  • One of the tools I reach for the most in my woodworking shop happens to also be the cheapest. A simple scrap of MDF with a sandpaper face can get you out of a jamb in a lot of situations.

    In a world where woodworking creators put weird music, or video edit in Hollywood movie scenes and other non sense or tell you about their lives and what not or generally take 10x too many words to say anything
    This channel is so very welcomed!

    You can do the same thing with some silicon caulk. Just butter on as level as you can, use a slotted credit card works too. Let it dry completely and it’ll stay sticky without leaving any residue and won’t hurt your sharp tools should your tool runs into it.

    My experience e is that rubber (I use backside of mouse pads) is far superior to sandpaper for any push block application like this. Better grip and lasts much longer. Also they are thicker and not dependent on a perfectly flat surface as sandpaper is...and they don't scratch laminate.

    • @jefftothealbright
      @jefftothealbright Před 2 měsíci +1

      Squishier and less accurate as a result, though.

    • @CarmoniusFinsnickeri
      @CarmoniusFinsnickeri Před 2 měsíci

      @@jefftothealbright have you tried it? I've used both adhesive attached sandpaper and mouse pad stapled to a push block and I see zero advantages with sandpaper between these two. The pad is only 2mm thick and quite close staples means it doesn't move at all.

    Also works great as a ... sanding block. :)
    I actually make smaller MDF blocks and then spray mount different grits to them. Need to sand a corner edge and keep it perfectly 90º? Use the block on edge right on the table surface and you're good to go. Great tips!

  • @BobBlarneystone
    @BobBlarneystone Před 10 měsíci +3

    When resawing for veneer on the bandsaw, glue the stock on to a piece of MDF that is a bit longer than the stock. Now you have a safe and flat backer board to place against the fence, and next to run through the planer before the next pass through the saw.

  • @Erik_The_Viking
    @Erik_The_Viking Před 10 měsíci +2

    I made a similar push block with an offcut of plywood. Put some 80-grit sandpaper on one edge, which is useful for keeping my hands above the table saw while providing some "stick" to help guide the wood through.

  • @deanaoxo
    @deanaoxo Před 10 měsíci +5

    Before I could afford diamond sharpening blocks I bought rolls of progressively higher grit adhesive backed sandpaper, which, you guessed it, eliminates using the 3m spray(which I can’t live without)! Great tip!

    I first made these some time back for use as sanding blocks, and they worked fine. Now I see I have actually got multi-use tools! 😃
    Another similar use tool I made to stop my sharpening stone from sliding is a piece of MDF with a thin layer of silicone sealant spread onto it. This works great, and I have used the technique on other items that I want to have some 'grip'... such as sawbench 'pushers'. The silicone eventually loses its grip when dust coats the surface, but a wipe with a damp cloth rejuvenates it somewhat.
    Thanks for your video. 👍

    A channel with a well deserved name: Inspire Woodcraft
    This jig is the woodworking equivalent to that magical 5-in-1 painter’s tool.
    ------------
    Remember kids to properly clear out the nozzle of that expensive but handy spray adhesive so you can get every bit out.
    Hold upside down and spray until no adhesive comes out, just the propellant. Should be 2-6 seconds. Sane for any spray paint.
    I used a case daily for adhering insulation to things.
    Paint thinner/Varsol gets it off.

    When running against the fence to square up the edge, the block needs to remain in contact with the fence through the entire cut; otherwise, the cut will taper out as the material shifts into the fence at the end of the cut.

    Jodi another great tip and video. One question about your miter station (@about 2 min marker you showed cutting a piece). Is the miter platform height offset lower than the table or is it just an illusion? I have normally seen miter stations built with the height aligned to the saw. But if you have offset it to be higher there must be some reason. Hence asking. TIA & always looking for your "Inspirational" videos.
