  • I'm planting out three varieties of tomatoes today. I'm also comparing hardened off v's non hardened off courgettes.

      Peonies! Aren’t they divine! They really don’t last long though .

    Hi Fiona
    Great update again.
    If I am planting Tomatoes outside I let them do there own thing and leave the side chutes on if I plant them in the greenhouse I take the side chutes out as they are closer together.
    Your mystery plant looks like a pepper or chilli to me.
    When I plant out my Courgettes I make a small mound and plant them in so the stems do not get water logged.
    I noticed you are getting close to that 1,000 subscribers, you deserve it.
    Take care.
    👍👍👍👍👍

      Thanks Rob, with a bit of luck I’ll be joining you in the 1k club soon🎉😂. I’m glad you’ve mentioned that about leaving side shoots on, I’ve recently heard that elsewhere and I like the idea. Apparently that person ended up with 30% more tomatoes ! As for the mystery plant…my rather unreliable plant app suggested ground cherry. 🤷‍♀️. I’ll be pleased if you’re right!

    fiona, be very careful when you sink bamboo canes in the ground. try not to be directly above them. they can, on occasion, snap and cause serious problems ( specially if you catch an eye )......................brian

      That very prospect is always in my mind when I sink them😳. It would be a very nasty injury to be sure. I also need to get some bottles to put over the ones at eye level. Thanks for watching 😊

    Hi Fiona you were having fun with your canes but be careful don't end up hurting yourself,
    I used to like I when I got my tomato plants from mom and dad they would say these are tall one these Bush that was it they knew the names I didn't,
    Your busy now and it's just going get more busy.

      They’re in , and I don’t have to think about it again!! They’ve all got tall canes so whatever they do it’ll be fine. It’s just very busy in the garden just now, isn’t it!? Hope you’re on top of all your allotment jobs and can put your feet up and watch it grow😊

    Hi Fiona in all the years I have been growing tomatoes I never new till recently there were determinate and indeterminate I have always treated them all the same. I shouldn’t worry at all. I don’t put canes in if they are outside till they get tall enough to need them. That’s how I do it.

    • @fionagrows1848
      @fionagrows1848  Před rokem

      Hi Mandy, that’s great to hear. Mine have all got colossal canes🤣, so whatever happens, I’m sorted! I usually wait until the tomatoes need supporting before I put the canes in but I wanted to be organised this year . My biggest issue now is the washing line getting in the way!🤦‍♀️

    Hi Fiona, your tomato plants look really good. Our courgettes and cucumber are really slow this year haven't got any planted out in the allotment yet. That mystery plant didn't look like the aubergines I've tried to grow in the past but I'm no expert on aubergine plants. It was warm here Saturday 24°C ish but started off much cooler on Sunday. Good luck with the melons.

    • @fionagrows1848

      The “ aubergine “ plant remains a complete mystery. I’ve have quite a few suggestions and the one thing it isn’t is an aubergine!😂. Oh well, I think I’ll just keep it and see what grows. 24 degrees is hot! Hopefully that will spur on you courgettes and cucumbers. My cucumbers seem slow too .

    It looked like you was getting a bit frustrated with your canes and confused with the toms and then trying to hang yourself in a washing line 🤣your peas look great,thanks for showing us your melons 😉take care 👍

    Roma tomatoes are definitely NOT indeterminate. Here in Southern California they grow to between 4-5 feet. I use a heavy duty wire panel to form a cage to support them. The Moneymaker and Red Cherry tomatoes I have grown in the past have been indeterminate. Your garden looks lovely. Good harvests to you!

    • @fionagrows1848
      @fionagrows1848  Před rokem

      That’s good to know! I’m actually wondering whether I shouldn’t have just planted the Roma in the greenhouse. Our season is short and the temperatures are cool here in the north of England and I’m thinking the Roma might struggle. Anyway! Too late now! We will see what happens 😅. Thanks for watching 😊

    Hi Fiona I think all your toms are indeterminate, but I could be mistaken. I normally grow indeterminate and I’ve grown your varieties before. I’m growing a determinate for the first time which is a tumbling Tom.👍🏻🤠

    Eh up, tha’s not the only one who is confused about tomatoes. I’ve been gardening for donkeys years and can’t tell which is which except Moneymaker which grows straight up. The only bush ones I definitely know is Tumbling Tom. So I grow mine all the same. Keep up the good work.

    Hiya Fiona. I think I grew Roma a couple of years ago thinking they were indeterminate but they were determinate. I could be wrong though 🥴. It’s a great time of year, getting things out. I built a couple of new beds today and planted in one of them. I was just about to do the other when my bees started swarming - argh! Half the hive has gone to pastures new. 😟. How is your broody girl?

    • @fionagrows1848
      @fionagrows1848  Před rokem

      Oh blimey, swarming bees! I’d love to keep bees in theory but it does seem a bit scary ….but surely it means you’ve got a healthy hive if they’re expanding enough to split🤷‍♀️. Miss broody is just the same. We reckon it’s been about two weeks now. Poor thing, she’s lost her place in the pecking order and the new girl is bullying her when we toss her off the nest to eat. I hope it ends soon.

      Last year I hardly supported them at all and the whole lot flopped over and did their own thing. They still produced a good haul of tomatoes. So whatever happens this year it’ll be ok….as long as we don’t get struck by blight. Happy gardening Ali, have a great weekend!😊
