I did door to door sales for years and I think there are a lot of parallels to it and making friends. It's also similar to a video Asmond did about dating. They need to add A.I. to the npcs so they can actually talk to you..interact with you! Not just send you on fetch quests. Someone tried to mod Skyrim with AI for the NPCs, that would be the best way to immerse your players in your world.
