Yeah, that’s why the lawyer is not saying anything. Anything that can be said will only further damage his client. But I don’t really see any way that she can get out of this. Even the friend was shocked, suggesting this is not typical behavior for her, so she can’t easily bring up the excuse that she’s mentally disabled or something.

I genuinely don’t know how these people get lawyers, but I guess it’s a way of making sure someone is fairly tried in court. And maybe they still get paid if they lose because they’re clearly guilty in this case, I’m not sure.
Actually, it's fairly common for lawyers who are representing you to encourage you not to comment on an ongoing legal situation. They usually want to control as much information as possible to strengthen their case when it eventually gets to court.
The lawyer in this video appears smart enough to not say anything that could potentially damage their clients case any further, and the fact that the news crew is asking the lawyer instead of the girl probably means that the girl has been advised not to comment on the case and is referring everyone to her lawyer.
So it's not that the lawyer isn't defending her. The lawyer just isn't offering an explanation to the media. Which is good for the girl, since the news isn't the right place to defend your client. The lawyer is doing their job and defending their client in court where it really matters.

The woman with her was identified as her roommate and the attacker actions seemed to catch her completely off guard. I haven't seen anything in the attacker's criminal history, so this seems like her first reported crime.
