- Life in Sumatra Indonesia may not always be easy - but honestly, more often than not, it really IS. And FUN too!
We get so much enjoyment out of life's simple pleasures together - strolling around the village market picking out fresh fruit, taking the scenic route home to check out the rice fields, marvelling at all the small things that make Samosir Island such a special place to live...
And of course - endless entertainment from our four fur-kids.
It's been a while since we had a chill hang-out day and catch-up with you guys. We wish you could jump on a scooter and come with us - but until then, this is the next best thing.

Hi Carly and Agung, you do a great job of providing useful travel informations about Sumatra and this can only help people who are discovering this magnificent island for the first time. I wish I had all this during my first trip there, 35 years ago. I came to Tuktuk for 2-3 days in 2023 and I would have liked to thank you personally for all that work but we didn't cross on the road. It will perhaps be for 2027 ;) Keep it up, it's always a pleasure to watch your videos!

Hi Cookie and Liz! Leaving Indonesia is not an option, but that's ok! We could afford land in a different area, but we just love Lake Toba so much we can't tear ourselves away for now. Happy to keep renting our place until we figure something else out. ☺

About foreigner prices, i think if they know you guys, they should give you normal, local price, so I am surprised they still want to charge you more.
Even in Bali (I am still here), I go to the local market with my wife every week and we always pay local price, i also go to the fruit shops and i pay normal, even i go there alone.
But we live outside of tourist area and we go to these places for long time, so that might be the case.
I guess market is near Tuk Tuk so "harga bule" is common there, if you stay further in the village, you probably would pay just as locals do.
Anyway, always good to watch you guys and spend some time with you. Enjoy your day!
Totally agree! When we lived in a very small village, bule prices were never an issue as I was the sole bule living there and everyone was my friend/family! Where we are now in our immediate village and favoured shops, I can shop solo and get local prices. But there are still shops/places that will see $$ signs from foreigners regardless. And the markets we go to less frequently as well. ☺

Hi guys! I really could have used some traditional Karonese medicine for my itchy rash the past 3 weeks. That broccoli was super expensive and that's why I stay away from the markets too. Really nice dresses in the 2nd hand shop. Lombok does not have great style for clothes because of the large Muslim population. Long sleeves are too hot for me here. The land you love and dream of owning is beautiful. Keep visioning it. We are blessed to see the majestic Mt. Rinjani from our porch and rice fields down below. Where you live now is absolutely stunning though... so until you have the money to buy your own land, you are fortunate to be where you are and to be able to sit on your porch and look out over that incredible lake. Thanks for the tour around, really enjoyed it. 💚
Ahh yes - if that oil can heal broken bones, it might do wonders for your mysterious rash! I hope that it's all cleared up now. I really enjoy going to the markets generally, but yes it's so frustrating to not be able to get reliable prices for things. We actually usually stick to our local shop that sells some fruit and veg, as they know us and are honest, but it's nice sometimes to go to the market! I had the same issue with clothing when living outside of Lake Toba - so hard to find comfortable things to wear! We are so lucky with the secondhand shops here. Wow - must be amazing with the view of Rinjani. We lived for a while in Amed a few years ago and loved waking up to see Mount Agung.
We are SO lucky to be able to rent where we are - there are almost no places available here to rent, especially with views like ours, so we are in no hurry to move, although would like to feel settled about our future! The right place will come. Thanks for watching guys - hope you're both well.
@@ExploringSumatra yes, thank you... no more itchiness, just some markings still on my legs that I hope will disappear and not be permanent. ??? Didn't know you had lived on Bali. Karangasem - black sand beaches. Bali is so busy though. Lake Toba looks like paradise to me. 💖
Yay for no more itchiness! Yes, about 6 years ago we ran out of money and I had some health issues that needed dealing to outside of Sumatra. We tried Bali and didn't like the main areas, so wound up in Amed for 6 months before moving to Gili T of all places for a year! We actually loved it - stayed away from the bars and noise, helped my friend with her cat rescue, and Agung worked in a restaurant. Was a nice time but we realllly prefer Lake Toba. 😀
