    Yes, you may have to cut into the firewall to get everything to fit. I really think the two radiators with electric fans will be better for this project, since you do want to use it for many different purposes.

    The deal with the pickup tube screen was when the guys that worked on Detroits with tin pans and used them for engine stands the pickup screen would suck itself to the oil pan and low or no oil pressure so they cut notches in the screen so it wasn't a problem except in a skidder that runs on steep ground and it runs out of oil sooner and causes more problems like bad cam followers and dropped valves

      Thanks Joe, that would explain the worn out cam followers and dropped valves.:)

    I was surprised that I had forgotten how 'bulky' these engines were.
    My vote is for you to cut the firewall and move the engine back so you can install a fan as you want and need, I think it will look and work better that way.

      I think that's the answer, not too much work to make a nice firewall that cut 2".:) This should give me the room I need.:)

    I hope I can work as hard as you when I retire... it must be that Canadian air and drinking water.
    a custom radiator core with a 6" open circle in the center for a fan hub adapter to go through and have fan in front of radiator with 2" clearance between radiator and front of engine... an idea ?... I see plenty of space behind grill for a fan with a shroud...
    I've seen remote hydraulic pumps driven by the front of engine with a drive shaft opening around a custom bottom radiator tank, hydraulic pump mounted in front of radiator.
    another idea, is to build a radiator/grill, (imagine the entire grill a cool looking radiator)

      Tanks for the ideas, I'll have a good think on this, thinking more along the firewall mod now.:)

      the firewall, back wall, and roof are structural parts of the cab...cutting the firewall, could weaken the windshield opening, any flex around the dash, will crack the windshield.
      driving a pulley/hub with a driveshaft from front of crank and under lower radiator tank, to drive a belt to an upper pulley/fan and under drive or over drive fan speed... like dump trucks/water trucks drive pumps from front of crank ; 'nother idea.

    I just found your channel and have been enjoying the videos, especially the 3-53T \ Ford project. I have a nostalgic, soft spot for 2 cycle Detroits. I worked for my dad in the late 70's and we used the 2-53, 3-53, and the inline 6-71 Detroits. If I remember correctly, most if not all of them leaked oil like it was free. Some or all were rebuilt more than once and it never took long for even a fresh motor to start marking it's territory.
    I'm not trying to be rude, but may I ask what it is about these 2 strokes that made you go with one for your daily driver? I know you mentioned in another video that it's "what you had," but the work that was involved in fabricating mounts for an engine almost nobody uses on the road, plus the fact that conversion kits are rare, seems like it would have been worth the effort to find something else. You most certainly had an uphill climb. Fortunately, you're skills paid off as did the extra work. The swap looks like it was done by Henry Ford himself.
    Like I said, I have a soft spot for them because of working with my dad but I can't say they ever impressed me. The noise, the leaking, slobbering - we never let them idle, and the power to weight ratio made them okay for pumps and generators but not so much for modern day highway use. You pulled it off but I know it was hard work.

      Thanks, Like you I also have a soft spot for Detroits. My dad owned a logging company when I was a kid, so I was exposed to the music of Jimmy's in the bush. He had a Hayes HDX with a 12V71 and two skidders with 4-53's in them. In 2009 I bought the 4-53T that's in my truck for a different project with my dad. He unfortunately fell ill and I had to put the project on hold until I moved back to Canada. The 4-53T sat on ice until 2019 when I decided to use it for my F350. It was certainly a challenge to make all the pieces, but I enjoy that sort of thing.:) I could have used a Cummins, but had many years running a first gen, so I decided the Detroit would be fun. I've got it dialed in now and runs really nice.:) I'll be building another one for the Diamond T, so another fun project.:)

    You can get really strong Flexalite dual fan setups that would have no problem keeping that engine temperature in control. Besides the diesel isn't nearly as hot as a big gas engine would be and those fans are used all the time for gas job cooling fans. Plus you don't get the tiny bit of drag stealing all the horsepowers from that big 453 with the electric fan setup.🤔👍🏻👌🏻⚡🔌🔋💥💨⚠️🚧🚜🛢️

    • @tdotw77
      @tdotw77 Před 4 měsíci

      Plus you can make them push or pull air depending on how they're setup so you could gain more space putting fans in the front of radiator instead.

    • @tdotw77
      @tdotw77 Před 4 měsíci

      Or like you said do a remote radiator behind\under the cab. Another option is to get a cheap wheelbarrow and use the metal bottom hump to become your firewall depression. Cheap & easy to cut & make work with relatively flat firewall engine trans firewall 'tunnel'. That round shape isn't the easiest thing to create with out a lot of metal work stretching, shrinking, English wheel, rollers & a bunch of sheet metal welding. More food for thought!🤔😅😅🤷🏻‍♂️🛠️🔧🔩⛓️👍🏻👌🏻
