In this Dye Time, I hand paint and speckle on some gorgeously soft and silky fibre. This fibre is a new to me, unusual fibre; milk protein. Even though this was sold as a vegan fibre, it's not a plant based fibre. So I did a bit of googling and decided to treat this as any other animal based fibre and used acid and heat to set the dye. This was a very interesting experience and the whole way through, I kept saying to myself "I can't believe this is made from milk! How???"
Fibre reactive dyes can be used on plant based fibre and animal based fibres. Acid dyes can only be used on animal based fibres.

I have a monthly yarn subscription that can be purchased through my Patreon: / fromthecauldron Each month you'll receive 100g of yarn in your chosen weight dyed in a mystery colourway and some goodies made by other small businesses. Another perk for Patreons is they get early access to the video where I dye that month's yarn and they get to vote for next month's theme.

That turned out quite pretty. I also have never heard of Milk Protein Fiber.

    I love this color combo!
And I don't know the science behind it at all, but I know I've stored FR dyes in stock solution for months and still had them work fine, Mr tie-dye has a video on how long you can keep them for, but essentially he says they just start to lose potency over time. However, if you have soda ash in the solution it'll stop reacting after 48 hours, but only on plant fibers, I've used left over FR dye with soda ash in it on wool(with an excessive amount of vinegar because you have to neutralize the soda ash before it'll bind with the protein fiber) and it's worked just fine too. But I know definitely from experience that on plant fibers the reaction will stop after 48 hours once it's mixed with soda ash.
On another note, I am so so so curious on how that milk protein fiber is made 🤣 I can't even imagine how they do that

You’re the one that’s got me questioning what I know, or what I think I know! I don’t mix my dyes with soda ash so I think I’ll have a try at saving some muck after my next dyeing session (I’ve gone a bit sock crazy!)

@@FromTheCauldron I wish I understood the science behind it better!
