Q&A and the Best Comedy Specials of the Decade

  • I take questions from Instagram, Twitter and the comments section! We talk about comedy specials, live shows, open mics, favorites, international stand up, and CZcams. If you have a question, maybe I'll have to do a part two later on! All in all, this was very fun. I've been busy with my new job and with doing some freelancing but I'm excited for all that 2020 has in store.
ALSO I announce a video I made in collaboration with Vulture! It was so exciting and flattering to get to work with them on a video essay about the best stand-up comedy specials of the decade.

Love your videos! Glad to see you pop up on my feed. Worried you had stopped doing these because I find them very thorough and insightful. I look forward to whatever you have coming. Also, understandably you have used comedians that are no longer with us or might not be as popular as they once were. Ever considered doing an analysis on someone like Bill Burr? And his style? Just curious. And also someone who is no longer with us: Bill Hicks. I must be on a Bill kick haha. Anyway I hope you keep doing what you do, thanks!

Bill Burr has been on point this past decade. Take your pick.

I’ve been watching since the early days, and I must say you don’t get nearly as many views as you deserve. As a student and practitioner of this wonderful art form I agree that it is under appreciated, and so are you, keep up the great work! I need these videos.

No joke, I just got on CZcams to see if you uploaded another video. Always happy to see your stuff. It’s nice to see someone else who scrutinizes standup

Also I would looove a video on Demetri Martin (though I’m not entirely sure what it would be about), or just one-liner comedians in general. I had the same experience you described when I listened to Standup Comedian. I would pause and just process his jokes and ideas, and it made me think about the structure of standup comedy more deeply. Still one of my favorite albums (haven’t been able to watch the video recording yet).

What constitutes a “special”? Isn’t it an hour (or so) that’s filmed and released? I love These Are Jokes, but is there a video recording of it? (if so I’m watching it ASAP)

Katie Mears the Inland Empire comedy scene is very new. Lots of comics 1-5 years in. Lots of shows in dingy bars on Tuesday nights lol. It's very raw

You really must check out UK comedian, Stewart Lee, you would love him.

Katie Mears Hmm, yeah, it's difficult because he is so unapologetically UK-cultural reference heavy... but maybe this (following link) which involves a put down of Top Gear, a popular car show on BBC America you may be familiar with??, and it's presenters... and which briefly refers to a former slightly vision impaired prime minister, Gordon Brown, and to the arts precinct of London (the South Bank), and the right wing newspaper The Daily Mail... [here is a quick video of the somewhat crass presenters of Top Gear czcams.com/video/cwxRoPv3-vw/video.html ] Here's the clip... czcams.com/video/K7CnMQ4L9Pc/video.html

@@KatieMears "Stand up comedian" and all the newer specials, but this first one is probably the least "out there"

Just watched your 6 "best" stand-up comedy specials of the decade on Vulture. First of all, I hope in the next decade we can distinguish between objective one subjective when we talk about art. Stand-up is art, art is subjective. The word "best" is an objective adjective. Secondly, you're ignoring the comedy zeitgeist and what is popular in comedy and what most people really like which detracts from your credibility and makes you seem out of touch. The fact that Chappelle didn't make your list with any of his specials says a lot about your subjective opinions about comedy. Replace the word "best" with "my favorite" and you'll be back on track.
