Dye Time #205: Over dyeing a Grey T-Shirt, Ice Dyeing A Top, Dye Under Ice, Hand Dyed, Indie Dyer
#indiedyer #indiedyed #indiedyedyarn #handdyed #handdyedyarn #tiedye #tiedyed #overdye #dui #dyeunderice #icedye #fibrereactive #fiberreactive
I'm really enjoying over dyeing items at the moment! I have a grey t-shirt that I hardly ever wear. The labels are long gone, so I don't know the exact fibre content, but it does feel like it contains a high percentage of cotton. So I decided to over dye it. What's the worse that could happen? I ruin a t-shirt that I hardly ever wear? After much contemplating, I decide to go with blues, purple and pinks. I sprinkle 5 dyes on the pre-soaked t-shirt, cover it with ice, then sprinkle a 6th dye on top. What do you think of the results?
Fibre reactive dyes can be used on plant based fibre and animal based fibres. Acid dyes can only be used on animal based fibres.

    Beautiful! I have that color and actually used it to base dye some embroidery threads, then wanted to over dye with browns that break. I have my ‘Lindy’s Stamp Gang’ dry powders, their ‘magicals’ as they are called, because they break so beautifully. They really are not formulated for fibers or cloth, though - more for paper crafting. But I like to bend the rules as much as I can 😉. I can get good breaking on my threads, but they will wash out. For my threads that are only going to be used in pieces that will never be washed, I guess that’s fine, but not ideal. Anyway, will be ordering Dharmas browns this week and see how they do. Thanks for sharing all your creative content with us! Xo

    I love this color combo! And I don't know the science behind it at all, but I know I've stored FR dyes in stock solution for months and still had them work fine, Mr tie-dye has a video on how long you can keep them for, but essentially he says they just start to lose potency over time. However, if you have soda ash in the solution it'll stop reacting after 48 hours, but only on plant fibers, I've used left over FR dye with soda ash in it on wool(with an excessive amount of vinegar because you have to neutralize the soda ash before it'll bind with the protein fiber) and it's worked just fine too. But I know definitely from experience that on plant fibers the reaction will stop after 48 hours once it's mixed with soda ash. On another note, I am so so so curious on how that milk protein fiber is made 🤣 I can't even imagine how they do that

      You are quite welcome, and yes, I really did enjoy this! I have a question though - have you ever tried dyeing threads/flosses with products not meant for dyeing? Like Tim Holtz distress sprays or Lindy’s Stamp Gang sprays or magicals? Initially, they make beautiful colors, the magicals breaking into other colors - it’s breathtaking just doing it. After drying my skeins in the oven (180*F) , gave a rinse and said goodbye to most of the color as it went right down the drain. Some I steamed ironed before the rinse, same result. I just need to figure out how to set the color - any ideas? Thank you for your time and talent, xo 🫶

    • @FromTheCauldron
      @FromTheCauldron Před 4 měsíci

      @@parisnchristlove I’ve had a quick look (I’ve never heard of those sprays) and I’d guess the colour isn’t setting to your floss because they are inks/stains, not dyes. I doubt they have the fibre reactive dye, so the colour won’t stay.

    • @parisnchristlove
      @parisnchristlove Před 4 měsíci

    Thanks for the great video! You did a great job. Lovely yarn. Would you mind sharing where you purchased your fluorescent dye? I’m located in Provence and find it hard to find dye stuff anywhere. Thanks again! many hugs and merry Christmas

      Thank you so much for your comments! I get my dyes from dinashomeofcrafts.com I don’t know if they ship internationally. There is a German company called Webetante.com who ship Dharma dyes within the EU. Good luck!

    I like this idea and will try it, especially for summer. I did a strawberry gin liqueur which has a lot more sugar. Nice topped up with a dry sparkling wine.

      I don’t like to add too much sugar as you can always add more sugar but can’t take it away. I like the idea of strawberries. I might try to make a summer liqueur for myself!

    Great video! I may get brave enough to try dyeing cotton someday. Speaking of dye bleeding, have you ever dyed silk scarves? I tried one the other day and even with acid and heat all the dye washed out! Pretty disappointing.

    • @crystalskyeshanddyed8942
      @crystalskyeshanddyed8942 Před 6 měsíci

      I dye silk scarves and I use Dharma and Jacquard acid dyes and vinegar to dye them. I don't know if fiber reactive dyes would work if you used vinegar with them or not, because I don't use them.

    • @FromTheCauldron
      @FromTheCauldron Před 6 měsíci

      I’ve never dyed silk, so I can’t say why that happened. According to dharmas website, you can use acid dyes and fibre reactive dyes (with citric acid/vinegar etc) to dye silk. Maybe you need to prewash the scarves before dyeing?

    I use way less dye than that, probably a third. 😂 Probably less ice too. I guess it depends how strong you want the really, i like white areas. I use a rack and dye other things "in the muck" run off as well :) so I've got up to 10 items from the waste.

    • @FromTheCauldron
      @FromTheCauldron Před 6 měsíci

      I usually don’t mind white areas, but I wanted solid colour on this one. I’m still trying to figure out how much dye and ice to use. I do love muck dyeing! I’ve never muck dyed quite so many items in one go as you have!
