    Fantastic video as always!
While I agree that dismissing Cook like a forgettable trend is a poor argument, I do think that his relationship to the internet might have played some part in the backlash. I was a Dane Cook fan before I even knew that comedy albums existed simply because of youtube clips. The real question is, what kind of comedian would he be if we saw him getting popular nowadays? Would the internet landscape make him a subtler comedian?
Regardless of what-ifs, you definitely nailed it, he's a far more complex guy than anyone seems to talk about. I was pretty shocked, but happy, when I first heard his self aware bits. Like you, I wonder what's next for him.
And of course, you tease with Dice. God, where will that one even go?
    Can't wait!

Content-wise, top notch. This was a very interesting and nuanced take on the topic. I think there are a few relatively simple things you could do to improve the video and audio quality if you’re interested.

@@KatieMears If you have a decent budget, take yourself to B&H near Penn Station. It's like Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory for A/V equipment.
But I presume you're working on a small budget. So, here are two cheap things you can do.
      1. Kill the overhead lights in that WeWork conference room. Get yourself two or three goose-neck desk lamps. Put the brightest bulbs you can find in them, and cover the front of the shrouds with a piece of white cloth to soften the light. In my little home studio, I had little squares of white cloth and earth magnets that I would use to hold the cloth on the shrouds, but you can make this work in a number of ways. Larger pieces of cloth and elastic bands will work. You could probably even do it with pillow cases.
Try to position the lights so that they point down from the front of you at a roughly 45 degree angle. You probably won't be able to pull this off, but the closer you can get to this angle, the better. Depending on what kind of protrusions you have in that conference room, some constructions lights (like $5 at Home Depot) could be a better idea.
      2. Make some acoustic tiles. This isn't as hard or expensive as it sounds, though you may need to book some time in a maker space to make it happen. Here's a video that I thought was a decent walkthrough: czcams.com/video/pABvTWSxOes/video.html. The more of these you have, the better. If you are artistically inclined or know someone who is, you can have them do a logo or something for you on a panel that would sit right behind you on that couch. I would also position one direction behind the camera, and two off to the sides.
If you have a small amount of budget, I would suggest investing in audio equipment first. Given your constraints, a decent lavalier microphone might be a good idea. You could also go with a shotgun mic or -- if you don't mind it appearing on camera with you -- a normal stage mic.
Alright, that was probably too much a brain dump. Good luck, and keep up the good work!

    • @MattMCasey-ub4fs
      @MattMCasey-ub4fs Před 5 lety

Katie Mears You can probably make a meaningful upgrade in audio/video quality without removing the camera from the building. I don't know which WeWork you're in, but CNN has come in and done on-camera interviews in the conference rooms in my WeWork. Another thing that might be helpful is setting up your phone as a second camera from a different angle. If you're editing in Final Cut Pro X, there's an option to automatically sync several cameras by using their audio. Doing so will let you add a little more visual interest and also let you mask your jump-cuts a bit.

Thanks for the vid! I'm not sure about an apology, since any sense of forgiveness for collective wrongdoing might not be achieved by a communal apology, but internally found within Dane himself. I do think he deserves the laughs and success that he's worked so hard to cultivate. He deserves to have his comedy taken as it is, sometimes brilliant, sometimes formulaic. He deserves to be recognized as one of the people who worked incredibly hard and gambled his legacy for one simple thing - To bring comedy to the people. To make people laugh. Is there ego to that? Sure. Is there a formula that develops out of success, because success is mostly a repetition of successful actions? Sure. Anyone who harbors feelings of actual anger or hate could simply be angered by their own lack of motivation and/or natural talent to accomplish what Dane has accomplished. In my view, this world has more joy in it because of Dane Cook. Cheers - Ty

Very true! He has a great delivery style; rapid fire and energetic. Because he is not Steven Wright (an amazing comedian) does not mean that he is substandard.
With great respect, it can be difficult to hear certain words because of the room tone in your videos. Anything that absorbs those sound waves would help your audio a lot.

It's so strange, I remember hearing Dane Cook senior year of high school (I think it was a rip before release, considering the wiki says July 2003) and I enjoyed both his first CDs a lot. But I was offline for most of 2004 through 2008 and I completely missed the sudden hate train on Dane Cook. It was really weird to find out about it way later.

I worked at the Hollywood Improv from 2008-2010 and saw nearly every great comic you could think of. Dane Cook was BY FAR the best show I ever witnessed. He absolutely tore the room a new a**hole for an hour and a half. People were genuinely holding their stomachs from laughing so hard. Dane in an amphitheater vs Dane in a small 220-seat room are completely different animals.
I see how he got his poor reputation of "low-brow" or "easy" comedy simply based on the fact that millions have seen his big shows, while only thousands have seen his small shows. The difference is stark, and it's a shame he doesn't have more footage out there of his crowd work and his more intimate settings. I think a whole lot of people would come around and realize just how damned good he can be.

On Larry Wilde's interview CD with Woody Allen, he asked Allen 'how do you know if something is funny?' Allen said, "If people laugh, it's funny. If they don't laugh, it's not funny." High brow or low brow, smart intellectual humor, or silly stupid potty humor, if it makes people laugh' it's funny.

I did grow out of enjoying Dane Cook's comedy and it hasn't really changed. I'd like to say that it was never to do with it being a trend to hate on him, but it probably contributed. Looking back though, I think the reason it doesn't work for me today is that most of his bits had less of a punchline and were more comedic simply because he said things loudly or energetically or with a very heavy emphasis. There's no such thing as "bad comedy"; it's too subjective for that to be the case. But for me, he still doesn't quite hit the right notes.

What bugs me is that the internet started hating him for stealing a joke from Louis CK. A joke that wasn't funny, no matter who told it. From the same Louis CK that the internet started hating on because he got permission to please himself in front of some women and the world found out. I don't think the internet is a big reason he got popular, I think it was his energy and the way he put his whole body in the jokes. Take a comedian like Mark Normand for instance. He's funny sure, however I can't watch an hour or more of a comedian barely moving as he nonchalantly tells jokes..... I'm not 80 years old. The internet latched onto hating him because it was a trend. Just like, as you said, Nickleback..... who I also like.....😅😅😅

I knew his records word for word and it still made me laugh every single time. I had SuFi's on my Myspace page and shared him with my girlfriends. It's fair to say I considered myself a fan. Facts. I can't let it go because he didn't steal from Heavyweight CK (from a success standpoint), he stole from on the rise CK while Cook was clearly the bigger deal at the time. He knew most of his fans weren't listening to CK then and tried to take advantage of that. Same way Mencia knew his typical listeners weren't watching reruns of old Cosby specials.

    • @wvu05
