I agree it’s been a difficult year to grow food my French beans have done amazingly I have two huge bags in the freezer and we’ve eaten loads. I must say I’ve grown the beans in the same bed for five years and so far no issues, I just add homemade compost and chicken manure pellets every year before planting. I think the grey skies all through July have had a major impact on some crops like squashes , just not bright enough, but courgettes amazing. I sow my Brussels sprouts in June they are just forming sprouts and I did the same last year and had amazing

Yes, it’s definitely been a tricky year although, as you say, some crops have done well in the damp , cool conditions. I’m just wishing I had room for a poly tunnel to grow a lot more heat loving plants. Glad you’re having a big crop of beans. I’ve tried canning/jarring some of my beans this year to save on freezer space. We haven’t tried them yet so I’m hoping we like like them. It’s a great way to store the veg without having a packed freezer. Thanks for watching! 😊

    Hi Fiona
It sure as been a strange year again, shame about the blight we have been lucky so far.
My early potatoes have been good this year and the main crop is still growing away as happy as larry.
My greenhouse tomatoes have been rubbish as well as my peppers and chillis.
But as we always say there is always next year.

Hi Fiona. What a shame that you have had a poor year for some things. Bad luck getting blight but, as you say, almost inevitable with the weather. My tomatoes have been poor and my strawberries gave practically nothing - they are new plants though so hoping it was just that. My potatoes have been ok so far with more to harvest and my squash look likely to be a big success - I put that down to beginners luck since it's my first year growing them. I think you have had more rain and mugginess than I have had. The great thing about gardening is, there's always another year. Here's hoping we all get better growing weather next year. Take care. Mags

Yes, it’s been a difficult year but not a total loss. I’m glad you’re having success with your potatoes and squash. It’s my squash fail I’m most disappointed with (although I’m sure Kenny is secretly pleased as he’s not a fan😂). My tomatoes are still very green and I should really go and strip the plants of leaves to force them to ripen. I usually stop watering them to hasten ripening but that hasn’t been an option this year as they’re outside and it’s rained so much (rivers running down the street again yesterday with a huge cloud burst). Never mind, as you say, there’s next year!

Ah 🤔 I put my beans in relatively fresh compost because I grow them with corn 🌽 and pumpkins in a so called three sister bed (milpa garden bed) normally they grow together very well but this year I hardly see blossoms on the beans. Good that you're growing your aubergines 🍆🍆🍆 in a greenhouse. Normally I could harvest them by now 🍆🍆🍆but this year they're blooming only now. Here it's still very hot so they still have a chance to grow but normally we get the temperatures that you have up there three days later here. I must say I would not mind because it's soooo hot. Have a nice weekend. Greetings Heidi 👩‍🌾💕

Ha ha ! We’re never happy with our weather, are we! We have hardly been able to sit out in the garden since June it’s been so miserable. It’s definitely feeling autumnal here today. I’m just not sure when to harvest the aubergines. I don’t know if they’re ready or not.🤷‍♀️. Mine have still got plenty of flowers on too, but I don’t think they’ll have time to ripen. I’d like to try the 3 sisters but I think I’ve heard that it’s a struggle to get the corn to grow here.

😂😂 omg Fiona that is a huge corguette hopefully the seeds come true. My favourite time of year actually it’s cooler and I can make plans and changes which I find half the fun. In southern America they eat fried green tomatoes as a regular dish. I ripen mine in newspaper or on window sill. I’m like you I love sprouts but it’s a long process and a huge bed space plus they are cheap to buy that few for Christmas 😂😂.

Hi Fiona, I stick to growing Crimson Crush tomatoes outdoors as they seem to manage to survive any blight attacks. They taste pretty good too. Doesn't matter where I grow lettuce it just provides the slugs and snails with plenty of food. Shame about Blight getting the potatoes as well, fortunately, we seem to have avoided it this year. It has seemed very autumnal to me for a few weeks now.

You’re the second person to recommend crimson crush for blight resistance. I’ll have to try and remember to get some for next year although the tomatoes in the back garden are still ok, thankfully! It’s my rhubarb that suffers the worst with slugs and snails. They’ve made an absolute mess of it. Autumn has definitely arrived here. Seems so early. But I could have done with the wood burner getting lit tonight it’s so chilly in the house.😢
