- Come grocery shopping with us - Indonesian style - at our favourite street market.
Forget air-conditioned supermarkets with elevator music and carefully curated shelves - shopping at a street market in Indonesia is waaaaaaay more fun!
Displays overflowing with colourful, exotic fruit, vendors selling delicious street food like bakso and martabak, crowds of smiling locals navigating the crowded alleyways, and of course, always music and laughter in the air.
In this video, we visit the Saturday open-air market in the village of Tomok (Samosir Island, Lake Toba) to stock up on our favourite fruits and vegetables.
It's always so interesting to chat with the locals, marvel over the super-sized fruit (in comparison to NZ produce!) and browse the used clothing stalls.

Hi, I'm Agung, I live in Lake Toba, Sumatra (Indonesia) with my wife Carly. I was born in Sumatra, so love sharing all my local knowledge with visitors. Carly has been a traveller to Sumatra since 2009, and has been living here the last few years. We now live in Tuktuk village on Samosir Island in Lake Toba, North Sumatra. Together, we create content to help share the beauty of incredible Sumatra with the world.
Horas, Mejuah juah - see you in Sumatra!

Favourite fruit in Indonesia? Agung's is rambutan and Carly's is dragon fruit! What's your top pick?

Omg take me to that market! I want the giant pineapple 😂
Your wish is our command - come on overrrrr bro! ☺
Hi guys! Good choices at the market. That one fruit we call jambu air (water apple), on Lombok. Rambutan is my favourite fruit but not the season here yet. And I do like bubur. Carly, when you go to the markets do the locals up the prices because you are a foreigner? Happens to me so much so I rarely go. Sadri does the shopping. I like seeing the comparisons in prices from one island to another. Good price for the beautiful sarung though. Love from Lombok 🥰
Hey guys! Ahhh yes - jambu air - Agung says it's the same name here. Not something I've tried yet. And yes, it's the same for us. Usually, Agung will do all the shopping alone so we avoid "bule tax." It's quite frustrating as I enjoy going to the markets and doing shopping now and then, but really have to stay at home to get the best prices, even in our local village where everyone knows us. The ladies who we took photos with and sent them to on WhatsApp then tried to rent us a motorbike and accommodation in Samosir, even though we told them we've lived here for a while now and have a motorbike haha. Apparently, the prices of produce etc are a little higher here on Samosir than they are in other areas. Perhaps because things have to travel by boat? Still, small price to pay to live somewhere so beautiful. ☺❤
Bule tax, haha right. I often forget to take my Buku Nikah with me to a wisata, waterfalls, etc. and they always want to charge me something extravagant. They don't believe Sadri is my husband, they think he is my tour guide. I also forgot to comment that Agung saying that oil being sold open like that on the road was dirty. That made me laugh out loud. So true. 😆
Watching your videos I think I'll go to Sumatra 😊 Greetings from Guatemala
