Exactly, the standing order was pretty much for small cut of groups to conduct guerrilla warfare to the best of their abilities until they managed to econnect with command. The part about conscription creating bonds for life is so true, I still regularly speak to people i did my conscription with 15 years ago, and it's like no time has passed.
Thank you for clarifying! Yes, I still have a few buddies from basic training and medic school I talk to (as well as friends from my active duty units as well)
In short, we in Sweden trained to fight the fight that Ukraine is fighting right now. Out-gunned, Out-manned with very few resources. Half of my training in the Swedish artillery was about guerilla warfare.
The mine was a "Stridsvagnsmina 5". Anti-tank mine model 5. In case of war half of our trucks in the company would be filled with mines. We even had a 55 pound Claymore for soft skinned vehicles.
Yes, the decision making in the Swedish army would be on a lower level than in almost any army in the world. I was a sergeant and I have come to realize that I in many situations had the decision making power of a lieutenant in most other armies.
Thank you for your insight about how much decision-making power you have. It is always good to get perspectives from other soldiers and countries.
I agree, we are taught to use very small groups and more or less fight until we no longer have the ability to, even with only scavenging weapons... another thing is the high level of training in navigation we get, it starts already in school around 3-4th grade.
Excellent series. I am so pleased you did this reaction. It is strange to watch this because it brings back memories. Just the vehicles and clothing! :D At the same time being very important for younger people to be aware of their modern history.
Now Sweden is in NATO and I am happy we are under the nuclear umbrella (Kaliningrad and Kola peninsula is just a stones throw away.) however what you said about nuclear weapons was spot on. All the best from Sweden!
Thank you so much for your support and kind words! I really enjoyed this series 🙂

I've seen this series a couple of times, but it was interesting to watch you react to it. As a swede, I wish we hadn't been so naive when the cold war ended. We could really have needed this extensive defense planning right now.
Thank you for watching the videos. I do appreciate it. Even if Sweden did half the amount of planning now that did during the Cold War, I think Sweden would still come out of ahead. 👍
An amazing series indeed. But I also want to give credit to you for an equally in-depth commentary on the whole series. Kudos to you!

There it was again, the "Whiskey on the rocks-incident"... It feels belittening(?), like a joke - a fun anecdote (?)... As I said before, this little incident with a Soviet sub loaded with nukes stranded 60 km (appr 40 miles) from my home and the entire Soviet Baltic Fleet teaming (?) up on International water - and a few miles inside Swedish water, scared the shit out of us... I made my military service in 1980-1981.
In that time both the miliatary and civilian defence was enormous.
Every man with able body and mind had to serve.
Most in the military but some also as medics or firefighters etc.
Medical personnell also had to stay at their jobs during war. Some were also expected to work in military field hospitals.
What we have now is of course technically much more advanced and we have proffessional military personnell, but the military is just a tiny fraktion of the size during the cold war.
The civilian defence is pretty much no more.
I my view we have a lot of re-building to do.
What was your job in the military?
@@JustAnotherArmyVet
I was just a regular private infantry man.
We were all conscripts at that time.
Just officers and NCOs were professional.
And I was back for repetition training again in 1985.
Before the next repetition training they cut the army down a lot so I was then struck from the military reserve.
But I believe that I could still handle an AK4 or a KSP58 today if I would really have to.

Sweden also had a nuclear weapons programme in the 1960s, and had the tensions with the Soviet Union escalated and the Swedes had pursued this further, it could have acted as a deterrent as well to avoid that "puzzle" to force Sweden to surrender.

