Smooth as silk, just a query oil to overhead?
Thanks, yes just took a while for the oil to work it's way. Here's an update video on the engine. Project is on the back burner while I finish the Diamond T 4-53T project.czcams.com/video/6jXozQ9Ytb8/video.html
Great video, just curious how does it compare In terms of fuel mileage to a Cummins?
I'm getting 18-20 mpg hwy @9200 lbs. My first gen Cummins @ 7000 lbs got 19-21 mpg.
Looking forward to seeing the sheetmetal filling that 19" section. Thanks for documenting this! Awesome concept.
You're welcome.:) Thanks for watching.:)
Progress! Love it!
Exciting build!
Really enjoy seeing this come together. Thanks for taking us along with you.
Beautiful bike ❤ , You need straight exhaust, Arapovic or other ... 👍
Thanks, that would be pretty nice.:)
In the US this engine will not pass emissions, it could be declared "out of Service"
That depends on the state you live in.:)
Thanks
Er hört sich wunderbar an....wie eine Synphonie
This is perfect for my F-150
Yes, would be just the about perfect. It's in my 2009 F350 now and running great.:)
Whats the weight of the 6v71 vs the 6v53
6V71 is 2000 lbs and the 6V53 is 1500 lbs.
'Screamin JImmy"
Where is this???
West Coast region of BC, Canada.
What did this conversion cost $25000???
The total cast was $4000 USD including the rebuild of the engine. Sold the 6.4 for $2000 USD and made all the parts in house for the swap. No labor costs as I did all the work.
Thats not much of a motor.
It's a small engine, but 240HP and 525 FTLBS of torque is enough to get the jab done.:)
Nice job!!!!!
Thanks.:)
What kind of mpgs are you getting?
18-20 hwy, 15-16 city and 11-13 towing. I burn veg oil in this and it's pretty much free to drive. I use 5 gallons of diesel every 3000 miles, the rest is veg oil.:)
Granproyecto
Obrigado
Looking good!!!
Is using a full can of quick start bad for a detroit engine? I heard it's really bad. I am getting my 3-53 going amd they r trying to make it run with an electric pump before the regular govenor ? Not sure but I think they are going about things wrong.
Yes, no need to use ether if the fuel system is primed. No need for an electric pump, the engine driven pump is better suited for the Detroit 3-53. It uses fuel at 60 gallons an hour to cool the injectors. Adding an electric fuel pump before the engine driven pump will slow down the fuel flow.
@@detroitgarage9430 thankyou have a good one..
Another Detroit?
No, at the moment it’s got the Ford Lima 2.3, but planning an OM617 swap in the future.
You have a very cool build,
Thanks.:)
Getting caught up on your videos here. Great project there. Nice metal work there. The Ford frame sure worked out for you. Fits like a glove.
Thanks, having lots of fun.:) Looking forward to hanging the skin back on.:)
Lots of progress!!!! Thanks!
Very nice! you need a bigger shop lol, I look forward to seeing the project come together!
Thanks.:)
This is a completely SICK build...... I'd do a 1000 miles road trip with you in that car!
Thanks, just finished up a 1400 mile road trip a couple weeks ago.:)
I really hope you put that 6v in your excursion, and thanks for the video, I love this channel, keep it up man
Thanks.:)
Is there a distinct visual aide to look for on a listing or for sale posting to tell if a 453 has jake brakes ? I know pulling the valve cover but is there any thing to look for in photos? As always awesome truck awesome !!!!
Yes the valve cover is 2” taller. Some have tall valve covers and some have a 2” riser under the standard valve cover. They’re becoming very rare.
@@detroitgarage9430 thank you for the fast response🙏
@@oldironsfury You're welcome.:)

Jimmy music!
That's freaking wild and sounds so good!!!
I remember in 2002 a new Ford pickup with an engine brake on I-5 in the rain lost control because at 70 mph dude had to try them out empty.😂
2 Stroke diesel's with jakes just sounds brutal. Especially the dirty dozen with jakes.
do jake brakes reduce engine life?
No, that's a common myth.:)
Nope, they turn a power producing engine, into an energy absorbing compressor. One of the best add-ons a trucker had back in the day to help slow down AND help reduce brake overheating and wear.
Superdutys have had factory engine brakes since 2003.
Yes, but not Jacobs brakes.:)
Most pickups use the variable geometry mechanism in the turbo to create exhaust backpressure instead of modifying the valve timing like a "true" jake brake. That's why they just make a whooshing noise instead of the clatter you hear in this video or from big trucks.
