It's not an option. Even if we are invaded and the government is forced to notify us as such, surrender is not an option. The most difficult thing is not to invade a country, the most difficult thing is to maintain power over a people who do not want to be held.

I remember being a young man in the 80:s and after my service as a recon soldier in the north of Sweden we got a paper from the def.forces with a code - two letters and two colours f.e .Tango Foxtrot ( the swedish ones) and two squares with f.e.blue and red. Showing this paper with our ID;s would grant us faster train ,bus or airplane tickets and from there we had a adress and a village in northen Sweden were we were supposed to meet within 24 hours. I believe that we were retired as recon soldiers at the age of 36 and placed in other places and functions in the army or police.

About the comment on Sweden having been a militarized country. It is quite true. I grew up in a town with a population of ~100 000 (Linköping). In that town there were three different regiments who produced infantry, artillery and logistics units. Every day you would see fighter jets in the sky. Me and all my friends went through military training after high school (this was 1985 - 86) and no one thought much about it, our fathers and grandfathers had done the same. It is indeed interesting when you look back at it. I never used to think ”militarized country”, I knew of nothing else. But it was, for sure.

I was a professional army officer back in the 1980-90's and I am now active in the Swedish Civilförsvaret (the civilian defense organization). The total defense organization back in the cold war era was extremely well developed and organized. The mobilization that would take place in the event of a war were expected to have been done in a time of between 12-72 hours. Very fast for a conscript defense organization, most people was aware of this, but what most people didn't know was how deep that transition to society version 2 was, going back to a peace organization /society again would take several years!

We had long since the founding of that storage been mechanized and had no need for any horse troughs whatsoever.
Now, the ÖB of the time and his staff realized that it wasn't tenable to keep such a massive pile of old equipment anymore and gave a suggestion to the politicians: "cut all this stuff, and then once it is cut, replace it with new stuff!"

It's a shame that we dismantled the contingency stocks we had during the Cold War. We had a large warehouse that I cycled past on my way to the beach in the summers as a child. Dad had pointed it out to me and told me what it was, but still I didn't see it 9 out of 10 times I rode by even though I always looked for it. It was surprisingly hidden even though it was so close to the road.
In the middle of the village, an old barn building remained, next to the school's soccer field. We always kicked the ball against the barn wall. To our great great surprise when the Cold War ended we witnessed tank after tank after tank rolling out of that barn. Talk about hide in plain sight, when we who lived in the small village had no idea what was stored right in the center.

I think one of the most interesting things is all the planning behind the total defence system. Someone has been thinking about how many glows are needed, what type of material and how are they going to be distributed to the place where they are needed. Same with all other things from fuel, sugar, ammunition, water, bandages, cars, trucks and everything. And depending on what type of scenario the planning was slightly different. And all the people that had a small role in making the system work. From people in the military and hospitals to people working at food factories or at the daycare taking care of the children while their parents doing their part.
So so much planning behind all this.

So for example if you already knew how to drive and liked it. It was more likely for you to become a driver. But of course some got forced into a position they didn't want. Myself I scored low on the phyical but higher on the cognative tests. So I got three choises, 15 month at army HQ down in Stockholm, 15 months at a signals regiment or 12 months as a signals-platoon leader at a artillery regiment in the town i'm from. The way a placement was chosen for you was often based on your civilian occupation and/or education. A cook in civilian life would most likely be a field cook in the military. A car mechanic would likely be a mechanic on trucks and cars or be trained on servicing tanks or even aircraft.
Also today your placement is ultimately chosen for you, however you will likely be presented with more than one job and than you can tell them which one you'd like the most but of course often you won't get your first pick. I wanted to be a military policeman but was reassigned 5 weeks before reporting in. I became a IFV driver. I had just gotten my civilian driving license and had no experience what so ever in veichle service. I was really out of my element but one learns. In hindsight it was incredibly good for me and I graduated with very good marks. If you're assigned to something that's not your first pick, go in with a positive attitude because you will undoubtedly learn something you probably wouldn't have otherwise, then do everything in your power to become as good at it as you can
