In World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, the Undead player character is brought back to life with... amnesia.
Amnesia is just an easy way to make players connect with the main character because they are developing and learning information the same way you are while playing the game. Compared to a character who has a backstory and is already very developed you will always feel like you are controlling that character not that you are the character.
That's a really good reason actually
But still
it is the easiest, cheapest and cheesiest way to do it
Like geralt in witcher 1 with amnesia vs geralt in witcher 3 who has remembered all of his very long history.

@@12SickOne34and how else would you achieve that goal while not making the player start with the character from birth fallout 3 style? It's overused, yest but that's because it's the most efficient way to do so
I vividly remember what happened in Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic rolled around at the speed of sound because he had places to go. He had to follow his rainbow. You then meet Shadow, and he uses the Chaos Emeralds to fuck your shit up. You eventually chase down all the emeralds, become a super saiyan, and finally whoop Shadow's ass in a long ass running contest. You collect pokemon on the way too.
Sonic is the only parts people ever talk about
it was pretty dope tbh
That's why SA1 is the superior game. I still don't know what the plot is about. I think Chaos is a bad guy, but also a good guy? And apparently there used to be a lot more Knuckles running around in the past.

I miss those 'chao's' or however you spell it, they were so fun, would leave the game on over night and wake up with a whole new critter! Well, iirc we kicked them to make them evil. Lol.
In elden ring, its the maidens that have amnesia, that's why you're maidenless coz they forgot about you.

36 and I also remember these things. 😂
Not even the people who made ff8 know what the story is
I agree that amnesia is a common trope especially in games, not sure i agree that it is used a lot in isekai though. Generally speaking the entire point on an isekai is that your transported to another or reincarnated into another world with all your memories intact. If anything it is the exact opposite that is the trope in isekais.
yea Isekai doesnt need amnesia because you are foreign
Remembering things of your old world is the whole point of isekai so the character has a completely different point of view and use it, so yes I strongly disagree about amnesia in isekai.
lots of things like isekai come from original book masterpieces like sir arthur conan doyle's lost world john carter etc this setup allows a ton of flexibility too bad its been done too death and needs a break
if amnesia is ever used in isekai, it's usually as a way to time skip from birth to whatever point in time the author wants. Like they get into an accident and hit their head, and all of a sudden all the memories of their past life comes back.

The only times I've heard Tidus' name said in game was in kingdom hearts where it is in fact pronounced "Teedus"
In FFX, Tidus didn't have amnesia, he was kind of tricked by everyone at first into thinking he suffered from Sin induced toxin, which possibly would've given him "fake" memories hence the -
AMNESSSS UHHHHHHHHHHH
Early on in the story he realizes none of his memories were altered. He is from a kind of created dream world that no one else had access to which makes his previous life, and experiences seem extravagant and crazy to everyone else. So, they obviously think he is lying when he tells them about his past. The FFX story is very thoughtful and even though it isn't that deep, the way it is executed and told in the game make it one of the best story games about sacrifice I have ever played.
Also, the fake laugh scene of Tidus and Yuna (in English and Japanese) is executed extremely well and foreshadows the somber journey of the rest of the game. It's a bit sad how people still clown on it and completely miss the emotional message it conveys perfectly. A bit awkward as it is supposed to be, but it's just weird to me how people ever found it funny.
He is literally a summon. The summons in that are physical manifestations of the dreams of the fayth. X-2 deals with the real person he was based on. And that laugh scene is definitely suppose to sound like a fake laugh. He's basically telling her to "fake it 'til you make it" when she doesn't have it in her to laugh anymore because of the weight of her task.
Tidus wasn't even tricked. People didn't believe him, so their expected reason for his "delusions" became a convenient excuse to play off how clueless he was in Spira.
Zanarkand is the ruin city of yore that is sustained by Dream of the Aeons of the Yevon fayth. It existed in the past and is the destination required to create new Aeons out of the guardians protecting the current summoner pilgrimage. But not all Aeons sacrifice is rescinded in kindness. Just look at meister Seymour.
Honestly this explanation is worse than him just having amnesia

