How Gary Gulman is Changing Stand-Up

  • Gary Gulman! One of the best. A look into the work behind his material and the incredible, risky way he hacked (usually banal) stand-up comedy on late shows. Fun stuff.
Think of this as the other side of the spectrum from the Rory Scovel video. Two of my all-time favorite comedians with completely different stylings -- opposites but both doing exactly what works for them :)

This is so impressive Katie! Thank you for putting a spotlight on one of the kindest, most beautiful guys I've known. Gary is a brilliant comedian. He's the writer I wish I was. George Carlin and Gary on same video is sublime. I've subscribed. Look forward to more content. Great job. JJ

Gary Gulman is one of the best articulators I've ever heard. In This Economy is one of the best stand ups I've ever seen. He's amazing. And this is a great video. Excellent job. I say that as a Gary Gulman fan. This is a really great video.

I truly thank you for giving credit to Gary Gulman, my favorite comedian, with this video. I, unfortunately, found Gary's sets a lot later than I would've wanted to. I watched and listened to comedians since the age of 4 and always love understanding their personal process of the writing and executing. When I found Gary's material I was overwhelmingly shocked at how amazing he was. Story telling jokes are my favorite because it's all on the performance/execution. He's so talented at making every sentence of the story very laughable.

I just discovered him. What I like most about him is how erudite he is. There are not a lot of comics who are so nakedly highbrow.

It's funny, I like a wide range of comedians..and delivery styles. I just love Zach's sarcastic stuff, Steven Wrights deadpan one liners, and recently discovered Gary Gulman.
I can listen to him all day.
    I'll leave with this...
Imagine if Jeff Goldblum and Christopher Walken we're stand up comedians?! They way they speak makes you smile before you laugh if you get what I mean.
They are already half-way there...just need a nice written set and they would kill it on stage.

I think your observations about this solid comedian are pretty spot on Katie. I listen to No Can Defend, In this Economy, and Convos w/Inanimate Objects EVERY NIGHT (they're my white nose to fall asleep to 😂). I was pretty reserved about the basis of your opinions, but I long ago recognised the genius of his writing, and when I started to watch, saw that you recognised it too! Then you named the late, and very great, Mitch, and all doubt l had disintegrated. Well put!

If you, or someone you know suffers from depression or anxiety, I implore you to see The Great Depresh. I was watching it for the third time this month, awash in emotion for this brave, vulnerable, honest and incredibly funny man. I turned to my wife to say, I don't know what it is about this guy, but-"He's you, Spanky. He is you.", interrupted my ocassionally casually dismissive, but very astute, and loving wife of fifteen years. Even in her exaggerated way, my wife was not wrong, but you don't have to be a big sensitive guy of a certain age with an expansive lexicon to take something away from this stand up special. I think Gary Gulman could actually be saving lives with The Great Depresh, while still keeping it funny AF

There's an intellect behind being silly, charming and clownish too. He's done jokes like that as well like the hierarchy of cookies and No Can Defend. Showing us his intellect is not what makes him a great comedian, it's his gift for knowing what makes people laugh. It's his ability to observe absurdity in everyday things.

I like your analysis of Gary Gulman's comedy, and I am a huge fan of him. However, I feel you should come up with a more specific work for "gross" because I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that. The word seems to be very general and I'm not sure it really applies to comedy (unless the comedy is specifically meant to be gross).

This is also a large part of what is called "anti-comedy". A style in which the established tropes and structures of comedy are willfully violated, crowd work and "hiding the seams" being among the most integral parts of traditional comedy structure. One of the first in the modern era is the British Alternative comedian Stewart Lee.
