Why We Tell Knock Knock Jokes

Here's a fun quick one. Joke fads come and go, but why do knock-knock jokes have such staying power? Why are knock knock jokes so pervasive, and what role do they serve? Does anyone read this? I promise all my videos won’t be me a little tipsy from now on, it just happened this way 🤷‍♂️

Apparently there's a knock knock 'joke' in Macbeth? Not sure about that. Act 2, Scene 3:

I have developed an different formula for the knock knock joke. You start...
ME: "I have a great knock knock joke.
.....You start..."
YOU: "Knock knock."
ME: "Who's there ?"
YOU:,,, (silence)
This may be a mean trick. I use this joke on hecklers.
