The Pogues ,the band played waltzing Matilda or Shane McGowan version is respectful is a Anzac Day must for all Australian,my opinion the best music ever penned to paper
@@brendoncrofts6714 I will check out thanks!
I think that you might like the version that John Farnham did with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
It might make more sense for the storyline.
I think that you'll like it.
They're mates and often did guest appearances, together.
Thank you ❤
@@BRONWENYOUNG-WHITFORDE-cb8jc thanks! I will check it out 🙂
I am a 57yr old aussie and I've watched these guys live in small clubs so many times. I absolutely loved your genuine reaction. I am blown away that America, thanks to the internet, are really only now discovering Chisels. Your take on what the song is about is different to mine but that's the beauty, we are both right. If it touched you then that's all that is important. I'll sub.
Thanks so much for subbing and for your support! I really enjoyed this song. My next Aussie video / should be “I Was Only 19” next month 🙂. Greetings from South Carolina! 🤗
The break up of a relationship using war as a metaphor for the nature of the relationship. Basically toxic and betrayal of love
Great explanation! 👍
The second singer, Jimmy Barnes, is a total legend in Australia, currently recovering from heart surgery. 😢 We all wish him well.
I hope he recovers and is back on his feet soon! 💙🙏
Ian Moss is a great guitarist and fair singer as well though mate. I rate him above Jimmy personally.
Great Reaction, thanks from Australia. For another lock at Cold Chisel on war check Khe Sanh, as a vet you'll totally get that one, about returrned Vietnam vets. Get the official release for the lyrics.
Thank you!!! Will do 👍🙂
You should react to Khe Sanh by these guys . There's no doubt about what that's all about . A truly great story told about a returned Vietnam vet.
Definitely on my list 🙂👍
Ringside Concerts 2003 20 years after they disbanded, some in the audience weren't even born when this was recorded. Great Band!!!!
I bet a lot of parents took their older children!!! Must have been a great experience!
Thanks heaps for reacting to this, had a feeling you would like it. Cold Chisel are an incredible band you should check them out performing “Khe Sanh” Written by pianist Don Walker, "Khe Sanh" concerns an Australian Vietnam veteran dealing with his return to civilian life. I would check out the offical Lyric video so you can concentrate on the Words being sung
You are welcome!! I actually filmed this video about 7 months ago. I was holding it in reserve in case I needed a video during a break (because we just moved and are very busy). I hope to start filming again within the next week or so. And thanks for watching and for the recommendation! 🙂
Back when musicians actually played music.
Barnsey will always give me chills.
Yes
ian moss the voice of regret, jimmy the voice of pain. Best description of their voices ive heard
Agreed.
😊one of Australia's greatest bands!!!!!!
🙂
A lot of the younger audience, singing this song, weren't born when this first came out in 1982. The lead guitarist is Ian Moss, and lead vocalist is Jimmy Barnes. This was a special reunion of Cold Chisel. Both Ian Moss and Jimmy Barnes have successful solo careers.
I did not realize that. Thank you for sharing your insight. I appreciate it 👍
The rabbit hole which is Cold Chisel is endless and phenomenal
Best band in the world, imo
I will have to listen to more of their songs
I’ve been going down the rabbit hole of Cold Chisel since the summer and they have quickly become one of my favorites. There first five albums are absolutely great. All killer no filler. Amazing musicians and songwriters that should have been huge worldwide. I’m just thankful to have discovered them 🙏🎸
Jimmy Barnes is a Goddamn National Treasure. Never heard this acoustic version before. Thank you, Army Vet.
It’s a great version. Thanks for watching!
Another great Australian artist John Farnham does his own version of this song with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
I will check that out. Thanks 🙂
check out John Farnham doing this song live. I think it's better than cold chisels version
cold chisel has been around since the 70's,so yes many Australian families know this song and this band, yes it is multi generational
I will have to listen to more of their music
The guitarist, Ian Moss, is often seen around where I live on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. He’s a nice unassuming bloke ❤️
It’s nice when celebrities are down to earth and are actually kind and good people. 🙂💙
Do yourself a favour and take a trip down the Cold Chisel rabbit hole. They were epic, iconic and completely beloved here in Australia from the 70s right up to today. Jimmy's voice and presence were incredible, matched by Ian Moss' insane talent on the guitar and smooth beautiful vocals. It's fantastic to see so many people discovering them through You Tube. 🤘🤘💜💜💥💥 They were the sound of our youth (Gen Xer here) along with early AC/DC. Lucky us
Will do!! Thank you 😄😄
Many of Chisels songs are indeed about returned veterans etc. But the interpretation is how anyone sees it to apply to their own lives. I agree it's about the returning of a Veteran facing 'normality' in society. My partner lives with PTS I empathize. Thank you for your service.
Thank you for your insight and thank you for your support!
Lol, I am old enough to remember when they were just a "pub" band we used to see on a Friday night.. Along with AC/DC..
God i love Aussie folk music. That being said, one "vet" to another, the best Australian ever song about war was written by a bloke
named Eric Bogle. It is about broken young men returning from the "great war". It IS haunting and very powerful. Perhaps
the best "war song" ever written. Highly recommend a listen if you liked this. It is called "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda".
I will check it out, thank you!!! 🙂
@@JustAnotherArmyVet Anytime mate.
Agree. As is "No Mans Land (Green Fields Of France)" by Eric Bogle. "Only Nineteen" by Redgum, pretty damn good also.
A song for all served anywhere in the world and for any country
Great song!
You should check out the official lyric video to Khe Sanh by this band it's completely about a returning Vietnam Vet it's a classic song. nice reaction :)
I will, thank you!!
100% it's a solid vet experience song, and an unofficial anthem of Australia.
@@jeremykothe2847 this is a big song in Australia?
@@JustAnotherArmyVet Khe Sanh is an anthem to aussies yea, Cold Chisel in general were pretty much on par in popularity with INXS & AC/DC in Australia.
@@absinthedream9668 🙂
Failed relationship.BUT it can also be what you said.I’ve thought both ways about this song for years
I think you are right 🙂👍
I think you should react to "the band played waltzing Matilda" by Eric Vogel and "I was only nineteen" by Redgum, I'm sure you would enjoy them both, the 1st is about world war 1, the second about Vietnam, both very moving songs which I am sure you would identify with
Eric Bogle - just one of the greatest song writers ever -
Ah yes!! Somebody else has suggested that as well. Thanks 👍
Hey mate. You're not "just another" anything. But the part of you that comes from your service can never be taken from you. Cold Chisel is perhaps the most iconic Australia band of all time. Especially in that they rejected the American deals on offer and are essentially beloved in Australia for speaking volumes on behalf of the common Aussies. There's a hell of a lot of their tunes that bring me to tears simply through memories of my youth.
Thanks for your support…And so think it is important for every country to look out for its own interests and its own people. So, respect to 🇦🇺
This song is one of our faves in Australia
Great song!
a more emotional song about a vet returning from war by the cold Chisel is Khe Sanh🎉
I will check it out, thank you!!!
Child Chisel is a national treasure down here. Do yourself a favour and have a listen to some fantastic rock and roll by this band. Cold Chisels Greatest Hits. Fantastic music. Cheers, dd

