- A teenager who saved two toddlers from a "massive fire" in High Ridge in July will be recognized as a hero Monday afternoon, the city's fire department said.
15-year-old Savannah Strother was babysitting the two children on July 9 when the home she was in caught fire.
"She acted without hesitation to get a 1-year-old and 3-year-old to safety without any injuries," High Ridge Fire Protection District Fire Chief John Barton wrote on social media. "[She] was at a neighbor's house babysitting two small children when a massive fire broke out, involving both the house she was in and [an adjacent] house."

She was so smart for so many reasons. The dog knew something was wrong and she didn't just ignore him. She investigated and then she acted straight away! So attentive and efficient in this emergency, and at only 15 years old!

She did a good job. She saw something glowing through the door, it would have been safer to feel the door for heat and not open it. That fire could have blasted her and that baby to kingdom come when she opened the door. She got lucky! Would have been safer to exit through a window, but hey! I remember saving my ex's family and house from a fire when her parents were gone, similar situation. Beat out the flames in the attic with my shirt. Firefighters thought I had smoke inhalation. @@Liam-sx3np it depends on the situation. There are so many factors that go into whether a fire spreads quickly or slowly that it's way too hard to say from the bit we see here. It does seem relatively under control in that there seems to be space for them to safely get out through the room that's on fire, but you can see the fire looks to be pretty big already. Who knows if that room is filled with flammables like lots of paper or something else, or if the home is constructed poorly for fire control. It could go from relatively calm to raging and fatal in seconds depending on different factors.
Plus one of the biggest dangers is smoke inhalation which can be insidious, because people know to focus on the hot and bright fire but they may not notice they are suffocating to death in the meantime. Or inhaling dangerous chemicals or toxins that could affect their health or quality of life if they live.
Anyway point just being that she's definitely calm which is awesome, and it's possible you're correct that she's so calm because this has grown slow enough for her to gauge the situation and make plans.
But people react differently in stressful or traumatic situations, so it's also possible she is so calm because she's someone who defaults to that in crisis mode.

Because I lived near this family, my daughter,12, sat for 3 children under 3, for 3 days and 2 nights.
I would periodically stop by
to check on them. First visit zi was surprised to see : laundry folded, dishes done, babies down for a nap and the toys picked up until the next time.
Sooo, some children can take care of other children. Especially if the have siblings at home.

Better yet, when getting them out she not only properly checked out the alert the dog gave her, kept the kiddos together where she could see them, didn’t freak out, kept rational thought processing AND when pulling those babies out she put her own body on the side of the fire.
