  • Welcome to the vibrant Batak Toba festival of Gondang Naposo in North Sumatra!
We were so lucky to attend this three-day Batak pesta (party) in our local village of Tuktuk on Samosir Island. Come with us to watch the gorgeous tortor dancing and learn a little more about Batak culture - unique to this part of North Sumatra, Indonesia.
This unique Indonesian cultural event happens once every five years in various villages in the Lake Toba area and lasts for several days.
Traditionally, Gondang Naposo is an opportunity for younger unmarried members of the Bataknese community (typically 25 years old and over) to connect with their peers and potentially find a spouse.
While it still can serve that purpose today, Gondang Naposo is also about preserving unique Indonesian traditions for the next generation and promoting Batak culture to tourists.

What a great dating app !!! So much more fun than online. Very colourful. Love the music and the dancing and the smiles - a fun occasion - would be interesting to know if some participants found the love of their life.🥰

Thank you - hope we were able to portray just what a fun, social event this is. People were out dancing until 2am for 3 nights in a row! So happy and relaxed and full of joy. We'll keep an ear out to see if anyone found their soulmate this year haha. ❤

Wow! What a cool, fun, cultural event. I wonder how many do find a spouse there. Do you know any couples that met like this?

We'd be so curious to know that too - how many of the people here met their spouses through Gondang Naposo! I'll have to ask every couple we meet now how they found each other haha.

Hello Liz! Thank you for asking - there has been alot of major activity down at Mount Marapi in West Sumatra, but that's a long way from us. From the news, it sounds like nobody has injured since the tragedy of the initial eruption, and people are being evacuated and kept safe. 🙏

Selemat Sore, Carly & Agung. The Batak culture is very unique and appealing. Finding marriage partners at a dance is more appealing and entertaining than online dating. Is there a social stigma if you're single? Beautiful landscape with no rain. Cookie sends love.

Selamat siang Liz and Cookie. The Batak culture is sooo fascinating - full of life and colour. And yes, the idea of meeting someone at a fun dance is much more appealing than online dating. The social stigma isn't as intense as it once was, but it is still against the norm if you hit 25-ish and aren't married yet.