I’ve always thought it was about a man coming home from war hoping to rekindle a relationship but carrying the baggage of war and knowing it will stay with him and affect his dreams.
I can believe that. Well said 👍
Cold Chisel's song Khe San is an amazing song about to Vietnam vet trying to live in the real world when he returns

The "war" in this song is that between two lovers.

That’s always good when I’m music band can reach different generations. 🙂
Jimmy Barnes is my favourite singer ❤ 2:17 is him ❤ it's his Birthday tomorrow 28th April. Happy Birthday 🎉🎉 He is this band's lead singer.
The guitarist and singer with the black shirt on is Ian Moss. He has a few songs that he takes the lead on, this being one of them.
Together their harmonies are fantastic.
The rest of the band includes Phil Small on bass, Don Walker on keys and Steve Prestwich RIP (in 2016) on maracas (usually their drummer).
Cold Chisel are my favourite band.
I will have to watch more of their videos 🙂👍💙
@@JustAnotherArmyVet They do have plenty in their catalogue. They began in 1973… Jimmy was 16 and a half. Their first album was not until 1978 ( it is self titled as Cold Chisel). Khe Sanh is another one from that era. Although it is again about a Vietnam Vet, it is not entirely accurate, but still talks about trying to assimilate back into society afterwards. Here is a link to the song czcams.com/video/BNA4ELdkYCo/video.html Jimmy takes lead on this one.
The band broke up in 1983, with an album released in 1984 called Twentieth Century. That is also the year that Jimmy started his solo career. He has been very successful.
Ian Moss also had a few hits of his own.
The band has reformed and put out music after 1983, reforming quite a few times. They have newer albums in 1998 The Last Wave of Summer, 2003 of the live version of their 2003 concert Ringside, 2012 No Plans, 2013/2014/2016/2017/2020 live tapes, 2015 The Perfect Crime, 2019 Blood Moon.