In Planescape Torment, it was fantastic. It was used in such an awesome way and it made perfect sense.
The FFX Amnesia is a Stretch tho. Smth similar is used to convey the effect of the player identifying with him being a stranger to Spira, but it's not Amnesia.
He pretended that he was hit with Sins Toxin because he couldn't straight up say that he lived a 1000 years ago.
It's that you think as the player maybe he has amnesia, and he conveniently uses it as an excuse, but it turns out it was his real memories, but he's just not really real, but he is but not really.
@logiclunacy606 only he didn't. There's no time travel. But we're made to think that. It's a good misdirection.
@PopcornMax179 Tidus doesn't find that out until towards the end of the game. He just thinks that he's traveled in time, so he spends a lot of his time not knowing what's going on and using Sins Toxin as an excuse because he isn't accustomed to the culture of Spira. That is still pretending you have amnesia.
It’s more convenient for Tidus to say he has Spira’s version of Amnesia than to tell the truth. It’s also masterfully done because it makes Tidus the watson and we get meaningfully introduced to the lore and mechanics of the world.
If you curate a list of the same tropes, it'll look like every story uses it. However, if you survey 1,000 different stories from different forms of media, then it won't appear that way.
Pretty much, yes.
Wow i didnt think of it like that, i will probably remember it if i didnt have amnesia
Can you explain again? English is not my first language so I'm confuused
Yes, but amnesia is a common video game trope. Final Fantasy was on this list several times.
@Khann_2102 if you show only bad things to people, people will only believe in the bad thing. But if you look at everything around the world, you will find that there is some bad things and some good things. That's what they're trying to say but with the games about "amnesia"
in Dragon Ball Z, Goku was meant to be Brightburn, but he was struck on the head, and, suffered...
ham-kneeesssiaauhh
More like Kamehamnesia.
Amnesia is such a common trope because it allows a self-insert of the player into the shoes of the main character in which you are playing as. It allows the player to immerse themselves into the world more readily as opposed to lets say an already established character with a background you may not necessarily relate with. I agree it's a bit overused but like why fix what's not broken? There's bound to be bad games with this trope just as much as there are good games with this trope.
interestingly, Galuf and Ringabel used the amnesia trope differently
FFV and Bravely Default spoilers:
Galuf is actually a king. not a very interesting reveal, considering that they had already used the "they were royalty all along!" once already. all it really did was let him be replaced with _yet another princess._
Ringabel is from the future of a parallel world that has been lost/destroyed, and the prophetic book that he has been carrying turned out to be actually his diary.
he's not _the self-insert character._ that role is left to a guy, Tiz, who had died once, and "you" inhabit his body giving him a second chance.
I've had this name for 20+ years ever since I played FFX. Reminds people of their Pilgrimage through the game, puts a smile on their face, while also reminding them of the horrific Tidus laugh :D . Don't worry I say Tie-dus too , like the tide on the beach, just made sense that way.
It was supposed to be like the latin word for tides. The guy who they hired to do the voice over for the English ad for the game didn't know how to pronounce latin so he said "Teedus". The rest of the people in the room were Japanese and didn't know how to pronounce it either. By the time they found out it was wrong, it was too late and the ad already aired on TV. Square-Enix wants everything to stay consistent so his name is "Teedus" forever. James Arnold Taylor, the English voice actor for Tidus, has a video on his youtube channel explaining the situation.
@@NuchiAsaki Nomura mentioned the contrast between the lead male and female protagonists established by their names; Tidus' name is based on the Okinawan word for "sun", and Yuna's name means "night" in Okinawan.

FF10 had pretty amazing combat visuals. Seeing a character dodge was amazing compared to getting hit and the word 'dodge' appearing on the screen. Then, it was also one of the first FF games where you had your ENTIRE party for the fight. Could switch and immediately use a character that was in reserve. It felt like everyone was actually there traveling with you instead of that switch party garbage feature previous FF had. I absolutely loved all the innovation FF10 made to the series and then they backpedaled with that awesome feature in future FF. I have no idea why.

I always thought that giving Tidus in FFX amnesia was a good way to have the characters give you exposition while it still fitting within the world. They had so much they wanted to tell you about spira etc, and it puts the player more in the place of tidus as the relationships he forms with the other characters is similar to yours, they tell him about the world, and you learn together. They didn't use amnesia to avoid backstory. They did it so they could directly tell the backstory without it feeling odd.

Type 0 is just pain 😢😢 from start to the end.
The New Vegas example is wrong though. The player character has memories of things before the game and brings that up in a few conversations. One example is the Courier remembers seeing a character before in New Reno and can comment on that.
No, it's right. Just because the writers didn't know what story continuity means, doesn't invalidate the whole main quest/story. Wich is you got shot in the head and can't remember shit, so you gotta remember and get revenge or whatever.
You simply cannot infere so much with bethesda games, they never were well written and never will be. It's not like it's a fromsoft game, where at least you know something is in the game because the devs wanted it to.
@blackjakas3595 There are multiple examples in NV where the Courier refers to events before the game. An entire dlc is dedicated to the aftermath of a job the Courier did before the events of the game.
Besides that if the Courier didn't remember being shot in the head then why would they show us the opening cinematic of the Courier being shot in the head from the Courier's perspective. Also the Courier clearly recognizes Benny's face when you meet him in the Tops.
@@blackjakas3595 New Vegas was made by Obsidian Entertainment, only published by Bethesda
@@Defcon339 Ya i dont remember the Courier having memory loss or anything, but i havent played in ages.
Yeah he doesn’t have amnesia, I just started a new game and the Doc, who saved you asks you “questions” about yourself to build your character stats. The character creator is even in the context of, “did I get that right?”
this kinda reminds me of how DnD usually starts, you know, in a tavern.
Amnesia is a fast way to create a fish out of water in a story. And that allows people to exposit to the main character about things that they should otherwise know from living in that world.
"How could you forget you got shot in the head" easily. There is a police interrigation you can watch on CZcams with a guy who was shot in the head. The cops didn't look him over and thought he was drunk because he could not remember what happened. About an hour in the cops realized the wound and got him to the hospital but the man sadly died.

