- Select 1080 HD. This has been so popular I've now put it up in HD, 12528kbps. (My earlier upload was less than 4,000kbps). Steve's full performance at the Universal Ampitheatre from September 28 1979 from the Steve Martin 3-dvd box set "The Television Stuff." Although the DVD source is clearly videotape, it's not too bad and anyway it's the best quality available. Because this live performance was preceded by a studio based sketch it starts abruptly, but it's complete.
As the DVD's source is clearly videotape, the last thing anyone needs is a weak upload of vintage material, so I took a 1080 HD rip of the standard definition DVD and the best thing about that is CZcams allocates better sound to HD uploads. I hope you enjoy this innovative and inspiring comedy stand up. - Hudba
This concert was filmed in ‘79 at the Amptitheater. It was never shown in it’s entirety til ‘84. Classic Steve Martin. This is the Steve i like. The Wild and Crazy guy persona is iconic. The suit, the arrow through the head, happy feet etc. great stuff. Steve turned stand-up comedy inside out. He mocked it, played with it. He taught audiences and younger comics: it’s ok if u don’t fit Pryor, Carlin, Brenner, or Klein’s style. U can still be funny doing YOUR thing.
A shrewd summary. I have pinned your comment at the top.
Provocateur d'Liberals Thanks. :) I’m a BIG Steve Martin fan. Especially from this period. I read his book too so i guess i got opinions of my own.
@@ghanasoul Born Standing Up is my favorite celebrity memoir. He delivers a succinct but earnest summation of one of how long it took him to attune his entertaining abilities (i.e., magic, banjo playing, sketch comedy writing, acting); how long it took to be an unknown stand-up comic playing cafe open mics to nobody but the owner for him to figure out his on-stage persona; and how long it took for the bitter taste of success to settle in after a wild & crazy rise to the top.

"I do not know if my act holds up these many years later. It is not for me to decide or even think about. Sometimes I hear or see a piece of the old show, and it sounds funny; sometimes I don’t get it and can’t figure out what all the fuss was about." -Steve Martin
Agreed brah,
Im a 2000 kid and this dude rocks.
I feel todays movies are mostly trash stories and ideas (good actors yes, but movies I wobt watch again), the us ones at least.
This is the first time seeing the video. Have the album from when it first came out. Ñow it makes a lot more sense.
Absolutely nuts at that time. We’d never seen anything like him.
Jeff Dawson people. ....it’s just good ole comedy. Enjoy it
Johnathan Winters was like that before Steve. Stream of craziness ❤
The guy is the real deal, he is a comedic giant and can absolutely shred a banjo to pieces. What an absolute legend of a man.
Eddie Murphy entered your bullshit...
Steve Martin is the m************ man
I don't ever remember a crowd going that crazy at the beginning of a stand up. I've watched many from back in the 70's to 80's this man is a legend. It was a great time to be alive
25:57 Dude that comedic timing though. Steve has such a control over his material. The way he changes characters, posture, tone of voice in milliseconds is masterful.
Oh man if only for that joke... This whole show was worth shooting... :D lucky the rest is f amazing too
just read his autobiography book "Born Standing Up". . Took him 14 years of practice and experimentation barely eeking out a living to get it up to this level
The guy just isn’t funny.
He is not. But he can immitate being funny just to fuck with people.
@@waclosh I try, I really do. I love comedy, but this guy is a conman.
I always heard steve was truly one of the goats of stand up. I never seen him live, but incredible. Loved all his movies as an 80s kid. Legend.
I’m just happy he took a different path than Robin Williams. Their comedies are somewhat similar high energy absurdism. But I think Steve seems happy with his music

It's worth pointing out that Steve decided very early in his career to stay away from all drugs, and he stuck to it. Sadly, Robin got sucked down that black hole, which did nothing to help the depression that most comics have. (Steve, too.) When I think of those two guys, who were so similar and had such a monster effect on my youth, I think that's what made the difference in their lives. Miss the hell out of Robin.
Probably the biggest and most popular live comedy act in history... dude was awesome!
He’s been 70 years old for 40 years 😂😂😂
Definition of classic: you can watch it over and over and never stop enjoying it, i.e. Steve Martin
I would extend it if I am allowed.
Classic = TIMELESS. Because... I... am... a... 2000kid... and find this best. Modern movies are utter trash stories and shitting on nerds not ever funny compared to this...
Indeed watched this steves show 3x recently , and.. didnt even finish the last 2018 floppywood movie I dared to touch this evening or rather had to..
25:57 I remember hearing this on a cassette when I was a kid. Thought it was the funniest line I’ve ever heard. Still love him
LOL I still have this LP!
I had it on a record. Lol listened to it a lot
Me andy little brother used to piss ourselves laughing at that line, and it's still my favourite line in an amazing show 😁
This is exactly why I came looking for it on CZcams.
36:14 Someone in the audience actually shouted "YOU'RE NUTS!"
36:07 this had me dying. The way he responded to the random heckle was so natural, you’d think it was part of his act.
Society needs comedy like this again..people seem to have forgot how to laugh at silliness..this country seems to have lost its sense of humor amongst other things..thanks Steve for the forever laughs
I agree but there are too many people that are too uptight about some of the content. Can’t laugh like we used to about anything and everything. They’d be people outraged by some of it like the cat joke for instance. They can’t just laugh they’d be Karen’s everywhere complaining about it.
But I do agree w you we need this again
This isn’t funny
@@Shawn-rq4py there aren't that many of those people out there.
Problem is they are very loud.
True. Steve grew up watching vaudeville legends. He does it all: props, jokes, juggling, singing, banjo, balloon creatures. He doesn't just tell jokes. He's versatile and just likes to have fun with his audience.
My dad introduced me to Steve. He gave me a record for "A wild and crazy guy." (has King Tut on side 2) I fell in love with his style of comedy.
He’s an amazing artist. Not to mention, a phenomenal musician.
As a kid in the 70s I find him the most entertaining comedian.
Haven't heard this in 30 years and it's still one of the funniest sketches I have ever heard anybody do. He is is one of the greatest comics of all time!
Love comedians with energy like Steve and Robin Williams
Me too.
And since I am fan of ERB so I felt sad that they used Robin at the rap battle of stand up comedians, cause I want to see Robin Williams vs Steve Martin.
That woulda been pretty epic!