This was their reunion tour after about 20 years apart.
For the complete opposite try their live cover of Wild Thing from their 1983 break up tour titled The Last Stand.......an Australia wide tour that utilised all types of venues to say goodbye to their loyal fans.
Also the most feral rock performance ever......lol

The best song about what war can do to a soldier retuning home from war is The band played waltzing matilda by Eric Bogal . its about retuning from gallipoli

I would also say " I was only 19" by redgum. It's heartbreaking to listen to.
Jimmy Barnes is such a gift ❤

About vietnam vets dealing with returning to civilian life, apart from there families. There was no support for them, glad you survived and made it home.
Very true and very sad. Thanks for your kind words !
One of the best by Chisels, fantastic performance and great reaction!
Thank you very much! Great song!
Bow River from this same concert is played and sung phenomenally. It highlights how well they play and how comfortable they are with each other. Who can go past a harmonica as a lead instrument. Look it up, you will love it.
Thanks!! I will check it out 🙂
Interpretation of any song is how it makes you feel and that is indeed individualistic.
Well said 👍
Good reaction. The story consistently told by the band about this song was that the drummer (Steve Prestwich) was inspired by a mate of his who was a vet. I suspect a lot of the confusion is that it doesn't have the overt lyrics like 'Khe Sanh' (also by them). But, as you said, like all good songs, the listener gets to interpret the song by their own heart.
This is a good song by Cold Chisel partly because it shows off both of their main singers. Ian Moss (the one playing the guitar) and Jimmy Barnes (the screamer) both have their own independent careers.
Thank you kindly!! I appreciate you sharing your thoughts 👍

@JustAnotherArmyVet and cold chisels first song for 1978 Khe Sanh is about a Vietnam vet trying to return to normal life
@@peterdubois65 a ton of people have recommended that song 👍
The song was actually written about a breakup of a couple it was written by the Drummer Steve Prestwich.
thank you for your insight!!
@@JustAnotherArmyVet He is completely correct, the song was written by the drummer Steve Prestwich after the break up with his wife. Steve who is playing a 'shaker' in this vid passed away not long after this concert and the band still perform the song in tribute to him whenever they play. The song can of course be interpreted in many ways by anyone suffering grief and loss that pulls at their heart and head, which can include return from war. Speaking of which their return from war war song 'Khe Sanh' is well worth a listen!
@@davepetrusma5517 thank you so much for taking the time to type that. Well said. And I will go ahead and check out that song. 🙂
I can see both points of view and believe the song is able to encompass both in the one story of a soldier returning to try and pick up the traces of a relationship, stalled by war, determined not to lose strength of heart due to battling PTSD. PTSD caused by the memories of the horrors of war and the loss of loyal soldier mates.
Also wanting to stand by his surviving soldier mate who shares the same story of struggles and using each other's shoulder for release of emotions.
Simultaneously sharing a war torn love story with his lover and using each other's shoulder for release of emotions whenever having been home on leave.
Now both he and his soldier mate are trying to hold onto their mental capacities to live the normal civilian life traces they hsd planned before they
werw wanted and coscripted into a war they had to go and fight orelse they'd be ' Wanted ' men for jailing as concientious objectors.
There were many who thought they should not be forced to fight in someonelse's war which had no rhyme nor reason to it and also looked impossible to win such a tiny political region backed onto by the whole of massive China.
Also when teenage boys turned into 19 year olds their names were put into a lottery to be drawn randomly to be ripped from their families and go straight from virtual childhood, drafted into the war machine.
There is a very famous song about Aussie soldiers ifighting during the Vietnamese War which has been very popular on Reaction channels.
" I Was Only Nineteen ' by Redgum

If you want to understand Australians and life in this country, just listen to Cold Chisel.
Thanks for your insight and recommendation. I will have to do that. 👍
Well said, I'll add The Seekers.
Best band ever.. most Australians think cold chisel are even better than fellow Aussie bands AC/DC and INXS (two great bands) cold chisel have two singers Jimmy barnes and Ian moss (guitarist). Jimmy barnes is also a solo singer and along with John Farnham another great singer are thought of as two Australian legends..
cold chisel do a great cover of “wild thing” plus there other songs include flame trees, khe sahn (about veteran returning home from war), bow river, cheap wine, Saturday night, you’ve got nothing I want
Jimmy barnes solo songs include working class man and his duet with John Farnham, when something is wrong with my baby
John Farnham sings great cover of “help” and
AC/DC song “it’s a long way to the top”. His own. Songs include “your the voice”, pressure down, burn for you, playing to win..
Jimmy barnes and John Farnham are thought by many reactors to have two of the best voices they have ever heard..
Awesome! Is Cold Chisel huge in Australia? I will have to check out those other songs. And I had no idea AC/DC was Australian!
@@JustAnotherArmyVet lol heaps of people don’t know that AC/DC are australian. They are superstars in our country. They were formed in 1973 by brothers malcom and angus young with their first lead singer being the legendary Bon Scott who died in 1979 and was then replaced with Brian Johnson. Cold Chisel are deadset legends in Australia 🇦🇺 so much so that they are thought of by many as the best Australian band ahead of even AC/DC and INXS. But John Farnham is definitely thought of as the best solo singer from Australia and heaps of international stars have sung with him when they have come to Australia including ray charles. And yes Cold Chisel are huge in Australia if any of their songs are played especially Khe Sahn aussies everywhere stop and sing their song.. but my favourite songs by them are cheap wine and choir girl (which is about a guy who takes a girl for an abortion and how he feels about it)

