- In this video, we leave Sumatra, Indonesia for the first time in TWO YEARS to visit the beautiful city of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
While we WISH this was just a fun holiday, we actually had a good reason for travelling to Kuala Lumpur: to take advantage of Malaysia's fantastic healthcare facilities for a long-overdue health screening.
We lead a simple, low-budget life in Indonesia, so the decision to spend a large chunk of our savings on medical tourism in Kuala Lumpur was a tough one, but we are SO glad we decided to do it!
Come with us as we visit renowned Gleneagles Hospital, Kuala Lumpur for a full health screening. We check out Kualanamu Airport in Medan, navigate arriving in Kuala Lumpur, and experience the process of healthcare in KL, Malaysia.
We came away SUPER impressed with the thoroughness, efficiency, and above all, kindness of the team at Gleneagles Hospital.
If you're interested in Health Screening in Malaysia, we have a dedicated, in-depth video about the whole process coming soon - make sure you subscribe so you don't miss the notification!

Did you know that Kuala Lumpur is just an hour's flight from Medan in North Sumatra! Tickets are only about 500,000 IDR (around $50AUD) each way, so it's really simple to pop across from Malaysia to explore Sumatra. 😀
People from Negeri Sembilan like to visit Bukit Tinggi in Sumatera because of their cultural similarities.
Yes we know it's quite close because we could feel every 7 mag earthquakes in Sumatera 😔
@@daengzool6023ohhh this is super interesting, thanks for sharing that info! We’ll have to go and find out more. We know a fair bit about Sumatran cultures but virtually nothing about Malaysian cultures - it makes sense that there would be a lot of common ground! Terima kasih 🙏😊
@@nutzhazelohhh gosh. In that case it’s not so nice to be close! Fingers crossed no more big ones for a looooong time 😅🤞🏼
That's good to know. Maybe next time I return from Canada I will fly to Malaysia first, visit Sadri's cousin and then fly over to Sumatra for a visit. That's a cheap flight. 👍
I Agree KL so great city
Thank you looking forward to the next video. Glad everything came back good.
Thank you! Yes, a big relief to get all the results back! And we enjoyed a little break from Sumatra too haha.
Selemat Sore, Carly, just saw "Summer Suites in KL Jalan Mercu Summer Suites, 8, Jalan Cendana, WP near Petroncas Towers from Ben Fisherman(US tattoo artist)@15.00 US nightly, full on kitchen, washer/dryer/ac. Gleneagles looks amazing, wish we had one-stop medical in US. Hassle central!
Congrats on clean bill o' health (and a well deserved bounty of new subs:) LOVE KL and Lake Toba, can't wait to return to both! Cheers, STL
Thank you on both counts! Our little taste of kl made us really curious to explore more! Aside from the long drive from Toba, it’s such a short and affordable flight - so can’t wait to visit again! 😊
Glad all is OK! And that you had a lovely stay in KL, swish appartement!
I had the pleasure of staying 4 nights in TukTuk last week, had a fantastic time !
Thank you! It was such a fancy apartment! Really great value. Ahhhh so great to hear you got to visit our pretty little village (and before the crowds of Idul Fitri descended!) So glad you liked it. ☺
Glad to hear you got a clean bill of health 👍 that's great news!
There is no price for peace of mind 🥰
Thank you! Totally agree - all those niggling doubts got clear answers so we can focus on the things we need to focus on and stop stressing haha. ☺
Welcome to Malaysia From Ipoh Perak Malaysia
Thank you! We really loved Malaysia even for the short time we were there - can't wait to come back and see more of it. 😀
So happy to hear you went and had a complete check-up and nothing serious to worry about or have to deal with. I can totally understand why you had to go out of Indonesia to get thorough testing and a qualified opinion. Luckily it was not far to travel there. And that pool with the view and having it all to yourselves - amazing! Hope you are feeling better Carly and some relief in knowing. Hugs from Lombok🤗🤗
Thank you - it was really good to get everything checked in one go and be able to trust the results! I also got routine things like mammograms and PAP, which were overdue, so really happy we made the trip. It's crazy that the flight is only an hour but it takes us a full day of travel to get to the airport haha. Hope Sadri is feeling loads better! xx
@@ExploringSumatra Is there a hospital in Lake Toba or you would have to travel elsewhere if there was an emergency? We have a Puskesmas very close to our village. I wonder if there are any mammogram machines in Indonesia. Maybe Jakarta. Nothing on Lombok and a friend of mine checked in Bali for me - nothing. Which is surprising because Bali has a large population of expats. Sadri had a 2-day fever and a setback with his wounds but feeling better again for 2 days now. Hopefully feeling back to normal soon. Thanks for asking! Take care guys!
We have puskesmas jusr down the road in our village, but it’s famously - how do i put it - a last resort kind of place haha. There is a hospital on Samosir Island about an hour away, but if we needed to go to hospital, we would probably rather make the two hour trip to the nearest bigger hospital - or the four hour trip to Medan.
