Hi Dale - Another great Lost in the collection video. I really enjoyed the ones where we have to guess which records you will keep and which ones will be departing the collection. It is a shame that your Work Commitments mean a pause in the series. I can’t get Sledgehammer out of my head and I keep getting flashbacks to the plasticine animations with a train etc etc. That Otis and Carla record looks great. I look forward to the return of this series in due course. Enjoy your summer. Cheers Bill

Hi Dale. The Grace Jones album is brilliant. I love the production on her 80’s Island records. They sound wonderful. I’ve just been saying in my latest video about the Buzzcocks comp. Everyone should own a copy. I really like the first three albums but, to be honest, I usually just go for the comp when I want to listen to them. Cheers

Hello Dale! A little of Tim Buckley's voice goes a long way for me. He's one of those artists whose voice I think is wonderful, but find hard to listen to for a prolonged time. Rufus Wainwright is another. Although, I can listen to early Leonard Cohen without thinking his voice is whiny. Cheers - Hed

Quality ramble. Nuff said. Think I'd miss Leonard Cohen's voice doing his songs it's just so unique not that I like it all. I came home in an odd mood the other day I often ponder culls and listened to hex (a repress cost me about 20£ dramatically up in price) by bark psychosis very undecided about was it good or not. Rambling, discordant at times. I don't think summer music necessarily suits the summer to me. Too predictable. Fruit flying around Peter Gabriel's head again oh dear.

I agree Morning Glory is a stunningly beautiful song..although I am quite selective with Tim Buckley..I loved his reading of Fred Neils' Dolphins. I don't own any Buzzcocks, I would buy them if I saw them, but I don't sadly. That Otis and Carla album is OK, my copy isn't great sounding, so I don't enjoy playing it. We all go through such periods Dale when it's hard to muster up the energy to record a video - I know I do which is why I could never stick to a schedule like many video makers. Most people online seemed to think RSD was good this year, but for me not so. I only picked up one item - post the actual day - and that proved to be a big mistake! That Inventions in Radio sounds intriguing, but not one I'd probably listen to again after it's initial play. • @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893

Hello Dale. I love the esoteric "music" you present. You definitely have your own corner on the VC, where your Bandcamp and other choices always intrigue. Invensions For Radio sounds fascinating. It clearly owes something to Ewan MacColl and Charles Parker's late 50s Radio Ballads. I was familiar with Barry Bermange's name as a writer of radio plays, after coming across him during the research for my masters thesis. But I wasn't able to source any of his plays. I'm not sure if by the time of the early 60s if the division in the BBC between the Radio Drama and Features department was still in place. Generally the output from both was very different, but at times the Drama department felt they were having their toes trodden on. Perhaps one of the best known BBC radio play productions is Dylan Thomas' Under Milkwood broadcast in 1954, was actually a product of the Features department. I know the Radio Ballads was also a product of the Features Department, so it would be safe to assume Invensions For Radio also was. I did find a reference to Invensions For Radio in the book, British Radio Drama, but it's not a glowing endorsement. David Wade writes of the use of the Radiophonic Workshop in practice; "Radiophonics is, or ought to be, an immensely powerful aid to certain kinds of imaginative, invisible drama - creation sounds that never were to evoke worlds that might be; yet it has proved extremely difficult to produce convincing results, and this seems to be chiefly because electronic sound, being itself artificial, tends to dehumanise. This was apparent even in such remarkable features of the early sixties as Barry Bermange's Invensions For Radio, where a background of electronic sound set against snatches of recorded interview, though spellbinding to begin with, gradually bled the human voices of all meaning." We'll, there you go. I'm sure you might have a counter take, probably as your interest is primarily the landscapes. Or do you? As someone whose interest in Radio Drama waned after spending the best part of eighteen months listening to, researching and writing about radio plays a features, I'm not sure if I'd take to these Invensions For Radio? Sorry of the info dump, but I thought you might find it if interest. Cheers - Hedley

