  • Let's talk about Aziz's 2019 Netflix Special.
The reviews seem pretty split, but the phrase I saw again and again was "missed opportunity." What exactly was that opportunity and how did the special fall short?

I really like Master of None, but I've never been a big fan of Aziz's Stand Up. I went in to his Netflix special mostly out of curiosity, and without expectations. But I actually really liked the way he addressed the elephant in the room. He didn't try to joke about it; neither playing it down nor up. He slowed down and earnestly shared how the whole thing felt, and he was apologetic about it. I don't know if the experience made him mature as a comedian, but I ended up enjoying the comedy aspect of the special as well. I wouldn't say Aziz has gained a new fan, but I definitely don't think ill of him, and I too am looking forward to seeing what he does next.

Such a great review! I didn't feel you had an axe to grind (at least, on camera).

How could you make this video and not compare the entire special or message to the writing in Master of None. This is a true injustice to analytical comedy.

Hey Katie let me ask you something, did you notice Aziz doing a little bit of a Dave Chappelle vocal inflection and joke cadence? Liked the special still just wondering about your thoughts on that?

He definitely studied Chapelle's way of transitioning to a heartfelt and earnest point instead of a joke.

A lot to unpack and no easy answers. Personally I'm most interested in how this will look five years from now. We're seeing the PR playbook for handling these scandals being written in real time. Curious who will stick around and why.
    Great video as always.

The original letter itself does not call the interaction assault. But she aims to describe her discomfort in the interaction. I think it was important to bring it into the dialogue of the MeToo movement exactly because it wasn't rape, yet it fit into the Giant umbrella of our "rape culture". Like in Sam Jay's new special, she scoffs at it as ' any one of us could beat up aziz ansari'. It seemed like a huge gap in miscommunication, and maybe aziz(who contributed to a relationship book) realized it as and after the date itself. If your date says "no", why do you ask her again? And if she already said "no", why did she give in? Can needling be seen as harmful pressuring?-- it can in a culture where we raise men and women how we do. What are we supposed to do about it? Damn, that is over my head, i dont know. it starts with talking. The special was very human, and talking a lot more about his family, and the place comedy has in his life was very humanizing. Places you into his shoes without being defensive.

I like this a lot. Although not sure what more you could've wanted more out of Aziz especially compared to past performances or even with other stand up specials. If you go back through and take a look you can clearly see that this is the most effort he has ever put into a performance. The fact that he is reserved and strip back is a stylistic choice because it emphasizes the punchlines where he absurdly spazzes with the delivery. Please keep making more and maybe talk about the Kevin Heart special about cheating on his wife? It's not good.

Dunno about Aziz, but my feeling about most comedian is that their stories lack strong liners to ponctuate the narrative. At times, it feels more like banter in a bar than something that was carefully re-written multiple times with increasingly perfected gags.
Optimal comedian would have the story-telling of a Bill Burr, Jim Jefferies or George Carlin but with the amount of very strong gags per minutes that Woody Allen had in his late 60s act.

I didn't get the feeling people wanted him to go away. This special felt manipulative. He doesn't apologize -- something I think most people would be feel comfortable with (the simplest thing in the world is to tell someone "I"m sorry, I fucked up") --instead he says "I just felt terrible that this person felt this way" then lectures the crowd about how everyone is shitty, an argument that mirrors the "Everyone is racist" defense. There are a couple good jokes (e.g. spending the weekend with your family), but a majority is neither funny nor particularly heady, but just goes to serve his redemption without actually earning it. Spike Jonze directing, and his blocking/framing is really fresh, and seeing the people backstage is a curious angle I hope to see again.
    Great video

What was he supposed to do? Really think about it, was he gonna joke about it? He had to address it and all he could do was be sincere. It's a no win situation. No one was gonna be satisfied with anything he said and you're naive to think so. Who do you think is talented enough to try to defend themselves against the court of public opinion in 2019?!? You want him to take the Trump approach and claim it's "Fake News"? WTF could he have done that wouldn't have elicited the same response or worse? He chose the path of least resistance.

I loved the special. He stepped up to the moment. Louis special ends in an inceset rape joke. Love Louis, think he's hilarious. Was at the live taping. Still like Aziz' special more because he actually tried t ograppel with something here.
Also love the social experiment in the special with the Pizza bit, was to be honest, brilliant and gives so much potent insight into the state of our hivemind right now.

Being profound & politically correct is NOT comedy.
