The Australian government never admits anything until practically all who have suffered are dead then they do something that’s my opinion as someone who has lived here for a lifetime. My whole entire family served in the NZ armed services from WW1 WW2 right through and when I asked my dad that I was interested in joining the army he very sternly said no son of mine is ever going to war and I respected his wish , now as a middle aged man I understand why .

It sickens me that we continually have to acknowledge aboriginals but nothing said about Australian who went to war for this country and those that never returned. Hardly a mention of them. Bloody pathetic.

ONE of the reasons the "Australian Government" doesn't compensate our Vets over agent Orange is because the UNITED STATES Government made it LAW that they cannot be held responsible, therefore cannot and WILL not pay. And according to International Law, Our Government is not allowed to pay for YOUR Governments mistakes.

I'm a proud Aussie who's now in his early 60's. I can still remember when this song was released. I can't listen to it without shedding a tear, thinking about what they went through! 20/07/1969, I was only 7 years old and knew nothing about the Vietnam war but I can vaguely remember watching Neil Armstrong take his first step on the moon, sitting next to my parents in front of a tv. Even though high school, we were taught very little about Vietnam. It wasn't until I started a plumbing apprenticeship, working with a team of tradesmen. One of these tradesmen "Terry", an aboriginal returned serviceman, told me of the troubles coming home. We never spoke about anything that happened over there, only how they were treated afterward. I had the greatest respect for Terry who taught me many skills, both old and new to use as a plumber! I lost contact with him many years ago but I hope he has had a wonderful life! Every ANZAC Day, I light a candle housed in an old horse drawn wagon wheel hub, I memorial to all who have served! Lest we forget 🙏

The Herd, an Aussie hip hop group, did this song as well. It's a beautiful tribute, and appeals to those with different musical backgrounds. I love Redgums version, and I love the Herds version of I was only 19. ❤

I saw a brilliant comment by a Vietnam Vet who said the reason WW2 vets were able to intergrate easier was because most of them spent weeks on a boat with men who had shared experiences and they were able to talk it out before landing. Vietnam vets went back in 2s and 3s and were back stateside in hours.

There is a version dome by a Aussie band called The Herd. Granted it is an Aussie hip hop band, but i love that it brings rhis song to a younger generation, and makes it more meaningful to rhe younger generation. Red Gum gave them the rights, and also feature in the last chorus! Definitely recommend giving that version a listen. Lest We Forget.

My Great Grandfather and Grandfather were Anzacs and I used to be very proud to be Aussie but I didn’t bother even getting up on Anzac Day this year and I will never get up for it again we spit on our diggers every year and it’s pathetic.

Also the hangas or (shed like building) theyre in after they came back to camp were QAMR (Queen alexanders mounted rifles) old hangers when the unit was still in waiouru before moving 2 more times, that use to be home to LAV, Scorpian tanks before being fazed out, and m113s early 2000s i use roam there as akid when my old man was based there 🥺 many memories, the units emblem is still on the outside of the end hanga. When it was 389s turn to do that same HQ urban ops 2 weeks later, the section i was in we went out at like 6pm at night for a so called "hearts and minds" well we went straight to the main strip of town sent our bombardier and 1 of the other recruits un-marked like recruits to order pizza, ate it under a tree that had drooping branchs so other camp staff couldnt see us, when we marched back in the HQ it was wrecked they had the outta walls smashed, fences pulled apart, and i believe a mock kidnapping people got into small ish scuffles while we were all smiles and asking what happened 😂😂😂❤ everybody did not like us for a while ofcourse

Funny story about sa major morrison when him and my old man went to basic he managed to get himself, my old man and few others drunk the day they first arrived all of them trying to stand at attention was the funniest my dad says 😂
