HUTA SIALLAGAN: Full guided tour of Lake Toba's restored Batak village.
The Batak Toba tribes of North Sumatra have quite the reputation - in the past as fierce warriors and quite famously, cannibals.
But is this reputation warranted? Did they REALLY consume human flesh, and why? Come along with us to visit one of the most popular restored Batak Villages in Lake Toba and find out a bit more about this unique culture.
At Huta Siallagan (Siallagan village) we admire the incredible architecture of the "Rumah Bolon" (Batak houses), visit a restored King's house, check out the stone chairs used in court cases hundreds of years ago, and look into the method of punishment and execution carried out by ancient Batak tribes.

Been a male motorbike traveller for over ten years, with half of that by myself and half as as a couple. It seemed a strange contrast initially when you would describe a potentially unsafe or concerning experience, then say there were no negative experiences. I think this is an important contrast you raised that typically goes conflated for young adults or new travellers. It is a also a distinction that applies for men too. I too have to practice a heightened awareness at times, say when around dodgy areas, anytime exchanging cash, encountering drugged or fighting people, in a poor area with a lot of technology/wealth visibly on me, when I hitchhiked throughout Australia, or when I lived homeless for 6 months in Sydney - these are all concerning situations, a situation that calls for heightened awareness, in the chance that an unsafe path gets elected by fate - however over time one one develops smarts, develops an intuition, developers the ability to compose and recompose oneself to dissuade threats; such as this video's story of deciding to stay awake with the driver. Oden's Havamal had a lot of this type of wisdom inside it, especially when regarding the vulnerabilities of when a man opens himself up to a women, and was written in such a time where it was a necessity for each adult to develop and maintain enough self-composure to avoid exploitation and enable peace. Modern societies aim to extend protection to even those without the development of such self-composure, to reduce trauma and increase privilege, allowing more underprivileged vulnerable children to mature into productive adults, a noble cause, but can never be absolute; a lot of our protection as adults as things in which society can never protect us before the fact (such as abusive relationships, or a fling that turned into a robbery or disease), such requires a self-composed character; which travel calls upon us to develop. Another way to think about it, is that one wants to develop oneself into someone who reduces exposing their weakness (a vulnerability that one cannot defend) to untrusted parties, and for such weaknesses, one wants to develop oneself to convey a character that even if there is the potential for exploitation that it will not be worth it, and that one will and can overcome it; such a development of character allows for the peaceful interactions discussed in this video, where instead of things going badly, they went great - i.e. the example of hiking within the brotherhood of humanity. I believe that this gift of self-composure (knowing, protecting, proclaiming, enforcing one's personal boundaries against imposition) is portable, and upon returning to Australia (for your friend), it wouldn't be that Australia has changed and become more safe (although it could always be that too), but to some extent, it would also be that they themselves have also changed making their environment/firmament more safe.
Aku pergi ke Sumatra minggu depan! Aku gak sabaaar!
Oh mantap!! Kamu akan menyukainya! Happy travels :D Maybe see you in Toba 😀
Thanks!
Terima kasih banyak Liz and Cookie - you are both so sweet! Hugs from us and our kitties 😻