It's overused because it's a storytelling device? No. It's just a video made as a joke and tropes are tropes, whether they're used well is how you determine if the story is bad, but not because a trope is used.
my favorite final fantasy was 8 the MCs father was a soldier who fell in love with the singer at a bar who she also was in love with the soldier and promised to meet again but during a mission he fell off a cliff and hit his head giving him amnesia, he ends up in a village where he meets a women who nursed him and ends up falling in love with this women who btw is the mother of the mc, the singer was told the soldier died in his mission so she moved on marrying a general who later have daughter that becomes the MCs love interest

The video isn't actually about players actually not remembering stories. Watch the video.
In a small fraction of these games mostly the final fantasy ones use it only becasue the main characters having their memories would give away the main plot if they have them too early on. It is an overused trope to be sure and not just in games but tv and films but if used correctly it makes sense and is a good plot device.
I think my view on this has recently changed. I used to hate how overused the amnesia trope was in media. But over time I noticed that the best and most memorable stories almost always used it in some form or another.
That actually makes sense if you really think about it. People who suffer from amnesia in real life are interesting enough for at least a short story about them only because of how different their day-to-day lives are in comparison to ours.
Movies that try to stay based in reality or are based on a true story are also good solely because of the amnesia tropes, perfect example might be Memento.
I've noticed this for well over 20 years now, likely due to my favorite genre being story based rpgs, primarily jrpgs. I see it more as a positive if it builds a solid foundation for an interesting story, and definitely prefer it over a story that is just there for the sake of it being a story.

BTW, the reason amnesia is such a common trope in roleplaying games is because you are inhabiting a character that has supposedly existed in the fictional world you’re playing in, yet, when you begin the game, you have no knowledge of the characters past. Therefore, you’re going on a journey of discovery along with the character.
Funny thing is i knew the answer after I saw a title right away because right of top of my head i can only remember 1 story that i know from start to finish in every detail and it is because I was so invested in it i feel like i actually lived it...
I can remember the story of many games. Hell I still tell my buddy how to do stuff in certain rpgs he's finally getting a chance to play.
In FF8 over using guardian forces give you AMNESUUUUUUUHHH.
Asmon: That one actually makes sense.
No, no it doesn't. I mean it kinda does but not really.
It was the curse of using their power. It was meaningful considering the power GFs grant. It’s up to the player whether that made a meaningful connection for the characters. I think it did, and it’s also part of the reason Seifer is an asshole.
I blame the "MUH IMMERSION" crowd that demands a complete lack of reminders that you're in a game, even in the tutorial section. The fundamental problem is that your character has always existed in the game world (unless the plot starts with your character being abducted by aliens or something) and should know how things work, but the actual player doesn't know and has to be taught. This is a fundamental problem, and the "immersion at all costs" people won't accept the reasonable ones, like having a guided tutorial that explicitly teaches game mechanics, or having a separate tutorial outside of the main game that you can select from the start menu, so the only way left to reconcile this is to make the PC an amnesiac who has to re-learn everything from scratch just like the player does.
Donkey is the only one who will remember. He is our official scribe. Because he doesn't have..... *(Whispers) amneeeesiaaaa....😂❤
I remember when Dunkey made good videos.
He still does; I get why this video in particular, wasn't everyone's cup of tea, and was a departure from his usual humor, but he deliberately dragged it out just so he could make a point, by not actually making a point. I do kind of miss his analysis videos though; like video game pricing, and voice acting.
He does. It just this one a blunder for everyone. It happens
The dude didn't say "used to"
@@anshuman6923 The video he made that was completely a black screen with him talking was better than this video. The video he made when he didn't say anything and just showed a series of clips was better than this video. 🥲 This is the worst video he's ever made...unless there's a video I haven't seen yet on his channel.
@@anshuman6923 Does he though? He literally just regurgitates the same joke format for different games. As you said yourself, in the past he mixed it up quite a bit with different styles. For me atleast the last 20 videos or so could be the same, its just so stale.
How friggin high was that guy 🤣🤣🤣
Dunkey is on a higher plane of existence. He doesn't need to get high to create stuff like this.
he got high on amnesia haze lmao
What's even funnier is that Amnesia in real life is extremely rare, often unheard of. - It's usually fabricated by the patient or linked to a completely different injury or disease.
I kindly remember all the history from Megaman Legends and Legends 2. Great games, still waiting for that Legends 3!
This video is torture. Give me text to speech from Windows 95 or even AI voice, I hate this so much.
Cry about it
WTF is with the creeper voice in this vid?
so annoying
yes gonna skip this one, trying to hard to be funny
keep sayin' it
If you can read a book you can remember a video games main story line.
"Teedus" wtf lmao
That video was a complete waste of time.
You can't even remember what the video was about
good thing you have amnesia
I have amnesia and forgot all about the thing. Thanks guys.
