  • It's exceedingly rare to see a famous person "begin" a stand-up career. It takes courage, pluck, strength. 🤘 But can you be a successful comedian without having spent years toiling at open mics? Let's talk about JVN's adventures in stand-up comedy.
Do you have a comedian you'd like to see me do a deep-dive on? Comment below

Personalities and public figures being able to do stand up because of their fame is not necessarily new like your video says, but I feel as if the internet changes the game forever. Like, take Bo Burnham for example.
He gathered an audience through youtube/vine/social media and then toured in large venues with a brilliantly, meticulously crafted stand up routine truly unlike anything I have ever seen in comedy. Yet this act is something that I don't think ever would have existed if not for the internet allowing one to rally their own audience first. I remember listening to Bo on a podcast where he talks about how he was literally making adjustments to the show on the road, in front of these massive crowds and that is something which JVN seems to be doing as well. There's a reason Bo never really performs in comedy clubs, he plays to his audience quite well. Props to JVN for going outside of his comfort zone and I think I'm gonna keep an eye out for his comedy in the future.
I believe Gary Gulman said once that if a Comedian can make a room laugh thats great, but if a comedian can make 15% of the room keel over with tears of joy, that's your audience. The internet or fame in general seems give one the ability to circumvent the process of finding an audience in seedy comedy rooms, perhaps its for the better. Only time will tell.
    Anyway, great video.

Another group of people you should look at is old wrestlers. There are a number of old WWF/WWE wrestlers who do one man storytelling/standup shows. Mick Foley, Jake the Snake, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Dolph Ziggler and so on.

@@KatieMears For wrestlers who are doing the stand up thing now, if you want to TALK with them, I would start with contacting Mick Foley. He's a Legend, a mensa member and an extremely nice guy. He also has a couple (i think) specials available on the WWE Network. A little google fu and you can find emails (albeit booking emails) for him, Jake or Hacksaw. Ziggler is a younger guy, on hiatus from WWE to tour, so ya know, he might be interested in the promotional value, too.

It’s a mic sometimes famous people can do really well, Michael Ian Black started doing stand up in his early 30s from his success on the I love the 80s/90s on VH1, he was already pretty big with sketch with Stella and Maron gave him hard time and they have a very real frienemy relationship. Same with Chris Hardwick he got into stand up after he was famous. Donald Glover , Ricky Gervais , Dustin Diamond( Screech from saved by the bell) Charlie Sheen in 2016, pro wrestlers such as Dolph Zigler, Rob Van Dam, Mick Foley. Also Stevo who has earned a lot of respect over recent years , especially from Joe Rohan. Brendan Schaub is only 3 years in , very green still and just had his first special . Henry Rollins makes it a point to call himself more of a spoken word performer rather than a comedian but he did have a stand up special recently . There’s levels and where you are at in your career. Stormy Daniels tried it but now she does more q & a stuff . Josh Peck did stand up at a very young age at the 10 and now he performs at colleges. Tom Green started in his teens and got back into it in recent years. Seth Rogen did it from 12 to 17 years old. It all depends , either the career is on the up and they really put work into it ( Hardwick, Gervais , Michael Ian Black or it’s justa part of the train wreck (
