  • We've found available local resource. A dumping area for our council tree surgeons will provide us with an endless supply of firewood and wood chips.
My cucumber seeds have eventually burst into life and need attention. The salad border has given me some surprise lettuces.

The logs are even better than the chips. It will save us a fortune in fuel next winter.

Our local council did this last year cut down lots of trees and left it all in the woodland next to the allotments. So lots of people took the logs to use for wood burners. The council weren’t happy and now there are notices on the trees in the woods saying it’s not allowed to remove the logs they belong to the council and they are just going to leave them on the floor! 🙄 Love your girls having a little egg celebration in the background 😆

Blimey, I hope our council don’t do that! I doubt anyone would take any notice though! We’ve probably gathered enough wood to last at least a year already and we’ll be going back and forth this week getting lots more chips for lots of projects. 🐓🐔

Yes, we’re delighted! Ordering a load of wood chips is stupidly expensive, and as for logs for the fire…..crazy expensive.

Hi Fiona, good find that wood chip and logs. Luckily we can get the council to drop a lorry load off at the allotments when we need some. The chickens seemed to like it. I've noticed that a lorry load of wood chippings can get very hot in the middle. I've thought about trying to germinate parsnips in a similar manner to those cucumbers. We always have trouble germinating parsnips. Good idea to grow salad leaves at home rather than the allotment. Lovely sunny day here after a cold and frosty start.

Better still if the council will drop the chips at your allotment! Luckily Kenny has a van so transporting the stuff is easy enough. I was amazed by the heat coming off the fresh woodchips. I’ve just put my squash seeds in a little tub to germinate them as I always have trouble with them. It’s a bit early for them but it’s taken an age to get them started in the past so I wanted to give them plenty of time. Bright, sunny but freezing east breeze here the last few days….classic easter weather!

Hi Fiona our council cut down trees for the new road by our allotment and happy dropped the chippings on site , but since then won't do any more drops as say we don't use it , belive me no sooner was it dropped than it was gone, and our local tree surgeon wants big money for his now as before was happy just get rid of it , how times change.

It all seems a bit too good to be true to be honest, and I’m just expecting the rug to get pulled from under our feet at any minute. I don’t think community cooperation and helping each other out is high on the list of priorities for councils generally!
