  • Demetri Martin! One of the most intelligent and interesting comics or a twee, nerdy, try-hard? Maybe both? Spoiler alert, I think there's a lot to love about Demetri and his comedy. He's easy to make fun of -- saying your favorite comedian is Demetri Martin is sorta like saying your favorite subject is math -- but he's there's so much to learn from him and his fascinating career trajectory.
Demetri Martin was my first favorite stand-up back in the late 00s, but he seems to have faded a bit from the comedy landscape. For the uninitiated, Demetri doesn't do traditional stand-up comedy that you might be used to, instead, he tells short jokes and one-liners, in the vein of comics like Steven Wright, Mitch Hedberg, or basically any comedian before 1955. In addition to his jokes, Demetri has a habit of bringing all of his hobbies onstage with him, which can include a large pad of his drawings, a guitar, harmonica, poems, three-dimensional crossword puzzles, photography, even clothes he made himself for the show. Today, let's focus on the main things that Demetri has going for him and why we can't overlook his place in comedy. So let's dive in.

It’s so hard to find journalistic discussion of comedy by people who actually give a shit about it and understand the art form. Love this channel and what you’ve done here in this video.

Just found this video/channel. A video essay about comedy and comedians is a new experience and I am here for it.
The closest I have to relate to this is my attempt in a speech class about how comedy is a unifying medium with the ability to change cultures.

I'm a big fan of Demetri, and I didn't know it at the time when I bought the tickets, but I was at the recording of These Are Jokes. It was interesting to hear that they rearranged his sets in the recording then how he told them live. And he cut out some audience interaction he did.

Birbiglia used to do the same style jokes before he did more of the story telling style . Other comics would often be mean and say he was copying Demetri with the similar jokes and using a guitar as well.
I like Mike Birbiglia’s old stand up a lot.

Demetri Martin was also the first comedian I really got into and enjoyed. My favorite now is Gary Gulman, which seems like almost the opposite of DM. Would love to see a video on Joe Pera!

I first became aware of Dimitri Martin when he used to appear on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He would just have a segment, and he was always funny. And so I was very excited when I saw that he had a standup special, which I believe was probably also on Comedy Central. I seen a few of his specials. I think we have similar minds. Puzzle solver. I also am fascinated with words and anagrams, and rearranging the letters in signs. Unfortunately, as I’ve only gotten into stand-up comedy recently, writing for five years, but not doing an open mic until last November, I have to check to make sure I’m not duplicating any of his bits. Even though there is such a thing as parallel thinking. The audience thinks you’re stealing a bit, you just can’t do it pretty much. it’s hard to fight group perception, even if it’s incorrect. Currently, my stand-up comedy is very different than what Dimitri does. Really enjoying your videos. Thank you.

Demetri Martin is better than 95 percent of club comics. I'm assuming. But he is funny af, clever, well written, and amazing delivery. So I don't understand how he could be unpopular among club comics.

Katie, since you're a journalist as well as a connoisseur of comedy, you probably have a bunch of insights or opinions about connections between comedy (in particular, the writing of a comedy routine) and other kinds of professional writing. Are there any similarities, say, between comedy writing (of standup routines) and journalism, or between comedy writing and short-story writing? Are there techniques on either side of the divide that practitioners of the other side don't use (and shouldn't / but should)? In your opinion, what can professional writers learn from comedians and vice versa?
