  • Digging into a joke from the beautiful, complicated mind of Maria Bamford. She's incredible, and this video is made with heaps of respect for the work she does.

I met Maria recently at a show I was producing and got the chance to talk to her for a few hours, I can attest that she is honestly the nicest human being on the planet, period.
Life has been shall we say interesting to her, and it can show in her mannerisms and presence, but Maria is exactly what someone would imagine she would be in person. She is gracious, generous, and just an all around saint. Not to mention, she is a fantastic comedy writer and I wish I had the level of, as the video narrator said, "commitment" that she uses to tell the type of jokes that she does on stage.

I feel like Bamford is easily one of the most innovative and original voices currently in standup (and in comedy in general) and I hope she continues to get the recognition she is due for her achievements as not only a woman in comedy, but also in advancing the art as a whole in terms of pushing the outer limits of truth and vulnerability in comedy (to say nothing of course of her comedic chops as a writer and performer, which are every bit as honed as any other seasoned comedian).
Personally I'd love to see a future video on Kurt Braunohler. Also, thinking along the lines of his work with Kristen Schall, I thought that you might consider exploring more generally the long tradition of onstage comedy duos as an extension of the approaches you outlined in another video.

Great video -- love the formal breakdown of the joke, and the wisdom behind the analysis.

Cool video :) Maria Bamford is one of the few comedians I find myself listening to over and over and over, particularly the album this bit is from. Always something new and small to unpack from her stuff

Wow! This is an excellent video. I'm a big fan of Maria B and feel she is one of the most authentic, wonderful and super smart peeps I've seen. And your analysis is really en pointe in my opinion. Thank you and keep up the great work!

I cannot believe I found this video, I love Maria and I love how you analysed her work. She is great and is inspiring me to write my own material.

The sample joke is also structurally similar to a poem. Three stand-alone stanzas of roughly equal length on a common theme that link back to eachother.

There are a lot of similarities actually, particularly with modern spoken-word poetry, both of them being a form of pre-written spoken performance. One of the earliest examples is "To Is A Preposition; Come Is A Verb" by Lenny Bruce, mixing stand up with Beat poetry. Emo Philips also has a distinctly and intentionally rhythmic cadence when in character. His delivery is quite similar to the more stereotypical version of a Slam Poet. Going a bit older, Mitch Headberg had a set rhythm to his punch-lines that neared iambic pentameter. This is particularly clear in his bit about how he doesn't buy double-bagged Pepperidge Farm bread "because I don't need another step between me and toast."
I am actually journalist too and really understand what you mean about analysis.

Maria Bamford has long been a favorite of mine. Unmatched perspective, style, and energy. I'm so happy you covered her in a video. I wonder how a similar video covering Mike Birbiglia might go? He rides that line between stand up and comedic one man show.
    Fantastic video as always Katie!

birbiglia sounds like he threw up in his mouth and he's holding it in the back of his throat because he can't swallow and it would be rude to spit it out onstage.

She is such a strong person/performer with tremendous insight, I say this based on the body of her work over the long haul, cathartic for us and her and of great impact for all involved ushering us into a vital (reality based) frontier in comedy