Forty-one years ago and still as much joyful, silly, absurdist fun as it ever was. I LOVE this guy! So many good memories of listening to his comedy albums with friends and laughing so hard we cried.
Anna knew she had to have a new pair of shoes
I think your math was off?
Huge audience- reading his book, very interesting how young he began. What’s neat is that he is so like-able and fun. ❤️ to Steve!
I didn't like Martin for no reason for many years until I actually watched him on Johnny Carson here on CZcams and realized I wasn't even giving him half a chance. The man is a comedic genius.
Agreed, and btw im a 2000 kid who is just used to not knowing good people and givung them a chance can be fruitful.
Can we just put some respect on this man right here.
We don’t produce artists of this calibre anymore.
Comedian, musician, writer and actor.
Martin along with John Candy and John Hughes made my favourite childhood movie.
Plains Trains and Automobiles.
I watched that film with my dad and we laughed until will cried.
That film has so much heart it’s just beautiful.
I watched it recently decades later and the ending made me cry.
I suppose I’m getting sentimental with age.
Steve Martin like Candy is a legend and should never be forgotten.
The greatest artist to ever live. Only a handful have even came close to the amount of talent. Shel Silverstein is the only other even in the same galaxy as Steve
Forgot how funny he was and how he seems to have not fallen into the dark side of comedians, and is still around!!
You mean by od'ing on drugs? I know what you mean
This brings back so many great memories of my sister and I watching anything Steve Martin. Our humor was totally molded by him. I absolutely love that he is still going strong . He and Martin Short are going on tour and I’m so upset I can’t catch it!!! 😢
It's crazy just how fast paced his stand-up is.
Not as fast as Robin Williams was. I swear he holds the land speed comedy record. However, they were both good!

Imagine seeing this show at the Universal Amphitheater in '78 with The Blues Brothers as the opener! Epic!
My friends and I did as
18 years old kids. SNL was a must watch and Steve Martin was a rock star. The Blues Brothers were amazing and then Steve Martin hits a grand slam. We were fortunate to watch a terrific performance. I remembered almost all the jokes playing this back. Great night and for $9.75.

Truly a performer for the ages.. Imagine how amazing it would have been to see him at this point in his career.
I did. In 1978 at the NY State Fair. He was fantastic.
There is so much great stuff in this set, and that banjo arrangement of "Simple Gifts" at 28:49 is totally beautiful!!!
It brought tears to me.
I went to high school with him in Garden Grove, California in 1961. He was crazy back then. Still is.
Are serious?
I was there in the last row! The Blues Brothers opened. 😁
I was actually wondering if there was an opening act. Thanks! By the way, this is my first time checking this out- this reception is absolutely insane! The applause was 30% of the show. How was he so popular? Did he do small clubs with this material and then a special? I don’t get where all this comedy is coming from
All my nursing school buddies and I went to this show. Fantastic and Blues Brothers were awesome.
This is peak Steve.
This performance is a compilation of some if his greatest work hence the reaction from the audience. If you don't know his work it feels like you've been left out of the inside joke.
It hasn't aged well. Most of this isn't funny.

Okay, Woke Snowflake.
He changed comedy back then. A true genius.
You have to remember this was 30 years ago, times were different. He has some much energy though when he moves on stage and not negative energy or racist stuff. He also isnt afraid to make fool of himself in a good way.

Some context for the year 2021:
In 1979, Los Angeles, at a Steve Martin show, nearly everyone would have smoked weed in the audience.
It wasn't legal. So you waited until the lights went down and everyone lit up.
That's why the lighter tributes, now smartphone flashlights, at rock shows in the 1970s.
It was the "inside d/l" thing to do. You went to shows to rebel and get high in public.
So everyone was high and wasted.
This sort of concert culture would abruptly end the next year.
By 81 ushers were forbidding weed (but not tobacco) at shows. nationwide.
Weird, I watched this when I was high and couldn't grasp on the material. Though when I was sober I laughed in tears 😄 Seeing this live is of course another thing altogether.
When you’re having a bad day just watch this
Steve Martin is a fucking legend, end of sentence.
He's brilliant. Love the clean humor ! ❤️❤️❤️
There's some pretty dirty stuff sprinkled in there. Are you just saying that the clean parts are what you liked? I'd agree with that
*You must have missed the part at @**25:57**!*
Read “Cruel Shoes” and “Born Standing Up”.
This man is an entertainer par excellence.
Cruel shoes is great. I was obsessed with him when I was like 6 years old. I was reading Cruel Shoes in elementary school at 7 years old, and did a book report on it. my teacher was totally confused when i was talking about “how to fold soup” in front of my class. 😂
