- Derek Delgaudio's special IN AND OF ITSELF just dropped on Hulu, you can watch the trailer here: • Derek DelGaudio's In &...
The special is a taped version of a live show run for over 500 performances from 2016-2018 here in New York City, a run that was extended by popular demand three times (!!!) Now, yes, this is a channel about stand-up comedy and In and Of Itself is, by all accounts, a magic show. But it's so much more than that. Today, we're going to talk through the special, discuss the relationship between stand-up comedy and magic, and explore the tools an artist can use to tell their story.

“I want to be reminded of the rich inner life of strangers.”
Goddamn that hit me right in the feels.
why do i hate that sentence even tho im such an emotional and vulnerable person. I dont get this movie
Beautifully said.
OUTSTANDING and touching and perfect and smart and fun and sincere review of something so OUTSTANDING and touching and perfect and smart and fun and sincere. Way to go!
This video was as sincere as the special itself. Now we know a little more about your rich inner life 🙏
telling EVERYONE about this, thanks!
This movie broke me down and built me back up. It’s maybe more so a solo watch but totally worth the watch
I'm on both sides about "do you want to know how it works." I 1000% agree that the emotion and wonder is what makes the show so powerful. However, I'm also curious to know how some of those things are done, pretty much _because_ they're so powerful.
Best Show I've ever seen. Bring your tissues for the intensity of the fun and the truths revealed.
One of the best 90 minutes of tv you'll ever see... and I'd trade every NYC experience to have seen this live
You are incredibly eloquent, I loved this show and have been telling all my closest friends. I’m happy you are sharing with so many more. ♥️
What a phenomenal review! Subbed immediately and I can’t wait to dive more into your content. Thanks for all that you do!
I watched this a couple of days ago and have been in a state of awe ever since, so when your review popped up as a recommendation I had to watch it. It looks like I have found a fellow traveller. Wonderful stuff ❤️
I love it as much as you...I am trying to share it with everyone I know.
Just watched this and I'm an emotional wreck. I loved it
Yup.
Me too
loved the way you described it - thank you
First time seeing your channel and I love your take, I felt exactly the same way after I saw it a few weeks ago. And yes I did tear up just like Derek did and most of the crowd haha. Subbed ❤️
In a show purportedly about "identity" I was perplexed by the producers' (Stephen Colbert and wife) decision to intercut shows to include so many celebrities. I saw the show in lower Manhattan and found it fascinating and enjoyable, even though the play's staff called up the ticket purchaser in my family and invited her to participate in one of the elements of the show.
So that explains the letters
@@hammill444 I was wondering how they did that. Either they where actors in a movie or they where in on it in some way.
What celebrities?
That was awesome, thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts (+1 Sub!!!)
"The Nobody" really got me. I don't really need to know how everything happened, he saw me through a damn video.
I loved your insight. Personally, I didn't cry or get emotional watching this. Probably because I had a bad day before watching it lol. But, your video made me understand his act more profoundly, so thank you!
You look like pam from the office!! and thanks for this videos it was very good and well edited.
What an amazing quote! "I want to be reminded of the rich inner life of strangers."
I just posted that and saw that the previous comment 1 year ago noted the exact same thing!