Yes, it was indeed a rather terrifying time growing up during the cold-war. As one who's approaching 50 - I remember still the weekly drills we had in school, where we were supposed to learn where the closest bunker was in the area and in the school (or perhaps monthly, cannot remember 100%).
And on top of that we used to have the Soviet military invading our sea- & air-spaces on a quite regular basis as well - I remember several times Soviet U-boats actually ran aground a couple of times, one time actually even just a few kilometers from where I live, Göteborg/Gothenburg (and our military, or perhaps rather airforce and navy, also knew of the ones which were not so obvious). So, in short - it was a rather tense time, to be sure.
Which of course have lead most of the residents of Sweden to hate, or at strongly detest the Russian, aggressive government(s)!
We might not have a big army, navy and airforce. At least not in numbers - although the numbers of both youngster wanting to join the army has grown significantly, as has also the ones who volunteers, either as 'civilian' or...hmm, 'coast-guard-duty-men/women' [if that makes sense?]. But first and foremost we have state-of-the art, mostly 'home-grown' military gear (created specifically for domestic, guerilla-style purposes) as well as other NATO-style weaponry, and also a highly motivated, trained and professional personnel!
Thank you for sharing your perspective and your thoughts. Yes, I can imagine it was a very scary time.!
@@JustAnotherArmyVet Thank you. I'm from Sweden, which I failed to mention.
And I can tell you with confidence that not only Sweden has a highly relevant fear and also hatred for Russia (or rather it's Russian government to be precise), but is pretty much shared by everyone who has a border with Russia or has either tried to be conquered by Russia or been forced to live under the Russian/Soviet boot, so to speak.
Which include pretty much everyone around the Baltic - and also other countries that borders Russia!
Just as a sidenote here: WHAT on earth are they trying to 'accomplish' with this kind of behavior, really? I mean - not 'only' do they not get, or have many friends or allies? They have actually gotten surrounded by countries in which people really hates them, or at the very least detest them.
Sure, none of us wants war - so I don't believe for a second that any of these countries would be interested in starting one. BUT, with that said - no one wants anything to do with them either...render them pretty much isolated! (Which obviously cannot be good, neither financially, nor for innovation - or the trading of ideas....I just cannot understand what they are trying to get out of this hostile approach....and I seriously doubt I'm the only one that is thinking like I do.).
So - there it is, I got to say it at least! ;-)
Cheers from Sweden
@@MrZenGuitarist not including India, Russia is friends with a lot of the bad actor countries, such as North Korea and Iran (and to an extent, China)…. Respect from South Carolina! Cheers!
@@JustAnotherArmyVet Yeah, I know...but that is not a 'badge of honor' so to speak - as you surely know!
That's what I meant really - no democratic country wants anything to do with them in any way! So - they're left with the other autocratic regimes in the world. Which by the way are also both highly sanctioned and also pretty much seen as pariahs of the world!
Respect and unity to all of us who stands up against tyranny!

Thats right. :)
I reacted to that series as well 🙂 czcams.com/video/qofZ1ajESHc/video.htmlsi=8DMINcSwLr5_FEsZ
Technically I knew a lot of this, long before this documentary, even though it was before my time. Mostly due to the involvement of formative influences and their subsequent effect on me. Tbh it felt much like ancient lore. When I did my military service the idea that I might see combat seemed ridiculous. Even if I'd applied there's no way that I was up to the standards of those sent on UN missions. I never felt that it was that much more than a ritual really.
Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has changed all that though. It's quite amazing how our entire population has switched from "we'll never see a war here" to "build more weapons now!" so fast. Even for Sweden it's somewhat jarring. Apparently we're warlike again suddenly and (almost) everyone's on board with that. It's a shame we got rid of -the majority of our god damn military- before that conclusion but that tracks quite well with our modern history.
Thank you so much for your insight! When were you in the military?
@@JustAnotherArmyVet Not in the same way you were in the army. I was conscripted, trained and discharged. It was in the early 2003-4 iirc. Just after school. Before university though.
I just coincidentally found out that someone close to me was in charge of watching the gripen pilots and submarine commanders during that time. Apparently a lot of Polish "painters" showed up at those houses and those houses only.

Sweden had secret deals with the US from the 1950s and forward. The Swedish signal interception agency (FRA) had extensive cooperation with the Swedes using the latest US signal interception equipment and relaying the results back. A CIA-organized stay-behind unit was also formed.
Runways were built to NATO standards to be used as emergency airfields. The enemy always came from the east.
I served in the first military unit that officially was under direct US command. We were attached to 1st AD in Bosnia in December 95
My first unit in Germany was 1AD 🙂