@@seabrookmx I've driven big trucks with turbine brakes, they work better than Jake's and are way cheaper.
Such a great sound 👌🏻 thank you 👍🏻 😊
Thank you too!
Freaking awesome!!!
Thanks.:)
What is that red bike in your bed going to be used for?
I used the hand brake as a backup fuel shut off for the 4-53T and I pulled the rims off for spares. The frame went to the metal recycler.:)
Nice touch, as you do things fairly correctly which is why i watch you should get the brake lights to activate when the jake solenoids are energised.
True, this causes a lot of confusion from drivers behind me when the truck slows without brake lights.:) I haven't been rear-ended yet, so all is good.:)
Just a random idea I had recently. There is a polish company who makes transmission controllers for the ZF 8hp transmission should be able to drive a mechanical engine with only a brake pedal input, throttle position sensor and a maf sensor. That might be something for you to look into as an upgrade. The transmissions are often very cheap, especially when not taken from a bmw and the TCU is around 1500 USD. The company is called Turbolamik
An 8V-92 jake, was like a whisper compared to an NTC-400 Cummins, even a 3406B Cat was no match for the Cummins, especially a KTA-1150 Cummins. nothing against Detroits, I love 'em myself, but taking the rack out of fuel while coasting gives better braking back pressure than slightly popping the valves open to dump compression...when jake is activated, injectors continue squirting fuel, giving you an after burn at the turbo where the exhaust temp is 900 degrees or greater. (like a diesel fired steam cleaner)... However, I love all the Craftsmanship you do...👍
These Jakes work very well, (not as good as the Cummins) but never really have to use the brakes.:) Rack is idle fuel while the Jakes are active.:) Egts with the Jakes active is 355 degrees.:)
The injectors don’t normally keep injecting fuel, the Jakes are normally activated by a microswitch when the rack is in the zero fuel position. I have seen what you describe when a Jake unit had a slightly sticky solenoid, but it doesn’t happen in normal operation.
@@PeterGort Yes, the buffer switch controls the Jakes and can only be used when your foot is off the fuel.:)
@@PeterGort buffer screw and idle screw limits rack travel to "idle fuel on"... only the shut off lever geometry takes rack out of fuel completely... flyweight force at high RPM takes rack towards no fuel when throttle is released and buffer/idle spring tension/adjustment, holds it at 500/600 idle RPM fuel on even when Jake is activated. the shut off solenoid would have to be de-energized by the Jake switch to shut full off completely and stop raw fuel flowing through the turbo "furnace"... look at the puff of smoke out the tail pipe at the beginning of video when Jake was on, that's the "after burn" at the turbo... those Jimmys can shoot a 3' glow/flame out the stack pulling 80k uphill under full load and EGT over 1k degrees on the pyro.
It still amazes me as to how much that 4-53T sounds like an 8V92 that powered the M1076 PLS trucks that my old Army unit had. Even with the Jakes engaged, the sound is strikingly similar. Great work sir!! Love your innovation!
Thanks.:)
Pure music for my ears. 👌🏻🗿 Thanks a lot!!! 👏🏻🗿

If it wasn't for people like you no one would ever know, thanks for all your hard work and ingenuity for all the future swapping of diesel engines, awesome 👏 😀
Thanks.:)
Back in the day I drove a 1955 GMC truck with the beautiful Detroit. I could pull the California “Grape Vine” before they called it the interstate 5. With a80 thousand pound load of fertilizer heading to LA pulling the grade in 3rd under. I loved that old truck. It had the Standard Oil colors with polished Aluminum wheels and twin stacks. Even the fuel tanks were polished out. All that beautiful red and white ,blue colors. Back then ya had to keep your rig up and clean. It was a looker and a lot of the guys who drove Reos, KWs, or Pete’s and even the old Internationals ,Frieghts loved the truck. . Even Ford had their Big Jobs . Wish I could have the opportunity to stick a Detroit in my Ford excursion. That would be my dream for this old guy. Thanks for your channel. Love the big Jimmy Detroits it’s the best sound and fair to operate.
Was that by chance a 950? Sweet rigs and there's a huge following today, they call them Fat Cabs.:) 6-71, 8V71 and some swapped in 8V92T's.:)
Q: is the 4-53 a CCW rotation?
No, it's clockwise viewed from the front.:) They can be either rotation, but over the road are clock wise.:)
