"Why didn't the russian's have gasmasks?" I would guess because gas wasn't used that much before so they were caught off guard? The wet scarfs could protect them a little bit I guess from teargas but this was first time they met this kind of gas.
Thank you! That makes sense.
@@JustAnotherArmyVet as my grandfather would always say "things that are known now had to be unknown at some point"
@@bigfrankfraser1391 very good quote! And very true
@@JustAnotherArmyVet yeah, he was an interesting old man, dunkirk veteran and very big fan of the spice girls,
@@bigfrankfraser1391 he sounds like he was an amazing man!!! I doubt you’ll come across many Dunkirk Veterans, who like the Spice Girls!!! 😄😄
Thanks to Sabaton telling about him, I listened to the Sabaton song Defence of Moscow. I watched the Sabaton version first, then Radio Tapok. It was a very intense feeling to hear a russian sing about that subject. Much heartfelt. You do the same, definitely worth listening to.
I will do that. Thanks for the recommendation. 👍🙂
@@JustAnotherArmyVet You do so Kylie. There's some documentary footage from the actual fighting in the Radio Tapok video you might find interesting. He sings in russian , so it's good to have the lyrics from Sabaton first.
@@carinarodebak9419 thanks !! 👍
I study chemistry in university. You can 't imagine how strong Br is. If a drop of it comes in contact with hand for example, it will go thought all of it and keep going down, like nothing was in its way. Germans used it mixed, so it didn 't have that crazy feature.
Can it eat through metal? That sounds scary. So the chlorine alters the effects of the bromine. Interesting! Why did they even use bromine mixed with chlorine? What was the point of the bromine?
@@JustAnotherArmyVet It is toxic and very effective. It is also very light, in gas condition and can be released from its bond with other elements very easily. Also their aim was to make a toxic gas, not poison.
Ahhh okay 👍
Because of this song I've been to the Osowiec Fortress. It's 2,5 hours driving from my place. I remember the giude allowed me to lift the empty gas bottle which is in their museum - werid feeling.
Wizna with the grave of kpt. Raginis and the line of bunkers are 40 km from Osowiec (which is also the centre of the Biebrza National Park - the largest in Poland)
Radio Tapok (tapok- rus. kind of shoes; see Sabaton - a foot protection in knight's armour) is a great guy and great artist. Watch his video of the Attack of the Dead Men in Russian which was released earlier than Sabaton's song, like so. said with the fragments from a short film about this battle,. BTW there is an English version of this mini movie on yt.
Thanks for reacting to Sabaton's History about the Osowiec Fortress .
You are awesome! Thank you for sharing your story. I think it would be an interesting trip to visit that Fortress. 🙂👍
@@JustAnotherArmyVet I've checked today and they say that from Sep 1, 2023 it's closed to tourists. There is the Polish Army unit there. When I visited it I needed to show my PL ID and it was forbidden to take photos in the modern part. Now, it's closed due to the season off or political situation, I don't know.
@@agnieszkazuk interesting. I wonder why it’s closed 🤔
Sabaton History is a great channel, because they explain the story behind their songs.
Chlorine gas was the first chemical weapon used during WW1, because it was cheap and available, from water treatment plants.
However, Chlorine gas was neutralized by rain and also soldiers without gas masks would piss on a piece of cloth and cover their face with it, because the Ammonia would also neutralize Chlorine gas and gave the soldiers a chance to pass the gas cloud.
The second gas used was Phosgene (COCl2). Phosgene was synthesized by the Cornish chemist John Davy in 1812 by exposing a mixture of carbon monoxide and chlorine to sunlight. He named it "phosgene" from Greek φῶς (phos, light) and γεννάω (gennaō, to give birth) in reference of the use of light to promote the reaction. It is also produced when Chloroform is exposed to sunlight. Of course the weaponized version was industrially produced by catalytically combining CO and Cl2.
Its main advantage over Chlorine is that it is colorless and smells like grass while symptoms of poisoning could appear from 2-6h up to 48h after exposure and phosgene was responsible for the large majority of chemical weapon deaths in WW1.
Phosgene is also known by its military designation, “CG.”
The third chemical weapon used in WW1 was Mustard gas, first used by the German army against British and Canadian soldiers near Ypres, Belgium and later also against the French. Yperite is the name used by the French, because the compound was first used at Ypres. The Allies did not use mustard gas until November 1917 at Cambrai, France, after the armies had captured a stockpile of German mustard shells. It took the British more than a year to develop their own mustard agent weapon.
Thanks for sharing! You always have good insight . It’s sad that chemical weapons were even invented. They’re so horrible !! But yes, Sabaton does actually care about history and likes to give light to stories such as this one.
Scariest part is the gas could just as easily be blown back to their own lines. Wonder how often that actual happened.
You are right! And I am sure that happened quite a few times…
looking at the history it seems they would wait for days, watching for the correct weather conditions to avoid as much backflow as possible.
Never underestimate an angry Russian! Also, the other Sabaton History video involving the use of gas in WW1 answers the question of why the Russians didn't have gas masks. Short answer is, chem weapons were too new, and Russian bureaucratic corruption.
Well said!! Do you know the name of the video?
@@JustAnotherArmyVet czcams.com/video/Fi_ql1ZDdwo/video.html
Thanks for sharing !
The reason the Russians didn't have gas masks comes down to two factors: gas was a fairly new weapon and the Russian industry lagging behind. There's a part two to this video where Indy goes into more detail. Russian chemists actually had a major role in the development of gas warfare but Russian industry just wasn't able to follow the development.
Ahh great! I’ll have to check out that video. Thank you for your insight!!
There is a calendar difference but there is also some kind of hatred or rather looking down on Slavic people as lower or Subhuman by the Germans and other western people, especially in the first half of the 20th century, and arguably till this day...
A lot of people would agree with that…
you should listen to 40:1 and 4859 and do the same with the background (both songs are about Poland)
I will check them out! They are Sabaton?
4859 is one of the best. The story of that brave man is something else.
