"The History of Stand-Up: From Mark Twain to Dave Chappelle chronicles the evolution of this American art form - from its earliest pre-vaudeville practitioners like Artemus Ward and Mark Twain to present-day comedians of HBO and Netflix. Drawing on his acclaimed History of Stand-up podcast and popular university lectures, veteran comedian and adjunct USC professor Wayne Federman guides us on this fascinating journey. The story has a connective tissue - humans standing on stage, alone, trying to get laughs. That experience connects all stand-ups through time, whether it’s at the Palace, the Copacabana, the Apollo, Mister Kelly’s, the hungry i, Grossinger’s, the Comedy Cellar, the Improv, the Comedy Store, Madison Square Garden, UCB, or at an open mic in a backyard."
Wayne Federman is an Emmy-nominated stand-up, actor, author, professor, and podcaster. He co-hosts the acclaimed podcast The History of Stand-Up. Wayne has been a touring comedian for over 35 years and has appeared on The Tonight Show as well as his own special on Comedy Central. Wayne co-produced the Emmy-winning documentary The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling and is currently co-producing a George Carlin documentary for HBO. Wayne has acted in numerous films and TV shows including Legally Blonde, Knocked Up, Step Brothers, The 40‐Year‐Old Virgin, 50 First Dates, Funny People, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Silicon Valley, Shameless, The Larry Sanders Show, Community, and The X-Files. Wayne co-wrote the sports bestseller MARAVICH The Authorized biography of Pistol Pete. (“The definitive biography of Pete Maravich” ESPN). And in his spare time, Wayne is an adjunct professor of stand-up history and performance at USC.

Why Steve Martin Quit Stand Up Comedy

Steve Martin was one of the most successful stand up comedians in the history of comedy. At the peak of his career, in the late 70s and early 80s, he was one of the best-selling concert comic in history, his first albums sold over five million copies, and he was casually selling out arenas. And then he walked away. Let's talk about why. I can't recommend Steve Martin's book Born Standing Up hig...

Rodney Dangerfield! Other comedians might have pushed the form more, other comedians might've been more inventive or more nuanced, but there's nobody alive or dead that's better at straight up old school stand up comedy. Come with me on a little walk past some favorite comedy clubs through a rainy New York morning. I talk a lot on this channel about the reasons why people usually turn to comedy. I'm not eager to distract myself or to work through things or even to...

I first became aware of Dimitri Martin when he used to appear on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He would just have a segment, and he was always funny. And so I was very excited when I saw that he had a standup special, which I believe was probably also on Comedy Central. I seen a few of his specials. I think we have similar minds. Puzzle solver. I also am fascinated with words and anagrams, and rearranging the letters in signs. Unfortunately, as I’ve only gotten into stand-up comedy recently, writing for five years, but not doing an open mic until last November, I have to check to make sure I’m not duplicating any of his bits. Even though there is such a thing as parallel thinking. The audience thinks you’re stealing a bit, you just can’t do it pretty much. it’s hard to fight group perception, even if it’s incorrect. Currently, my stand-up comedy is very different than what Dimitri does. Really enjoying your videos. Thank you.

Of course, I have a lot of respect and admiration for Steve Martin. Brilliant comic, writer, actor, and a virtuoso banjo player. Inspired by Steve Martin, I have tried to always have a little bit of goofiness in my five minute stand-up sets. I’m still in the novice stage, only five months in at Open Mics, but my Comedy is still more traditional in structure than what Steve Martin does/did. I don’t think I could do what he does, in terms of his structure, which almost seems like lack of structure. He is a singular talent. I appreciate this video. Thank you.