Hungary is pissed because Sweden poo-poo them a lot in EU debates for their return to fascism... This was just payback... Same thing with Turkey, Erdogan is insulted EU won't even really seriously regard letting Turkey join, they have a truly horrible human rights record, trade with Russia etc so that ain't happening. Awe thank you!! I really appreciate your support and kind words! When is it predicted that Sweden will get official membership into NATO?
@@JustAnotherArmyVet The only thing left was for the Hungarian president to sign the paper but, she was fired for pardoning a guy who was silencing people in a paedophile ring or something, it's a whole story. Note that in Decembriana (December's events) the communists killed thousands of people by summarily condemning to death in "peoples courts".
Any one who was not with them was labeled as a collaborator, people who were with them during the occupation years but did not want to fight against the Greek government and of course police and security forces were brutally killed.
The events in Syntagma Square were the excuse to start the Decembriana (the Battle of Athens), as the offices of the communist party in Athens had been evacuated a week before and police stations in the countryside have been attacked days before.
The organization X was a minor group that did not play a significant role in Decembriana.
The main communist attacks were against the barracks of the "Makriyannis" (Long John) gendarmery regiment, whose fierce resistance resulted in the communists defeat in December of 1944.
The battle took place where the Acropolis museum stands today, with only the regiment's HQ building being preserved as a memorial of the battle.
Also after this battle, the gendarmery's personnel was viewed as equals to the army personnel, who considered them as lackeys of the ruling class and despised them until then.
The Greek Communist Party became legal in 1978 and the term Greek Civil War was officially adopted in 1989.
Before that it was called as the Communist Gang or Bandits War.
Since the party has become legal, has the communist party been getting bigger every year?
@otherArmyVet No, they have actually split in two main parties and a number of smaller ones.
We had a joke about it, saying that the last communist committed suicide because he could not split any more.
The original KKE (Greek Communist Party), only gets steadily about 5--6% of the vote and is so fixed in it's rhetoric no one takes them seriously.
We used to joke that the factory closed down, but the dealership in Greece didn't get the message yet.
The second party SYRIZA appeared as a more center - left party, but they are more fanatic leftist globalists.
It was this party that started from about 3.5% and ended up governing Greece in 2015 to 2019 by cooperating with a right wing party and dropped the Greek Socialist Party PASOK (Center), that governed Greece for many years since 1981, to the third place with about 12%.
PASOK was founded in 1974 by Andreas Papandreou, a leftist Greek and American citizen and a Berkley CA professor with a long and turbulent history in Greek politics since 1960.
SYRIZA sold to the Greek people so many lies and as a government did exactly the opposite, that lost the 2019 elections and dropped to a far second place with about 13% in the 2023 elections.
Their new president of that party is a young Greek American shipowner from NY, married with an American guy, who is very controversial to them and they already split into 3-4 factions.
Frankly I hope the dropped back to the 3.5% they once had, because they proved worst than the KKE.
One, like me, may totally disagree with the KKE, but they are a serious political party, contrary to these guys in SYRIZA that are a mixed bunch of radical leftists and center left socialists with globalist beliefs.
It will be interesting to see how things will turnout in the elections for the EU Parliament in June and if the party I am in will make a comeback.
We have been out of the Greek parliament since 2012 and the EU parliament since 2014, but the two parties that replaced us in parliament, the right wing party that sided with the leftists and an extreme right neo Nazi party are both out of the way, wile three right wing parties that replaced them, don't seem to measure up.
At the same time, the governing center right New Democracy party has adopted the WOKE and global warming agendas of the left, infuriating both the Church and it's right wing voters.
Since we are a conservative right wing party, closer to your Republican party, with an agenda closer to Donald Trump's (minus the flamboyant character), we will see how things work out for us in June.
This is a description of the current Greek political situation.
@@JustAnotherArmyVet I answered your question two days ago but I don't see it here, so I will answer again in a shorter version that might get through.
No they did not get bigger, they actually split in to two main parties and a number of lesser ones.
The original KKE gets around 5.5% standard and keeps to the same obsolete rhetoric it always had and refusing to cooperate with anybody else.
The other leftist party, with a more pro-European approach, started out at about 3.5% and did grow by absorbing the center-left part of the Greek socialist party and formed a government with a small right wing party in 2015.
However, because they did the opposite from what they said, they lost the 2019 and the 2023 elections to the center right party.
Although based on the election results they are the main opposition party, current polls give them 13% with the socialists getting a 14% and the governing for a second term center-right party is getting 31% (they got 41% and 158/300 MPs in the last election).
With these poll results, the center right is far ahead, while the opposition parties of the left are facing a crisis and at least one of three right wing parties represented in is gaining from it's 4% (now 9-11% in the polls).
I hope this answer will not be deleted by YT.

“When the War Comes” touches upon this a little bit actually.

Shame Sweden’s military is not as potent as when these clips were made. Sweden can boast about 50000 troops including reserves, neighbouring Finland can boast 1100000 from only half the population.
