How Rodney Dangerfield Became Rodney Dangerfield

  • Rodney Dangerfield! Other comedians might have pushed the form more, other comedians might've been more inventive or more nuanced, but there's nobody alive or dead that's better at straight up -- old school -- stand up comedy. No one can compete with him in laughs per minute. The guy is a machine. He's the best at what he does, even though he was sorta late to the party. And not only was it a weird time for him to get huge with that style, it was a weird time in his life. Let's talk through it.
    Last video, I talked about taking time away, to allow myself to be sad and to return to comedy when things weren't so sad. And that's exactly what happened to the comedian we're gonna talk about today. He was having a rough time, he wasn't enjoying it, wasn't great, wasn't finding success. He stepped away from comedy, and then, a decade later, he came back and had one of the best careers in comedy history. Today is all about second chances and new beginnings.

    All you need to know about Rodney is in the list of comedians that attended his funeral, they crossed so many decades & genres. No one did more for young comedians than Rodney behind the scenes, to say nothing of his Young Comedians show on HBO. Rodney introduced me to so many amazing comedians on those shows, and I thank him for giving them a platform.

    Just discovered your channel and your delivery and infectious enthusiasm already has me hooked! I’m fortunate to have a father who was a fan and student of classic vaudeville style humor so I grew up appreciating the classics. I can’t tell you how many times he told my brother and I when we were kids the Groucho joke about shooting an elephant in his pajamas. It didn’t matter how many times he told it I laughed just the same. I always loved Rodney. Now I’ve got kids and I enjoy zinging one liners at them aka dad jokes. Maybe you’ve heard this one but it’s my favorite;
    What do you do when you see a spaceman? You park man! 😆
    Thanks for the great content, I’ll keep following, and keep on smiling cause when you’re smiling the whole world smiles with you! 🎶

    I did not know there was a Ronnie Dangerfield game. I will definitely have to look for this. Thanks for letting us know. Ronnie was one of my favorite comedians. And I enjoyed his acting appearances. Looking forward to finding out more things I don’t know.

    I found your channel via the James Acaster video, and I only really know British comedians so it's great to find out all this stuff about the history of US comedy. Also just the obvious joy you have about comedy, love it!

    That plaque just randomly being in the middle of an outside dining area is kinda sad, but also hilarious, and somehow perfect for Rodney. Still no respect!

    Another fantastic, informative video. Your affection for your subject (especially here) is absolutely contagious and so incredibly engaging. Thanks for giving me a whole lot of info about a very funny guy I wouldn't have known all that much about otherwise.

    You need to watch The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, because it's kinda like your Dirty Dancing idea, and after watching ten minutes of this video I'm sure you would love that series! But great researching job for this video. That game was a great find!

    First of all, you’re incredible. I have a podcast where I’m doing the exact same thing as you and I’m not sure how, but I’d love to collaborate on some comedy breakdowns. Long shot for sure, but my podcast is called Comedian Ordinaire just in case. Keep up the amazing work
