      Not exactly sure why I grow so much of it as I’m the only one who likes it! I’ve realised I’ve got another 10 to find room for😩. I’m wondering at what point I should be referred for counselling for my squash fixation 😂. Have a great weekend 😊

    Omg Fiona those squashes look amazing 💪💪. Oh Dorothy is a brute 😂😂. I have been sowing more flowers among my veg including in the large pots it can only help bring in pollinators. My self seeded marigolds are doing better than the ones I’ve been babying 🤦🏼‍♀️. Looking great Fiona have a super week happy gardening, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

      Hi Ali, I definitely find the self seeded marigolds (and the nasturtiums) are much happier than the ones I sow. The marigolds I sowed myself are still just little tiddlers. I’m very proud of Dorothy😂.

    Hi Fiona, all those squash plants look really healthy and if they carry on at the same rate you're going to have a bumper crop. I like the size of those modules that you have been growing them in. I never give plants very long to harden off. if we get a keen frost now it's really bad luck. I like the idea of mixing flowers and vegetables.

      I’ve found those seed trays really good,. I got about 30 of them second hand from a seed potato company in Northern Ireland at a reasonable price and I use them for most things now. It means that I don’t usually bother with potting on because they’re a good size already. I feel it saves me work and compost in the long run. They’re good sturdy plastic which should last as long as I do so I won’t be having to buy seed trays all the time. Thanks for watching 😊

    Hi Fiona. What a feisty little broody hen. Two of mine were regular broodies. Hamble once went 11 weeks!!! I took her off the nest three times a day and locked her out for at least half an hour each time so she could stretch her legs, eat, drink and poo !!! She did fine although I wished she didn't go on for so long. It can be bad for them if they don't eat and drink enough. I am thinking that some of my squash will go out this weekend. I have three varieties: Uchiki Kuri, Blue Hubbard and Muscade de Provence. I have a 6 ft x 6ft bed prepared for some. Will have to be inventive for where the others go :) I'm definitely with you re having flowers around fruit and veg. Def good for them and beutiful to boot. Have a great weekend. Mags

      11 weeks!! Oh no! I thought they only went about 3..I would have liked to find some fertile eggs for her to sit on but the thought of dispatching any males that hatch is a bit off putting ( I’d probably choke on them if I ate them😂). I realised I’ve still got about another 10 squash in a tray I’d missed😩. I need some new inventive ideas too! Have a lovely weekend in your garden, hope the weather is kind😊

    Wow that’s a lot of squash!! I must admit I’m just as bad we all love them and I always different ones and grow them and most of the time they’re added to the huge varieties😂😂last year I grew honeyboat and crown Prince for the 1st time they’re delicious!! I love your hens I’d really love some chickens but my partner has put his foot down😞but you never I may just have stray few find me on my plot and I can say they’re homeless🤨love your plot and videos Thankyou xx

      I’m glad I’m not the only one😂. I discovered another whole tray of acorn squash id forgotten about 😩. I tried to grow crown prince a couple of years ago (Charles Dowding raves about it) but they failed. I might have to try again….but next year😂. Kenny always stopped me getting hens for years but I managed to leverage him into some panic buying (hens) when the pandemic started…..I hope you can find a way to leverage your fella too!😂😉

      Hi Lynda, when I’ve grown squash in buckets previously I do get a harvest but just a small one. Certainly not as much as I get when they’re planted in the ground. It’s the dodgy compost I’ve put them in that will be the biggest challenge for those little plants…..

    Hi Fiona, thanks for another great video, the allotment is starting to fill up and look fantastic. I noticed that you came through a high gate and fencing that must surround the allotments. Can you not grow some of your spare squash up that. Just a thought, happy growing 😁

    • @fionagrows1848
      @fionagrows1848  Před rokem +1

      Hi Tina, thanks so much. It’s a great idea but there is a path between the fence and the actual allotments, except at the back. I’ve got the shed there but also a trough which I’ll be putting melons in . I’m hoping they’ll climb the fence. I did squash in the trough the last two years and they did a good job of using the fence as a trellis. Great minds think alike!😉

    Hi fiona have you experimented with lacto fermented rhubarb? I remember you talking about it on one of your vids. Have you got a recipe you use? Many thanks

    • @fionagrows1848
      @fionagrows1848  Před rokem

      Hi Emma, I’m onto about my 4th or 5th batch of it now. It’s very simple. Wash and chop up the rhubarb. Put it into a glass jar. Add grated fresh ginger and cardamom (it works fine without these but is tastier with them). I eyeball everything so I haven’t got exact measurements for you. Make up a saline solution using between 2% to 5% salt. I usually go about 3.5%. Use salt with no additives eg Himalayan pink, Maldon sea salt etc. when the salt is dissolved in the water pour it over the rhubarb (the water shouldn’t be too hot, tepid or warm is best. Weight the rhubarb down so it doesn’t float. If you can’t do that just make sure you give it a swish around every day to get the salty water over all the rhubarb. Add a loosely fitting lid. Leave it for about 2 weeks , more if you like. You can add some whey or acv to the water but I don’t usually bother.
      The end result is that the rhubarb loses all of its acidity and sourness. It is not at all sweet though. More like a veg than a fruit. I put a couple of spoonfuls into a smoothie everyday with a spoonful of the saline. It works really well and is a great way to use rhubarb without a ton of sugar.
      Let me know how you get on if you decide to give it a try.😊