That’s crazy there are no mammogram services in Bali!! Gosh I’ll have to check the situation in Medan for that in future. Glad Sadri is feeling better too. 😊
Selemat Sore, C & A. Cool news(NYtimes) in Sumatra about orangutan, Rakus who spends his days in a protected area of rainforest called the Suaq Balimbing research area, in Indonesia’s Gunung Leuser National Park. He clean his wounds from the leaves of the liana vine.
You can swim from Medan to Kuala Lumpur! 😅
Oh gosh - we would be at the bottom of the sea in the first 10 minutes haha 🤣
SELAMAT DATANG KE MALAYSIA
Terima kasih 😊
🎉
😀
Good view❤
Such a good view! Especially from the pool haha.🤗
Selamat hari raya idul Fitri kawan, sukses selalu dan kami tetap mendukung kalian🎉🙏🙏
Bujur 🙏🙏🙏😊😊😊
KL🥰
Let's go back and actually EXPLORE!
❤❤❤
☺☺☺
Selemat Sore, Carly. Tolong saya. Tanya Agung tau kamu. How do I say in Indonesian? Please take a photo of the cloth full-length/lengthwise & measurement? Tnx
Welcome to KL, Malaysia.
Thank you 😊
@@ExploringSumatra 😀
I would still be standing on the side of the road waiting for traffic to stop !!! Do they have pedestrian crossings or do you have to play dodgems ?? Busy bustling city - very different from Toba. Maybe you will go back some time and play tourist xxxxxx🌻
We were looking for traffic lights and crossings but couldn't see any anywhere haha. Confused as in Sumatra it's put your hand out and force them to stop. In Singapore, you'll get arrested for that. We must have looked rather silly standing on the side of the road looking confused. We loved it - hopefully can pop back over one day just for fun!
@@ExploringSumatraYes we use our hands too in Malaysia to cross roads, even drivers would use hands to give way to other vehicles in junctions 😂
@@nutzhazel ahhhh this is so good to know for next time haha. It all seemed so much more organized and well behaved than in Sumatra so we felt a bit confused 🙈😅
@@ExploringSumatra Haha yeah, for most parts. I've been to Bukit Tinggi and Padang before, but I was really impressed with how the traffic works there, like it's an organized chaos. It was hectic and looked dangerous but there was no accident at all 😂
@@nutzhazel Haha we totally get that! The driving does look like chaos over here but it seems to work somehow! 😁
Please elaborate on travel insurance. You mention safety wing. A lot of bloggers and internet folk get a slice of the travel insurance recommendations they make. A lot of people say they have trouble getting travel insurance to actually cover costs. Have you ever used your recommendation, safety wing, to cover a health insurance claim. If so how did that go?
Hi there! Thanks for the question. We do receive a commission if people sign up with our links, but at the same time, we wouldn't recommend something that we weren't happy with. For example, we used to list World Nomads as a recommendation until we needed to make a claim with them and had a negative experience!
We then switched to SafetyWing, but have never needed to make a claim, so can't personally comment on that process; however, we found them the most flexible and affordable by far out of the options we've investigated, and the easiest to sign up with and communicate with.
Since we are now based in Sumatra permanently, we both have the local health insurance, so no longer need travel insurance, but if we do an international trip, we'll be using them again.
Always open to hear recommendations from other trips or feedback on their own insurance experiences. :)
@@ExploringSumatra Ok. I really appreciate your honesty.
Is it always that hard to cross road in KL. ? I’d be afraid that they would hit me. !!
I don't think so - from what I recall in the central city on a previous trip there were nice, orderly places to cross. We were just in an unfortunate spot with no crossings nearby. 😂
Selemat Sore Carly & Agung! Senang sekali medical treatment in Malaysia! Murah sekali! Once was treated 4
typhoid fever @Singapore General(fresh food(no pkg food like in US hospitals) movie theater, & more! Bali will have new hospital in partnership with Mayo Clinic. Hard 2 believe Jakarta doesn't have medical check-up services(Kizuna). Did they screen 4 digestive disorders, pelvic dysfunction, allergies? Predict certain diseases? Mental health? Did they tell u anything u didn't know?Suddenly went thru cellulitis on leg & was happy 2c dr but side effects threw me 4 a loop! Stay beautiful & healthy! Cookie sends love.
Selemat pagi Liz! We had a friend receive treatment for dengue in Singapore last year and they also said it was amazing - like being in a 5 star hotel! Jakarta may well have similar packages (we're not sure), but Kuala Lumpur is closer and cheaper to travel to - just a 45-60 minute flight). Indonesians that have the means to do so usually also travel to Malaysia for healthcare rather than gamble on the local services. We've just had (and witnessed) too many negative experiences in Sumatra to risk it.
The specific things you mention aren't included in the health screening packages, but you could certainly request them as add-ons.
They did tell us several things we weren't aware of that are important to know, so grateful for that! Hope you're feeling much better - side effects can be nasty! Hugs to you and Cookie. xx
@@ExploringSumatra Malaysia is rated as a top medical destination in Asia, esp among English speakers. Glad you both went & got a health checkup. Insect bites always concerned me while traveling in Indonesia, as i couldn't stop itching until i got to an ac room. Cat cuddling now 4 health. Cookie sends love. Take care.
