What's happening at the allotment this July?
zhlédnutí 818Před 11 měsíci
Mid July and there's lots going on. The first flush of harvesting seems to be over ( onions, garlic, broadbeans, peas) and it's a waiting game whilst the french beans mature. The potatoes are coming along nicely and I'm trying my best to get two consecutive crops into some of the borders. onions followed by beetroot; garlic followed by tomatoes ; Asturian tree cabbage followed by french beans, ...
All the hard work is starting to pay off as the harvesting starts. So satisfying!

The spinach is bolting; rocket is getting planted; comfrey is being chopped down for mulch; beetroot is getting planted and the first courgettes are picked! Today's haul includes, onions, beetroot, mange tout , redcurrants, broad beans, courgettes and flower petals for herbal teas.

Hi Fiona. What a shame that you have had a poor year for some things. Bad luck getting blight but, as you say, almost inevitable with the weather. My tomatoes have been poor and my strawberries gave practically nothing - they are new plants though so hoping it was just that. My potatoes have been ok so far with more to harvest and my squash look likely to be a big success - I put that down to beginners luck since it's my first year growing them. I think you have had more rain and mugginess than I have had. The great thing about gardening is, there's always another year. Here's hoping we all get better growing weather next year. Take care. Mags

Yes, it’s been a difficult year but not a total loss. I’m glad you’re having success with your potatoes and squash. It’s my squash fail I’m most disappointed with (although I’m sure Kenny is secretly pleased as he’s not a fan😂). My tomatoes are still very green and I should really go and strip the plants of leaves to force them to ripen. I usually stop watering them to hasten ripening but that hasn’t been an option this year as they’re outside and it’s rained so much (rivers running down the street again yesterday with a huge cloud burst). Never mind, as you say, there’s next year!

I agree it’s been a difficult year to grow food my French beans have done amazingly I have two huge bags in the freezer and we’ve eaten loads. I must say I’ve grown the beans in the same bed for five years and so far no issues, I just add homemade compost and chicken manure pellets every year before planting. I think the grey skies all through July have had a major impact on some crops like squashes , just not bright enough, but courgettes amazing. I sow my Brussels sprouts in June they are just forming sprouts and I did the same last year and had amazing

Yes, it’s definitely been a tricky year although, as you say, some crops have done well in the damp , cool conditions. I’m just wishing I had room for a poly tunnel to grow a lot more heat loving plants. Glad you’re having a big crop of beans. I’ve tried canning/jarring some of my beans this year to save on freezer space. We haven’t tried them yet so I’m hoping we like like them. It’s a great way to store the veg without having a packed freezer. Thanks for watching! 😊

Hi Lorraine. How kind of you! We’re fine, just having a case of burnout! The weather has made gardening a struggle this year and I’ve been a bit fed up with it all. I’m going to attempt to get an August plot tour video made in the next week. Hope you are well too! Xx

Doesn’t it just! I keep thinking it’s time to wind things down in the garden , then have to remind myself it’s still the middle of summer. 😩. Anyway, no rain forecast for today although it’s very chilly.

Our potatoes have all more or less died back too Fiona. Plenty of rain here in July has meant the weeds and grass have almost got out of control. I see you have snails that enjoy climbing as well. Trying to protect plants from slugs and snails seems almost impossible in wet weather. We've only a few brassica plants and some sweet Williams left to plant out unless I make a trip to the garden centre.

I just can’t believe the rain! It’s absolutely poured down again here all afternoon, and all last night. We’re about to start construction of an ark! I wish I had a few more seedlings on the go as I’m starting to see a few spaces in the borders but if the weather doesn’t improve I’d be wasting my time anyway. The big question is, will the potatoes be alright in the ground with all this wet.

@@fionagrows1848 It’s been another wet day here as well. Hopefully the potatoes will survive. Our main problem will be slug attacks. See there’s some suggestions of better weather by the middle of August. Fingers crossed.

I’ve certainly found that squash don’t enjoy being grown in buckets. Mind you, saying that, the big leaf came from a courgette grown in a trough! 🤷‍♀️. Have a good week B &V 😊

What annoys me about snails is that they often just chomp straight through the main stalk of a small plant and kill it outright. Slugs and snails are definitely our main pest problem and I’ve found the only effective way to deal with them is to search for them and remove them. Since I’ve been doing that I don’t have as many casualties. 😊

Actually that’s a good idea….I’m seeing some gaps about to open up in my borders and I could shove a few potatoes in. Nothing to lose! It didn’t work for me last year but if we get a good august and September I might have more luck.

I wish I hadn’t stopped sowing seed. I’m starting to anticipate a few gaps in the borders and I’ve got nothing to put in them. Spinach would be good. Actually, im now going to rifle through my seeds and see if I’ve got any spinach seed to direct sow!! Thanks for the idea!

@@MickyBellRoberts That is an advantage you have in such a hot climate that you have fall gardens. Whilst we do have some late cropping veg most things just grow in that short summer window that we have. I often struggle to get warmth loving things to ripen before the summer is over. Good luck!
