- In this video I'm making a round end table that is "valued" at $1300. There is no talking in this one. I've recently had a cold that has knocked my voice out of commission, so I will follow this up with a separate video that goes over the whole process, with explanations on how this $1300 price tag came to be and I'll show you guys how many times I messed up and how I fixed the mess ups.

Some folks here don't get how this is a $1300 piece of work, but it is. Most people don't realize the time involved that you invested to make the joints vanish, the insane cost of wood now, and the quality finish. I've researched woodworking businesses, and the one thing most start doing wrong is underestimating the value of their work, especially when it comes to time spent creating it - your hourly wage, in essence. Also, people will pay that for custom furniture because it's unique and not some Ikea crap.
Keep on doing what you do.

Very nice, definitely worth the asking price. People need to understand and appreciate the value of handcrafted items… we are putting sweat time efforts and lot more in them..

That banding around the table top edge is a nice touch and if I was doing it I might have lost it a bit which I rarely do.

I cannot believe you allowed the piece with that huge knot to be used. The rest of the work looks good to me. Even without the knot I don't think I can see $1300 though.

@Glen Crandall I would have preferred it not be there, but I also didn't want to cut into a whole new stick just for another four-inch piece. I don't mind the knot because I know it will almost never be seen, and those who do end up seeing it won't mind it. One, I placed it closer to the tabletop, so that the average person walking by the table won't even see it because the top keeps it out of sight. And two, the knot side of the table, which happens to be where the small blemish is in the inlay, will always go against a wall or facing away from traffic, so again, it will never be seen.
@@InspireWoodcraft I appreciate your logic. And if you ask most folks you might be right. But I am afraid I wouldn't be happy with the knot there. Personal preference.🙂🙂

That’s a nice table. Inlays are really nice. It’d be cool if the inlays were copper or like a blue epoxy or something like that but it’s still really nice.
This exact table is all over the internet for all different prices, up to $1300. It’s crazy how much people will spend on high end furniture.
Might be crazy to you and I, but it’s good for the woodworking and I’m happy people are buying local, made-in-America as opposed to the alternative.
@@Autobotsunited This creator is my husband so I’m all for supporting local woodworkers! :) It’s crazy to me because he can build us anything so spending that much on furniture just isn’t something I can imagine but I will say that anything he builds will be passed down to my great grandchildren because of the quality of the pieces. My comment may have read differently than my intention. ❤️
@@caitlin9334 no I totally get it. No matter what, if the market will allow for certain prices, then great! But honestly, by the time you buy good materials, equipment, time in labor, and then profit margin, the price is justified. My wife loves my own creations too, and yes they will last much longer!

Jeff Damon Do you mean the small voids? Like in the knots and stuff? That was a combination of thin and medium bodied CA glue (superglue).
Excellent work as always. The white washing stain (from the looks of it) subdues the inlays, which is a different kind of look. Not sure it's a $1300 table in my world - and that is not a knock on your work at all. Something is worth what people will pay. And God bless you if you have built a clientele that will pay you that kind of money.
Edit: And as someone who thinks most Makers don't charge enough, I welcome someone charging top dollar.

Nice design, love the limewash effect. What was wrong that you needed to patch the circle banding? Shame it didn't blend 100%
@John Colgan I bit off a little more than I should have when I flushed it with the router and I got a little tear-out. I do wish it would have blended better, but after having it sit in my living room for the last week now, I haven't even noticed it.
I have to wonder about expansion and contraction of the wood with changes in humidity. Seems to me that when the top expands it's going to bust up the circular inlay band in several locations. When the legs with grain parallel to the grain of the top expand, something's gotta give. Maybe the tenons will snap?c
@Jim Shipsky I’m not sure about the inlay. I’ve seen other pieces with similar inlays that have had no issues over the years, but I guess only time will tell. As for the top-to-base connection, the wide leg and the top are orientated and glued together in a way to let them expand/contract at the same rate. The narrow legs are only glued towards the center, with an unglued floating tenon on the ends that has a mortise wider than the tenon, to allow them to move in and out as they wish. The pocket on the underside of the top, that the base sits in, is routed a quarter-inch longer where those two short legs are to give them room to expand/contract. Between the pocket and the wide mortise, it will be able to move as necessary but also help keep the legs from twisting out of square. Hopefully that made sense. I will explain that in the next video as well.
First of all, I hope you feel better soon. But also how do you not get the swirl marks using the orbital sander?
Darren Jarvis Thank you. I avoid them (mostly) by slowing down how fast I'm moving the sander across the surface, by turning down the suction on the dust extractor as low as it will go (I realize this doesn't apply to everyone), and by making sure my disk doesn't have any blemishes in it, like small tears and the like. I try to not push down on the sander and just sort of rest my hand on it, that way I'm not digging into the wood too.

Always seems like things are expensive in US from France, and this piece is no exeption, would not worth that price here but if you can charge 1300 for that, why not !

Interesting build but why all the dominos for the legs.surely a large through domino would do the job.
@robert east It was part practice with the Domino, and part not being totally sure how many/what size to use. The material is 1-5/8 thick. Using traditional joinery rules of the tenon being a third the thickness of the part, I used two 8mm dominoes. If I had to make it again, I don't know that I would even use Dominoes. I think I would just house them in a half-inch groove and call it a day.
Very high quality build, but looks like it's made of plywood. :)

Wow, someone paid $1300 for that. I would feel bad if I charged someone that much for that table. But each his own.
@Zamboni According to the internet, at least ten people have paid that much for this piece and left positive reviews on their purchase. Probably minus the large knot and the inlay blemish. But still.
@@InspireWoodcraft I was not trying to criticize you or the build or what you charge. I know they say "There is always an ass for the seat". However, I personally think $1300 is a little high. Even reading the other comments, they have the same vibe.
Is using that finish on that wood and banding one of the mistakes? 🤣
You did a great job though. Hope to be at that point one day when I have space for at least a small shop

Jodee, amazing video as usual, but I'll offer a bit of constructive criticism, of course my own opinion: like I said, the video itself is amazing; well shot and edited. I know it's probably just me, or at the very least I'm in the minority, but I find it extremely tacky/cringe when I see a woodworking video with a "price" in the title. I've seen a lot of the more popular woodworkers do this and i just think it's a terrible trend.
I agree...all the bragginfg or lying needs to stop. I am sure many more agree with us.

@@InspireWoodcraft It's kind of like on amazon you see the slashed through "original" price; it feels like a shallow marketing ploy. When I see woodworkers do it in their videos it "cheapens" the process of the actual woodworking since putting the price is the title kind of gives it the focus. Again, this is all my own opinion. I just watch woodworking videos for the woodworking aspect.
@NW Interesting. If I had to guess, some do it for the "wow" factor. Thinking someone will be scrolling by and see an unbelievable number and click on their video. ("Making a _____ from a $5,000 piece of wood!") When I think about it more, I think you are right for this video. The price is very relevant to the build, but I couldn't convey why because I couldn't talk. That's what I get for uploading without being able to think completely straight. Ha!
@@InspireWoodcraft I personally feel what you charge the client should be private between you and the client. I am not a fan of YT'ers posting what they are charging or how much they sold it for. We watch to learn new designs, craftsmanship, what not to do, etc. Not how much $$$ a item cost. Just my personal opinion. I stopped watch Blacktail Studio just for that reason.
