  • Okay, let's have it out about clapter. Lots to hate, definitely. But maybe to understand clapter we need to talk about pandering itself. Does anyone actually read this? Who knows.

    I was involved with an amateur stand-up competition and the winner did nothing but clapter material: "I've lost weight... I knitted this scarf... I'm single now...". when I discovered the judges assigned points for applause breaks I was livid.

    Thanks for the insight, Katie! Great video! I've wondered what to call this kind of comedy for a while. When comedians are simply making inarguable points, it doesn't strike me as strong comedy (the clips with Billy Eichner were perfect examples). It seems to me that the masters of the form are able to be silly while pointing out systemic/social wrongs. Chappelle for white supremacy, Bamford for mental health, Maron for the overly-emotional/neurotic. Clapter/pandering also encourages generalities, which also doesn't lend itself to good comedy.

      Not going to drop any names, but I don't much laugh from the bigger stars in the stand-up industry because of this obsession on throwing out hackeneyed comments or using very trite setup on and on. I need to be surprised big time for a laugh, and raving about Trans or Trump or Men/Women relationship just make me roll my eyes in boredom.
      Side-note, I am a fan of one-liners, so I tend to be more critical of any other forms of Comedy.

    laughter is involuntarily. a great comedian should be able to make you laugh whether you agree with him or not.

    Katie, I love your shit. It’s very rare to find such in-depth commentaries on stand-up comedy. A lot of the content on CZcams is either surface-level or flat-out incorrect/misled. As a fan of stand-up comedy and someone who wants to really dive deeper into this art form, I’m a really big fan of this channel and I can’t wait for more stuff. It’s both a shame and a mystery why you don’t have a bigger audience.

    Sam Kinison’s later work wasn’t politically correct, but his act had essentially devolved into statements he knew the crowd would be on his side. I guess today it’s considered a form of “edgelord” pandering. God, his later stuff was so awful.

    • @MechaJutaro
      @MechaJutaro Před 3 lety

      Sam Kinison laid the groundwork for CZcams shock jocks like Carl Benjamin, Alex Jones, and Paul Elam. They're all committed to putting out material that's superficially edgy, that will inevitably generate cheap thrills. This stuff ain't deep or challenging though

    Reminds me of small talk and how some people have very strong feelings against it (yet never seem to get to the "big talk" they love so much?). Small talk can often act as a leveling of the field and put everyone on the same page and level of energy, so it makes sense why it's so useful for a host.
    Great video as always about a topic I knew about, but had never given much thought to. Looking forward to what you have next.

    There's very little in the way of comedy analysis on youtube or in written form. You're really good at this! (I'm pandering whoops) ... I wonder if you'd enjoy the book "The Eight Patterns of Humor" by Alastair Clarke. Free download available online.

    I just recently got fired from a show that exclusively uses Clapter and Pandering. At first, I hated the show then I realized it was for people who need this kind of comedy because it's the only way they can really enjoy themselves. Humor that is more challenging doesn't interest them that's either not their taste or they haven't matured enough to enjoy anything better. Long story short I think that this type of humor deserves the same amount of criticism as Pepsi or Coke 0.

    I think there is an open mic version of clapter where comics will shit on the idea of doing comedy to win the room back. Which is sort of hilarious, because its the opposite to the optimistic tone of clapter, but to the same effect.

      and on that same line, there is also transgressive 'clapter' like we're seeing out of NYC with the Legion of Skanks and The Stand. People who just bully and harrass other people and hide behind 'we just mock everyone' while coddling literal white supremacists.

    It's crazy that I spent most of my adult life in groups that would have seen that video as aggressively immoral. Even now to hear it described as aggressively wholesome is strange. I wouldn't call it wholesome. I see the human animal in a certain light. Full of delusions. Stuck in their own personal and social _umvelts_ out of which they can rarely escape and if they do they are tossed on the wild waves of existential despair. Stay in the bubble, ask no questions, defend to the death.

    A thought just occurred to me: if a comedian says something that elicits clapter in the setup of a joke, that's fine by me, provided there is a punchline or reversal or whatever that completes the joke and makes me laugh. Clapter shouldn't replace laughter, but it can be gravy on your mashed potatoes.