Hi Liz! We're still here but we no longer have a working editing laptop, so CZcams has to be on hold for a while! 😿 We're also working hard on an upcoming eBook which is taking up all our time! We really hope to be back in action next month because we do miss it. Thanks for checking in with us ☺🙏
@@ExploringSumatra Hi Carly! Omg! Same here w/o working car. Also, recovery from nose basal carcinoma surgery from all the fun & hot sun(uv) years in Indonesia! Put me on the list 4 ebook, great idea! Wish i could teleport laptop. Susah cari orang bis memperbaiki laptop? Tidak bisa beli yg lain? Banyak cinta dari Cookie.
@@ExploringSumatra Check ur thanks! Love from Cookie!
Oh no sorry to hear about your car - and the recover from the surgery. Sending you lots of love and hope you (and the car) are feeling better soon! We can't replace the laptop at the moment, and can't make the trip to the city to try to fix it either - so we just have to wait! We have a friend in NZ who offered us their old one which is awesome, but we have to wait until some tourists from NZ come and can bring for us haha.
Oh Cookie and Liz! This is so unexpected but SO kind of you - especially as you are having health and car issues!! Terima kasih BANYAK. We are going to put this in our laptop fund. Thank you - you've really brightened our day. ❤🙏😀
Please elaborate on travel insurance. You mention safety wing. A lot of bloggers and internet folk get a slice of the travel insurance recommendations they make. A lot of people say they have trouble getting travel insurance to actually cover costs. Have you ever used your recommendation, safety wing, to cover a health insurance claim. If so how did that go?
Hi there! Thanks for the question. We do receive a commission if people sign up with our links, but at the same time, we wouldn't recommend something that we weren't happy with. For example, we used to list World Nomads as a recommendation until we needed to make a claim with them and had a negative experience! We then switched to SafetyWing, but have never needed to make a claim, so can't personally comment on that process; however, we found them the most flexible and affordable by far out of the options we've investigated, and the easiest to sign up with and communicate with. Since we are now based in Sumatra permanently, we both have the local health insurance, so no longer need travel insurance, but if we do an international trip, we'll be using them again. Always open to hear recommendations from other trips or feedback on their own insurance experiences. :)

Thank you very much for a video! Do you have any recommendations regarding a stay on Lake Toba if I can't drive a scooter? I would love to stay around the lake in July, but I don't want to feel too isolated if nothing can be reached by foot or some sort of public transport.
Hi! Definitely base yourself in Tuktuk. It's a beautiful little village where you can walk to restaurants and shops - and even after 2 years living here we still don't get bored of wandering around! From Tuktuk, it's also a reasonable walk or bicycle ride to Tomok or Ambarita, where there are markets and cultural attractions to visit. If you wanted to go further afield, there are some excellent guides that can take you on day-trips - either on their scooter or by car :)
I agree with you Carly! There is a very strong energy here in Lake Toba, and I may say is a healing and pure one coming from the new earth of the super volcano. It is a blessing to be here, a place that changed the course of #humanity 🫶🏻
Isn't it amazing! So many people feel that energy - so glad you guys discovered it too ☺🙏

Hi Carly & Agung! Wonderful video Si gale gale & Batak architecture. It is believed the Tana Toraja are descended from Samosir island, very similar wooden carvings & architecture. Cookie sends 🐾💙🐾💗
Hi Liz and Cookie! So interesting isn't it! I'd love to go back and study all this stuff to learn about it - Wikipedia will have to do for now haha.
Loved this. Thanks guys ☺️

Great video! I also noticed the similarity to Māori art on the houses. Sumatra is one of my favourite destinations! I hope to visit Indonesia again next year. Keep the videos rolling. 🎥
Thank you! Agung speaks Karonese and many of the number words are the same as the Maori numbers. Would love to know more about the similarities. Hope you can make it back to Indo next year! Thanks for the support. ☺🙏
Amazing !! Super interesting beautiful art work and Batak culture!
Thank you Pablo! 😀🙏
We have LOADS of great places for you to visit when you come to Toba - check them out here 😀 czcams.com/video/qbvwXZ6R58E/video.htmlsi=Z_k2NptywoRXZGJ9
Amazing thank you for the tour! There are similarities to Māori the pole looked like the American Indian totem poles and I believe that they are associated with an Animal spirit as well hence the snake at the back. Love seeing the traditional housing❤
Thanks so much for watching! There are so many similarities to Maori - especially as you dive deeper into the various tribes of Sumatra. Apparently there are similarities to the indigenous tribes of Australia, too. So fascinating. ☺
Intresting
Thank your for the information- I am a solo traveler and will definitely write for guide recommendations 😊
Awesome - so glad you found the video! Happy to help out with recommendations :)
