2 Easy Ways to Make Extreme Miter Cuts

How do you cut miters greater than 45 degrees? Most miter saws max out somewhere between 45 and 60 degrees. This is super easy, and today I show you two ways to easily achieve the seemingly impossible task of cutting extreme angles....

    Working with wood and using hobby/diy grade tools, your accuracy isn't going to matter that much, but after a bit of practice, you learn to get close enough. As a bit of perfectionist, it's not really satisfactory, but things are what they are. If you need higher accuracy, your best bet is probably a cnc machine.

    What if you need to take the thinnest sliver off a 2m length board? Something thinner than the kerf of your blade. You cant push your fence in further else you risk cutting into it. You could put a sacrifical piece of wood against the fence, but then the scale will be off.

    I personally would not pay the price. If your sponsored you have to say good things. If it's off a 32nd or 64th doesn't matter unless you have a calibrated hand and place mark with pencil perfectly. Anyone compare a Stanley tape measure or another brand to the over priced woodpecker, maybe the tape measure is off. Should compare a different of the same style to the pecker.

    Pretty basic stuff, that's what sliding t bevels are for, measuring and transferring any angle, genius?? Don't strain a muscle patting yourself on the back especially since your own after vid note makes it clear you should have cut the acute angle first, why not do it right the second time and explain what some d.i.y. mitre saw limitations are

    • @InspireWoodcraft
      @InspireWoodcraft Před 2 dny

      @paulbertles1513 My "after vid note" says nothing about cutting an acute angle first, just to be clear. They are both acute angles. One is just more acute than what the saw can handle, so we are using the first piece as a new fence to establish what the second angle will be and cutting said angle all in one go. Try not to overthink it.

    Your theory is sound BUT you are open for liability! According to CCOHS, the blade height of a table saw should be set so that it does not extend more than about 1/8 inch (3 mm) above the height of the piece being cut. In most situations, the optimal blade height is when the teeth fully clear the top of the board, so that the bottom of the gullet is just exposed above the workpiece.

    @dougk5456 Před 4 dny

    With my table saw it would be good only one time. Here's why. After putting the tape in place and raising the saw blade the slit is tight to the blade. Now I shut my saw off to do something else. Next time I make a cut I start my saw. All of my 10 inch blades distort when the saw starts. This now makes the slot wider where the saw teeth are. So now the tape is no better than my insert that is not tight to the blade because the blades distort when starting my saw.

    • @InspireWoodcraft

      @danielmackey6594 I don't know if this will help, but it's an option (czcams.com/video/ACGbbjrFSqY/video.html) Also, there are tools available for this kind of work that do the match for you. The Starrett miter protractor is pretty popular (amzn.to/3Uxe9Y0). The SawSet Pro is another really good option too (amzn.to/4d9NTKx), but you have to have/use a sliding t-bevel to use it.

    • @InspireWoodcraft
      @InspireWoodcraft Před 4 dny

      @@danielmackey6594 Oh good! The overlap method works really well for establishing the angles, and on quarter round, or other awkward profiles, I would use flat stock to establish the angle that needs to be cut, set the saw to that angle, and then cut the quarter round to that angle. But, you found an angle finder so it sounds like you’re all set!

  • @DEW-fk7ij
    @DEW-fk7ij Před 5 dny

    I have used this "trick" before. However I would suggest that you buy a bigger square. It may make a smoother edge but it needs to be square and you can depend on that if the square is larger.

    • @InspireWoodcraft
      @InspireWoodcraft Před 4 dny

      @DEW-fk7ij The only problem that I have is that decent bigger squares are really expensive. And framing squares aren't reliable and are a pain to use. In fact borderline impossible in this specific situation. A quality smaller square registered against a known straight edge of the material is still going to register square. The square's blade length can be increased by using a straightedge against it like I did here. I commonly do this with sliding t-bevels to increase their reach as well. The only time a smaller square won't work is if the edge of the material is not straight enough for the task at hand. If the reference edge has any undulations and the stock of the square (the part that registers against the edge of the material) is too short to span those undulations, it won't be very accurate to the overall edge. I do wish someone would come out with a quality larger woodworking square, similar to the Woodpeckers style squares, at a more affordable cost.