I Loved it and will what it a few more times... because there is so much to learn from this show. How many shows do you go to where you actually learn something useful. The show really really makes you think not about how he does the magic, but about life and what's important.
Wow- you are an unbelievably brilliant woman. Great video.
Hi. I'm really glad I found this. You have honestly the best perspective on magicians I've ever heard 'cause, well, I am one and my take on "us" is pretty harsh. From my perspective there's very little sincerity in magic, cause a lot of people (if not most) use it as a crutch that replaces a true personality or point of view. But your take about it being one of the most sincere artforms is really sweet and weirdly enough was similar to what I thought of Stand-Up Comedy. Anyway, I really loved the show and was inspired by it, but I also really like your opinion of it (and of magic), it sorta gave me hope about the future of the art form. So thanks :)
I don't think it's a magic show but rather a theatrical performance where there a couple magic tricks.
Either way it is a powerful piece of art.
I BELLY LAUGHED when you said this man is Conor Oberst if he was a magician. THAT is one of the funniest things I have ever heard in MY LIFE! XD
I also just watch In and Of Itself last night and holy shit...i've never used the word profound to describe anything before.
I loved his special and as a big magic fan, among ya know, other things, I didn’t want to know how it was done either. Which is different for me. But his special is different. How often can you say a “magic show” moved you emotionally?
Lovely review, thank you. Subscribed immediately because of it. And thank you for not asking us to like or smash anything. You’re a fresh air breath kinda person. 🙏☺️
Hi Katie, I discovered your channel through this video when I was searching for content about this very special show and it led me to your work on comedy and I just wanted to drop by and let you know how much I enjoy your take on things. So much so that I’ve watched a few of your vids twice, though I haven’t watched them all. I see that you have at least one book by Maron, have you considered doing a video on his progression as a comic? He’s fairly different as a person and performer than he used to be and I don’t think it’s a secret that he’s been pretty intentional about that. Just a thought. Keep up your great work and know that you’re having a positive impact out here in CZcamsLand!
@@KatieMears Awesome, thank you for the link. I’ll check it out. :-)
That spirit cook woman at the end was the only letter he did not announce he just spoke to her ear 🤔
"If Conor Oberst was a magician" LOL
You do a brilliant job selling the show:) def wanna see it!
Actually saw the show & liked it but liked Katie’s description & dissection of the show more than the show;) lol
I did see your on-screen disclaimer about storytelling, but it does exist as its own art form.
Just watching the clips you provided made me choke up a bit. What a great show. Gonna go watch it again. Thanks!
I caught myself crying during this special. It was AMAZING
You're not alone..
6:42 precisely. If nothing else I hope to be able to think back to this show every time I see someone wearing their mask on their chin, and stop myself from passing a deterministic one-sided judgement.
Why am I not swept up into the magic of this? Both my brain and my heart are skeptical - like if I knew how he did that thing with the letters, I’d feel much better. There would be closure instead of the whole time me thinking “wait, how how how did he do this?” I know that’s not the point of the show at all, but as a science person, I want to see the breakdown of how he pulled off his tracks rather than just think, “oh it’s just magic and we’re all a million different types of people wrapped into one entity, buh-bye.”
I'm totally there with you my friend
Here's a hint: Magic doesn't actually exist. We all know it's just illusion and trickery. Then again the fact that lightsabers don't exist or that Captain America is a fictional character doesn't take away from my enjoyment of those movies. The point is: You intellectually know that none of these things are real, but all that's asked of you is to let go of your brain and enjoy the ride.
I must see it now. Thanks.
Damn, I can't see it here.

@@silver-phoenix Thank-you!
Loved this too although I can’t define what it was.
I liked your review. The movie though left me untouched. I didn't quite get the point why the audience became so emotional in such a short time. I stay with some good books by Osho and Eckhart Tolle, they have kind of more substance to the whole topic. The movie and the show was a little too much magic for me.
You get out what you bring to it.
First, and foremost...!
Marina Abramovic and Bill Gates hanging out at this show ...with everything going on in the world surrounding those 2 and the rumors ...how is this not mentioned in anything I have found so far on CZcams?
Roulettista
Just saw the special, then saw your video, and subscribed. You are super cute. I know that might be an inappropriate thing to write, but it's sincere and I felt like sharing. I hope you have a nice day
you're beautifullll ... and niceeee !!!
The storytelling was great, the magic was... a little bit dull, to be honest. My wife was kinda knocked out by his gambling routine but she doesn't watch magic. When you've seen a load of them, it was just another gambling routine. For me, the letters bit was the best. And was that Bill Gates in the audience?
Many other celebrities...
The magic is great but i just dont get the emotion. Help me here.
Talking about a comedy/ magic show, and she doesn't mention Amazing Johnathan.
I’m in the same boat. I said the same thing after it ended. “I don’t care how it was done.” It was that profound. 🪄
