Five Lessons From Steve Martin's Stand Up Comedy

  • Last week, we discussed George Carlin and how he found an authentic voice as a comedian. This week, we're jumping forward a decade and looking and how Steve Martin built his act, and the five key lessons he learned along the way. Those lessons are essential to his work and his performances, and they helped him to build a career that suited his unique goals and skills.
While Carlin changed organically with the times, Steve's journey was about perfecting his own rhythm and then letting the times come to him.
I can't recommend Steve Martin's book Born Standing Up highly enough, it's perhaps the best comedy memoir of all time. Find it here: www.barnesandn...

I like that you incorporated snippets from his book. It was the perfect type of audiobook to listen to in his own voice.

Steve Martin doesn't often get the credit for it, but he may just be the smartest comedian of all time.

Of course, I have a lot of respect and admiration for Steve Martin. Brilliant comic, writer, actor, and a virtuoso banjo player. Inspired by Steve Martin, I have tried to always have a little bit of goofiness in my five minute stand-up sets. I’m still in the novice stage, only five months in at Open Mics, but my Comedy is still more traditional in structure than what Steve Martin does/did. I don’t think I could do what he does, in terms of his structure, which almost seems like lack of structure. He is a singular talent. I appreciate this video. Thank you.

I've always thought of Steve Martin as like, this really endearing uncle - growing up seeing him in films a lot, I guess I was just always in awe of his easy-going charisma and wonderful absurdity. Really thought the parts about flubbing the magic trick being funnier than nailing it, and the idea of letting the audience 'decide' when to laugh were really insightful. Definitely added to my appreciation for the guy. Thank you, as always!

Your videos are amazing I believe the first time I ever heard of how much of a comedy legend Martin is, was through Cal Newport's blog, that he later turned into a books called So Good They Can't Ignore You. Can't wait for Part 2! Hope your and your loved ones are doing well Katie. :D

This was really cool. I remember when 'King Tut' came out (the song - not the pharaoh), it was HUGE! Steve Martin was super-hot around that time. Didn't he play banjo for The Ozark Mountain Daredevils? Could have been another band - I can't remember.

Sorry deleted original reply about doing something on Letterman. Me not good internet.
But I just read an old tweet of yours where you said Letterman makes your skin crawl so I guess that’s not going to happen:) No worries. Chacun a son gout.
But how about this then? A recommendation. Richard Herring (latest Taskmaster champion) and better half of Lee and Herring (hot take as the kids say) has a twitch show called Ally and Herring’s Twitch of Fun which is uploaded to his CZcams channel after being live on Twitch. It’s a new take on ventriloquism, yes ventriloquism. It’s fun, weird, sad, subversive and is probably one of my favourite comedic creations coming out of this mindfuck of a lockdown. The evolution over 30 episodes is amazing. I hope it’s something you’ve never heard of before because gosh darn you know everything about comedy.
And he had arguably the worst appearance on the Off Menu podcast which in my opinion makes it the best. Maybe it’s old white man comedy but I’m an old white man.
Whoah, this is long comment for someone who openly dislikes engaging on social media but you’ve kindled in me a renewed love of all things comedy. And I’m bored

Hey there. In case you read this, curious if you've read any of Steve's other books outside of Born Standing Up? Most of them are very good. He has a very relaxed tone to his writing that flows. And he inserts very unique and funny details slash metaphors throughout. You may have read them but I recommend Picasso at the Lapin Agile and The Pleasure of My Company.
I also was wondering, since you mentioned the smothers brothers show, are you a fan of Pat Paulsen? I love his weird deadpan delivery of nonsensical lines that always trip him up.

This is so fascinating from the perspective how unfunny as an European I think he is. I'm a big comedy fan but he's almost unbearable to watch. I don't know anyone outside US who thinks he's funny. These kinds of phenomenons inside specific cultures are so interesting. He seems to laugh at his audience and they don't seem to know it. Like emperor without clothes.

    • @mauhuff
      @mauhuff Před 2 lety +1

I don’t find his style of humor funny either. When I do laugh it’s more of an annoyed, “you’re so ridiculous” type of grin I’d give a boyfriend who is trying incredibly hard to make me laugh yet failing then I eventually give in. I just finished his book and it was such a joy. I think the reason Martin’s comedy style affects some others so much is because he performs in every sense of the word. He embodies vulnerability and that is rare with someone who clearly doesn’t care about others’ perceptions of him.
