  • Sumatra doesn't play it small: it's a big island with big animals and even BIGGER plants. And we found the biggest of them all when jungle trekking in Sumatra, Indonesia recently.
This month, we were lucky enough to be in the beautiful jungle village of Batu Katak in North Sumatra at the right time to discover the biggest flower in the world, the incredible Titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum).
Batu Katak village is not far from the famous Bukit Lawang jungle trekking location, but it's much smaller and relatively unknown in comparison.
This gorgeous riverside village is bordered on one side by the Gunung Leuser National Park. On the other side of the river lies a sprawling karst forest teeming with incredible flora and fauna - such as the Amorphophallus titanum!
This enormous jungle flower is native to Sumatra and can only be found in specific areas in North and West Sumatra. Locally, it's known as the "bunga bangkai," or corpse flower (a name it shares with the equally impressive Rafflesia flower, also found in the rainforests of Sumatra).
Unfortunately, Carly was unwell the day that the world's largest flower was in full bloom (Titan arum only bloom for 24-48 hours, so timing is everything!) So Agung headed off into the jungle with our good friend and experienced guide Ucok.
Amorphophallus titanum flowers are truly unique and utterly FASCINATING!
