    Excellent, informative, and enjoyable video friends! So fortunate you found your backpack with all your belongings still in it Carly. Totally avoided a big hassle with that one. Do you get local prices because you are married to Agung? I always have to carry around my Buku Nikah to prove we are married. Otherwise, they assume he is my guide. 😆

      Thank you guys! The reason it took us a few days to retrieve my stuff was that I panicked as thought it had been stolen by humans. Went straight back to my room and laptop to cancel the cards and then to town to report to police for insurance. But Agung had a feeling so eventually went back and found it all haha. Definitely I still get charged bule prices. I can’t shop alone, and often I have to hide around the corner if I’m with Agung so that he gets local prices haha.

    I really enjoy your channel, you do a great job with it. I'm curious how much that piece of property that you were looking at would cost? It would be interesting to see a video on the price to purchase property in different places in Sumatra.

    • @ExploringSumatra
      @ExploringSumatra  Před 4 měsíci

      Hey Eric - so glad you're enjoying our videos! ☺ Thanks for watching. So prices here in the Lake Toba area are sky high compared to the rest of North Sumatra, particularly those in the Tuktuk area. The land we were looking at was 1.2 million IDR per metre, and I believe it was around 50 by 20 metres? In other areas, it can be half that or even less. We've seen some really affordable and beautiful land in less developed areas that is around 100 million IDR for 4 rantai (that is a land measurement here that is 20 square metres for 1 rantai). Sorry can't be more specific, the math and the measurements get me all confused! Basically, if we are willing to get off the beaten path and into some really local areas, I believe we could buy a decent chunk of land and build a nice house for around 500 million IDR (which is about $50,000 AUD). But here in our area, you'd be looking at 4 or 5x time that price minimum.

    • @ericdavidson8141
      @ericdavidson8141 Před 4 měsíci

      Wow, thanks for taking the time to respond so thoroughly! That's incredible that you could get a house on land for that amount anywhere at all. Certainly here in the US where I live there is nothing close to that. I look forward to visiting in the next couple of years. @@ExploringSumatra

    • @ExploringSumatra
      @ExploringSumatra  Před 4 měsíci

      It is incredible. It's the same way back in NZ - there's no way we will ever be able to buy land OR a house back for less. We're lucky that we at least have the knowledge we'll be able to afford somewhere (but likely away from Lake Toba) when we decide to settle. Hope you can make it for a visit soon. ☺

    Hello Agung and Carly, loving your videos. Great information thank you so much 🙏 I’m planning on coming to Sumatra in June for around a month, travelling alone.
    I am hoping to be in internet service for the majority of the time as I have duties I need to fulfil each day. lol, random question… where are the best places to visit that still have good internet reception. I’m keen to see as much as I can and do a few activities while I’m in Sumatra but mostly just want to chill and eat on a minimal budget as I’m hoping to travel throughout South East Asia for 4 to 6 months. I fly into Singapore and was planning to either catch the ferry from Singapore or to go into Malaysia and catch the ferry from Melaka to Dumai.
    I’m not in a rush in the time I’ll be in Sumatra but being contactable is essential. I hope to hear back from you and maybe meet you both.

      Hi! Ahh so glad you're enjoying our vidoes - thanks so much for your comment. And how exciting that you're heading to Sumatra soon! It can be a tricky place to travel, but great approach to just take it slow and enjoy. Some areas of Sumatra can be a bit tricky with the internet signal. But overall, it's pretty decent! You'd probably need to stick to more on the beaten path places, because once you get a bit more remote, the signal tends to be less reliable.
      For North Sumatra, Tuktuk in Lake Toba is a good base (where we are). Most places have decent WiFi, and if you have data on your phone it's generally strong and does the job.
      Places like Berastagi and Bukit Lawang also have WiFi and signal, although I do hear it can be a bit touch and go at times in Bukit Lawang. Especially with powercuts quite a regular thing, as once the power goes, it's not just the WiFi that cuts out, but usually cellphone data too. Pulau Weh up off the coast of Aceh) has good WiFi and signal too and is a nice place to chill. I'm not too sure about other areas of Sumatra, but I think it would be safe to say that the bigger towns and more "touristy" areas will be the same throughout the island. :)

    Hello guys,
    Another great video !
    Some questions:
    1) Are there nice beaches and/or islands near Medan ?
    2) How much cost a Taxi from Medan to Parapat ?
    3) Which area do you recommend to stay in order to visit Lake Toba: Parapat or Samosir Island ?
    The last but not the least.. how much cost a beer in Medan and/or Lake Toba ?
    Thank you in advance for your help.
    Take care !

    • @ExploringSumatra
      @ExploringSumatra  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hey Antonio! Thanks for watching, we really appreciate it!
      1. Unfortunately none nearby. Most people head to Pulau Weh (in Aceh, so a flight or overnight bus) or the Banyak Islands (but they are a 7-8 hour drive. There is Nias Island off the West Coast, but it's more a surfing destination, and also quite a long drive to the port at Sibolga!
      2. From Medan to Parapat: Bus 60,000, Private Car around 800-900,000. Taxi or Grab you can probably get a little cheaper maybe 400-500,000 but you'd need to just try your luck with the app and see if anyone would be willing to take you.
      3. Definitely recommend basing yourself in Tuktuk on Samosir Island (this is where we live). It's a really pretty village with plenty of guesthouses and restaurants. Hire a scooter and explore around the island. You'll need to get to Parapat (Tiga Raja Port) then jump on one of the colourful ferries and head to Tuktuk. The ferry is 25,000 per person and takes around 1 hour.
      4. If you're buying a beer in a local shop, you'll be able to get a small for around 30,000 and a large for 40-45,000. But in most bars and restaurants, it's about 35,000-40,000 for a small and 50-60,000 for a large. That's for the local Bintang beer. Foreign beers cost a little more.
      Hope that helps! 😀

    Which booking platforms or apps do you recommend for searching accomodation with reliable reviews?

    • @ExploringSumatra
      @ExploringSumatra  Před 4 měsíci +1

      We use agoda and booking.com locally. The best way to make sure the reviews are legit is to filter them by most recent, and look for reviews from people from other countries that are actually descriptive. The fake reviews are often from locals and usually just give a high ranking with no explanation.

    • @ExploringSumatra
      @ExploringSumatra  Před 3 měsíci

      Hey! Thanks for your comment - and exciting to hear you're thinking about a trip to Sumatra! Through most of Sumatra, November is the beginning of wet season - but that doesn't tend to mean the same things as for other parts of SEA. There isn't a really heavy monsoon season. Yes, more chance of rain, but in most places, the rains tend to come in the late afternoon or overnight, and not necessarily every day. It's still a great time to come and explore!
