:) True story
I really love your videos, thanks
Glad you like them!
I still don't really understand it, because the muscles are the same, doesn't matter if arms are bent or straight. So for example in a planche isn't the "straight arm strength" basically just very strong shoulders? Because gravity is trying to push your body down but with straight arms your shoulder muscles (mostly front delt) fight against it. And the elbow has no muscles so I guess it's only important to have strong joints to prevent injury but not in terms of strength. Sorry I come from bodybuilding and this is confusing to me.
yeah its confusing, to help understand from a bodybuilding point of view think Standing Straight Arm Lat Pull Down develops the Lats and biceps even though the elbow does not bend. With calisthenics it works better to just thinks skills and have a good balance of straight arm and bent arm ones especially to start
This is so interesting ! I've never heard anyone talk about that this deep
Great to hear, let me know any video requests
these are great explanations and breakdowns, paul. i'm pushing 70 y/o and still making progress in calisthenics. i have to make adjustments to volume due to age, but really appreciate the tutorials and strategies you show us. for much of this stuff, i'd be clueless on how to proceed, so thanks again.
Great to hear! let me know if you have any questions or video requests
Looks like a good drill if you ready
yes its a fun one. Stretching with the band is good place to start
Great info! Thanks mate
thank you!
I have trained calisthenics for roughly 9 years now and tried many different strategies. The one that worked for me was to split my skill goal into two; an accumulation phase and an intensive phase. The accumulation phase works on low sets and progression stage/weight with high time holds and repetitions. The intensive phase concentrates on high sets, high progression stage/weight with low reps and hold times. When I get to my desired skill progression stage, rinse and repeat. For example, I’m currently working on moving to straddle planche front advanced tuck.
Yes that sounds perfect. It's tricky with all the progressions especially when the jumps or gaps between them seem big....Tuck to Adv Tuck to Straddle teaches you that lesson
Whats Your Thoughts on Reps and Sets for Calisthenics?
Sir while doing handstands I think my body is shifting towards one side like my lower back isbend crunced on one side and because of that my my one feet is higher then the other one any advice
Sets and reps are good, but to accumulate more volume on a specific skill I've learned to do combos with 80% of the combo being the skill and its progressions (because if I can't hold anymore I have to do a regression of the skill to accumulate more) and 20% being a "rest" skill to breathe A good example is 80% planche and 20% L-sit (the whole combo lasting for at least 30s) I've recently taken this new approach with training and its been going great !
i'm learning a lot of calisthenics skills with you. Big thanks man! gratefuly
Great to hear! Thank you
❤
Thanks
I just stayed on the couch 😂
Progression 1 :) Enjoy the journey
I've been working on this stuff daily since Jan 1. I think I've watched your videos more than anyone. I watch them over and over again - every night. Starting to get the occasional 5-10 second handstand now but geez.. underbalance is my nemesis (I have poor shoulder mobility though, that I will continue to work on). I'll never understand how you got so strong to lean like you do and stay balanced. It's amazing to watch. Hopefully I'll get there though. Gave myself a 2 year goal to get a good solid 30 second free standing handstand (straddle press to handstand is my main goal). My pancake has really improved though! Got my whole face on the ground for a full minute now (with a plate on my back and after about 3 warmup sets) and couldn't even get my elbows on the ground when I started at the beginning of this year! I did manage to do my first pike press pushup to handstand (bent arm) against a wall this week. That was exciting! I'm in my 50s though.. so not in any hurry.. just genuinely enjoying the ride of doing things I've dreamed of doing my whole life. Thanks much for your videos, Paul, and keep them up! Of all the videos I watch, I come back to yours the most. I've no doubt you'll be at a million subscribers someday!
Thats amazing progress and shows if you stay consistent results will come. Wise words about not rushing and enjoying the journey! Let me know if you have any requests for videos
Ok so I almost had it but I’m lying flat on my stomach and never got into the forearm stand
Lots of potential, start with Crow or Frog position and practice consistently
Спасибо
i fell on my face
👍👍👍
I really appreciate your work. Thank you soo much
Thank You! Great to hear
My goal is still swim to the edge of a pool, then press handstand out of it. Just seems super cool
Yes that was on my list when I started
Thats mental 🔥
thanks!
The push-up positions are hard to do close to the floor if you have a fat tummy because the tummy is touching the floor lol I think most of these are a little advanced for people just starting ouyt also most people dont have bars to hang from in their homes plus if you are like me over 60+ yrs old and 6'2" it's a little hard not to touch the standard ceiling. that said I will use some of what is mentioned in here as a warm up for Chi Gong but most of the other parts I can't do not because I don't have the strength or flexibility but because on my place I live in is very small just one room and like i said being 6'2" over 240 Lbs it is a little difficult to move around in such a tiny place lol
Yes everyone will need to find their progressions that fit their current level and training space or home. Elevating hands on a table, kitchen top or back of the sofa works well for the Push up movements and replace the hanging with Thoracic foam rolling if you don't have anywhere to hang, the local playground is great for hanging when you can
🙌🏻

Great one Paul. Is the forward fold the more important stretch or is it the pancake? I've been working on the pancake for some time now, hoping it would help the flexibility part of the press all around.
Both are great but yes i would rank them Forward Fold First
Thanks! Brilliant as always 👍
Thanks again!
Your commitment is great as usual 😊 Paul.
Appreciated thank you for the ongoing support

Awesome let me know how you Go
Hi Paul, just starting this journey at 59, am I passed my sell by date or is it worth pursuing. I can just about do the crow stand for 10 seconds.
Thats Great! No way are you passed the sell by date!! Work slowly with the progressions and enjoy the journey. 59 is not old for this style of training
I entered the planch sideways from a squad going to a hand stand and returning to the squat position and straight forward to the Hospital
good tutorials!
Hi Paul, thanks for the video! Would you find a variation with the gradual straightening of the assisting arm a valid in-between progression? I'm working my way up from mantle ring chin-ups to full archers at the moment (so perfect timing of the video), but can only perform up to 3 correct archer repetitions per arm, which declines to 1-2 with following sets and feels like not giving enough stimulus. I'm choosing whether the negatives or the gradual straightening version or even getting back to the mantles with more volume and/or even more accentuated negatives.
Yeah its hard to say, I would normally go with some type of drop set so do 1-2 reps of the harder progression followed by 3-4 slightly easier ones. Aim for 30 seconds total time under tension per set
