridge, Ca. I've been trying to find a recipe for the chicken but no luck. At least we can make the Mojo's 😉 BTW I have the same bowl! Don't remember where I got it. And didn't know it was vintage.
Hi Don! Oh yes! Bunch of lunch! I loved it! You are in Valley Village? My daughter is there. Next time I visit her I'll have to go to see if it's what I remember since I grew up in Calabasas. The potatoes are on point! If you make them, let me know what you think!
@@yesterkitchen HI, no I live in Santa Clarita now. But I found out that they still do the Bunch a Lunch from 11 to 2 on weekdays 😀 Hope you go check it out. I'm definitely going to try your recipe and will let you know 😉 I'm also going to try the same coating on chicken. Who knows, maybe you found the secret!
@@FrazierMtnCheese yes! Let me know! And sadly, I left California a year and a half ago and now reside in idaho. But I do get to Palm Springs a couple months out of the Year where there is a Shakey's and I will definitely be heading that way the next time!
These are so cool!
The helicopter wanted some mojos!! 🤣
I remember Shakey’s had a lunch special for $3.99. It was a buffet with pizza - cheese or pepperoni, chicken and mojos. Later they added salad. They probably went broke on that because I think it was all you could eat. 🙄
Anyway…
Where can I buy a yesterkitchen cutting board? 🤗
Hi Roberta! Lol! It probably did! I get back to Palm Springs I'm going to see if Shakey's still has the bunch of lunch!
Fabulous? That was actually a gift from one of my boys for christmas. And absolutely in love and maybe one day....... 💗
If you would be so kind to repeat the name of the original breading flour mix that would be great. Thanks for the inspiration to make these. I’ve not had Shakeys in 25 years. BTW great video 👍🏻
Thank you! I use Louisiana brand but really, any chicken fry packaged breading will be perfect
I don't think I have a Shakey's in my area. But these potatoes sound good.
Wow really? I guess they weren't everywhere but they were a huge chain in the day. These are so good! Have a great weekend Demetri!!
Shakey's was one of my favorite spots, but I haven't seen one in decades. I don't even remember fried chicken on the menu. These potatoes look wonderful. ✔👍😜😎
Hi John! Oh yes! Fried Chicken and Mojos were as popular as the pizza! They are soooooo good!!!
Hi my friend
how are you?
I hope you are healthy 😊 thanks for sharing your blog of great content I liked 👉👍 my wishes for success and success stay in touch my friend😊💓
Why are they called mojos
There is no history on that. I wish there was and I would have included it in the video. So all I can offer you is my best guess. The term Mojo is a reference to Magic. And since these potatoes are Beyond delicious I would say that they felt like they are magical and we're given the name. But regardless what the name is, they are magical! I hope you give them a try.
@@yesterkitchen thank you for the information. Shakeys is not in East USA.
I don't like to fry food.