No doubt, because of the depth of the lyrics, the song is about a soldier returning home from war and trying to survive in life.
I agree. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. 🙂
Oh I have always taken it as a war related song. From the aspect of soldiers being side by side shoulder to shoulder in a way no one else who has never been in combat or deployed would no and their troubled return home. Keeping their lights on for those who have been snuffed out in their prime. But again only those who have fought the devil and came out the other side together closer than any family in those times of PTSD and related trauma. God bless you and your family 🎉🙏💕

I was around when it first came out, I can guarantee it's about the soldiers returning home and not a failed relationship. I'm not even sure sure how you came to that conclusion.
I also think it’s about Soldier returning from war. My research in where I came across the failed relationship theory (I try to research topics before I react to videos). Thanks for sharing your opinion!
The song is acutally about a relationship break up, yea it could be interperted as being something about a soldier comming back from a war but that is not it.

I second the need f lyrics watching Khe San. I’m Aussie and I know the words but in some versions I don’t understand what Jimmy is singing.

I wonder how many thousand soldiers and million more civilian deaths could have been avoided by keeping kissinger away from the war room.
Very interesting theory!! He also played a role with Nixon in the 1971 Indo Pak war was as well. They knew Pakistan was committing genocide and they sent a new carrier group to the Bengal to support the genocide and to threaten India, who was trying to stop it.
@@JustAnotherArmyVet 70s were bad times between US and India.
Kissinger is believed to have advised Bush jr. and Obama in the war against Afghanistan and Iraq.

@@2eREPPARA that title almost sounds familiar 🤔
There are two ways, no, 3 ways of looking this song. 1 is a failed relationship that one wants to repair. 2 is that it is a soldier who needs to get back to the one they love. My girl is US Army. She has always had problems with her man's jealous issues A Trust thing.
Well said. I can see that 👍
Fortunately, since Vietnam, not a lot of Aussies have had to go to war "en masse", with the continued, yet still token, contingent of support for USA actions around the world being the exception. If our Aussie politicians had "true grit" we'd be busting arse for, and in, the Ukraine... but such is not the case. Indeed this song is about domestic, personal war at home... closer to the heart of day to day matters of personal existence than it is to matters of a soldier's existence today, or not. Yet, still, it is one's own ears, and indeed heart where a song has meaning. In this you are quite correct. Cheers
Cheers! Thanks for offering your insight. I know Australia’s involvement in the Iraq war was limited. But I did serve with the Aussies in Iraq. They were a good bunch 🇦🇺🙂

I’ve read a comment on another reaction to this song by someone who knew the songwriter well. It’s about a soldier returning from war. End of story.
Thank you for sharing your insight!
Sorry, is about a relationship breakup
Holy shit. No no no. This is about a love relationship. Has nothing to do with soldiers. It is about having a fight and walking out to take a break.
Thanks for your insight!
Exactly! Khe Sahn was THE song about returning from war and the repercussions. Red Gum’s “I Was Only 19” is even more powerful than Khe Sahn!
@@Cyannah117 in the next few weeks or so, I will see about reacting to one of those songs. I have heard a a lot of good things about them
Last man from Dunolly by Mike whittle about a survivor from the 59th battalion at fromelles. And gift of years by Eric bogle, written about a veteran returning to Anzac years later are a couple of great Australian songs.
Fromelles to this day is our greatest loss of life in a single day. 5553 men from 6000 engaged.
Was it in WW1?
@@JustAnotherArmyVet both were written about ww1 themes.
Gift of years was written for the 75 anniversary of the Anzac landing after he had a conversation with a ww2 digger who hadn't expected to survive it was easily adapted for the ww1 context.
With the last man from Dunolly being very specific for ww1 in France. It was our first action in 1916 for the newly formed 5th Australian division and it was smashed . 8th and 14th brigades actually took some old trenches and held them for 24 hours while 15th brigade was annihilated. The 59th and 60th battalions were shot down in a matter of minutes to less than 100 men each they had both started with over 1000.
Basically talks about him being the last man alive from all those in his little town who enlisted.
250 of these men were found and identified only in 2010 after research from a Australian amateur historian helped locate mass grave many had been buried in by the Germans after the battle.
@@matthewcharles5867 there are still missing soldiers from the battle??
@@JustAnotherArmyVet from ww1 alone Australia has 14, 000 missing soldiers. 4000 are commemorated at lone pine in Gallipoli and 10,000 in Villiers Bretonx in France. With about another 15,000 missing from ww2 in Europe, North Africa and the pacific theatres.
Like the British and French in ww1 we lost the greater part of a entire generation in France.
