BATU KATAK - The Best-Kept Jungle Trekking Secret in SUMATRA

- Batu Katak is an off the beaten path jungle village with a difference! Located in North Sumatra, this jungle paradise is just 30 minutes from the more well-known (and much busier) village of Bukit Lawang.
While they are so close, they are worlds apart. Batu Katak is a small, local village with just a few guesthouses perched alongside the river, overlooking the rainforest.
No souvenir shops, no bars, no crowds, just pristine rivers, waterfalls, and incredible jungle to explore.
In Batu Katak, you'll wake up to the sound of gibbons calling in the nearby trees. You can trek in search of orangutans, leaf monkeys, hornbills and more. What's more, you can find the incredible corpse flowers here if you get the timing right (amorphophallus titanum and rafflesia).

Just discovered your channel - great videos. I was planning on visiting Sumatra this August but I see comments saying that it is burning season. I experienced it in Chiang Mai and it is horrible. How bad is it in Sumatra? Maybe you could make a video on it?
Hey! There is reportedly a burning season, but it's nothing like the one in Thailand. Here in North Sumatra, it's not at all noticeable in our experience, and even friends down in West Sumatra say they've never had any issues for the decade they've been living there. We've seen news reports from South Sumatra (where the burning is usually the most intense) that locals have had to wear masks and have increased breathing issues, but it really does seem to be limited to a small part of Sumatra. Also, if there is burning, it tends to be in the middle of dry season - August is getting into wet season :)