    • @gatefold33
      @gatefold33 Před 21 dnem

Hi Hedley - great insight, thanks for taking the time to capture it, very interesting. I guess I would add two points to what was said at the time. 1. The music was in its infancy then and has influenced the development of modern electronic music since, so I think fair to regard it in that light. Maybe also there was a snobbishness about this crude approach elbowing out the more established, and costly, orchestras. 2. On the radio show itself, as well as the Radiophonic Workshop connection, I think it also has the added benefit of being a time capsule of social history now. This might add some importance now, compared to when it was just another contemporary piece of art...cheers Dale

PiL seem to be drifting into 2 records at 45 rpm which should be a single album at 33rpm. Several artists also eg I recently picked up a Cramps record an album and it’s 45 rpm. So for me it’s single record 33rpm, 35 to 40 mins but not quite so worried about number of tracks eg 9 or 11 but agree optimum is 5+5. I love The Sound, great band, one of the finest post punk bands for me. I saw them for the first time in 1982 with The Comsat Angels, just brilliant. Adrian Borland went on to do some really interesting projects post Sound. There is a fascinating DVD about him called ‘Walking in Opposite Direction’ that is really worth seeing. Mike

Hi Mike, I'm with you on 33rpm (I am Gatefold33 after all..). Although with 2024 being the year of the 12" single for me I am appreciating the 45rpm fidelity that provides. However I will definitely resist falling down the 45rpm audiophile rabbit hole for albums (I can't afford it!). I will try and find that Adrian Borland film for a watch. Cheers Dale

  • @soundsfromthewestcoast9939

Hi there Dale, I like longer epic tracks so don't agree with Rob on this (sorry Rob). Close to the Edge is only 3 tracks and it's the greatest album ever made, along with Magma's MDK which is basically just one track - though both are around the 38 minute mark. So your theory wins out over Rob's. However I do have single albums that are 50-60 minutes in length that are excellent. Does this only apply to studio albums? What about live albums, should they only be around 40 minutes? For me no, the live double album is a staple of rock - always disappointed when they are only singles eg Stones Ya-Yas and Focus's Rainbow albums. Cheers... Pete

Enjoyed this. Also love Camera Obscura. Current favourite is the new one by Dana Gavanski which is in a similar vein and reminiscent of the more recent stuff by Cate Le Bon. Its near perfect I reckon. Vital stats: 5/5 41:46 Cheers

Hi,Chris here(I share an email address with my wife). Love your channel but don't think I've ever felt like commenting before. Surely The Go-Betweens deserve a mention, near perfect at the old 5 and 5. Thanks to you I pulled out my Camera Obscura albums which I haven't listened to in a while. A real treat.

Hi Chris, comments are my favourite part of making videos, so glad you decided to make one. Go-betweens certainly fit into the category perfectly. I only have three of their albums, with '16 Lovers Lane' being my favourite. That's 5+5 and 37 minutes so would definitely scrape into the range. Cheers Dale

Hi Dale - I think you and Rob are both correct. When CDs emerged, I was happy with the added length, but it seems so many had filler or things that would have been b-sides. I am actively looking for early albums from the Sound and Blue Nile, but both are very difficult to find.

Good luck with the search Brian. I has a copy of The Sound's debut in my hands a couple of years ago. The cover was a bit grubby and it was £50 but looking back I wish I had bought it as not seen a copy since...

It's an interesting concept for a video, although I have to say that I don't have a preference for album length, so long as it holds my attention. Amarok by Mike Oldfield is 1 hour exactly and can hold my interest as a single song if I'm in the mood. Some great titles Dale, Sandy is my favourite of hers. Stand Up is far less Bluesy than the debut after Mick Abrahams departure and sets the template for Anderson going forward into the 70s..Beautiful songs like Wait for The Sun and We Used to Know. I have Moonshine and enjoy it, although I've not played it that much. A Walk Across The Rooftops is a very atmospheric listen and works well with longer tracks. Agreed Oh Mercy! is a terrific album, Man in the Long Black Coat is one of my favourite Dylan songs. All the best. Rob.

Thanks Rob, I do enjoy Tull's debut but agree they progressed further as they moved forwards, right up to the late 70s. The first two Blue Nile albums are highlights in my collection...enjoy the weekend

The early Tull stuff is very good. That Blue Nile, Sandy D and even the Dylan are good albums to revisit. That was the last Dylan album that I listened to. I was not let down. I like the variety. Well done and thanks for sharing your revisit Dale~ Rob/Boston
