      I'm on the VC right before work, so I saw your message. Thanks for getting back to me and have a nice evening After 6pm, I believe ? See you soon on yours..

    I remember quite well the great purge of 2023, that was something. Thank you for showing a guilty pleasure Dale, though I was hoping it was going to be a Millie Vanille Slightly disappointed. The neighbors no doubt enjoyed hearing relax lol. It’s great how much music you pulled to relisten to. We all need to do that more.

      There seems to be some love in the comments for Pleasure Dome, so I may be pumping out Relax in the garden come next summer...

    Hi Dale, some great selections there for sure. That Fotheringay album is fantastic I played that just last week. I can always tell a great album if I don’t put it away again after a spin it sticks around for another spin or two as that one did! Frankie are a guilt free listen, surely?! I would say Relax and Two Tribes are two of the great 80’s singles. I also really like the title track and Power of Love, but yes much of the rest is not amazing I agree it would have made a killer single album. Have a great weekend cheers

      Frankie seems to be getting some love in the comments which is helping to take away any lingering guilt. I have/had 12" Relax and Two Tribes and my sister had 12" of Power of Love...Agree classic 80s singles (another video coming in that vein). Enjoy your weekend too, cheers Dale

    Evening Dale. I'm a fan of Street Legal too, the CD version sounds really tremendous. I'm not a fan of the lyrical sentiments on much of Dylan's Christian albums, but musically I like them particularly Slow Train. I had an idea that Nic Jones was Welsh, but I checked and it seems he isn't. There is a well-known Welsh folk singer called Nic though I think, or maybe I'm making that up. I would never describe Pleasure Dome as a guilty pleasure, a production masterpiece from the the greatest pop producer of the eighties. Captain Sensible also had an album called The Power of Love in the eighties didn't he?? Love Damnation by Opeth; the other one I really like is Blackwater Park but I haven't managed to get into any of the others.

      Hi James - Pleasure Dome seems to be getting some love in the comments, so that's helping to ease the guilt levels (I'll be playing it outside at BBQs come next year...). Blackwater Park is also a favourite, as are most of the middle period Opeth albums to be fair (I have 11 of their albums in total)...cheers Dale

    Good weekend to you Sir. Twas a good Trunkage Groovy Fayre last sabbath (certainly for myself at least) - I'll pop a video out very shortly over the next day or week, or so. It feels like what you showed too very autumnal now and I'm driving about alot with work so I can at least listen to some music when out on the road as haven't at home for a while now. My guilty pleasures in 1984 were far more embarrassing that FGTH. Always thought that Warriors of the Wasteland was a brilliant track. Seems quite poignant as we return to 1984 threat of wars and rumours of wars again. I even see there is a new play in Hackney of 1984 on which looked good. I didn't know so much the other ones you showed though am familiar with them in the VC and the shelves of shops. Tom Gruff takes a bit of getting used to. Some Bob does too.

      Hi Martin - I'd love to see a video about the Fayre, I was tempted but was travelling up north for work on Sunday...A 1984 play sounds interesting, I'll look into that. Yes I tend to go for male singers who can't sing...

    Hi Dale, sorry for the lateness of this comment - trying to catch up with my VC video watching.
    Some classic stuff shown. Fotheringay - classic of 70s folk riock. Really like Blue Valentine - Christmas card is a great song. I've got a reissue of the Nic Jones - would love to get his earlier albums, but on the rare occasion I see one it's so expensive - they really should be reissued.
    I was disappointed with Street Legal the first time I heard it (except for Senor) - possibly because of the production as you mentioned. But it's really a grower and I really like it now.
    HotMG - absolute classic with 4 of my favourite Hawkwind tracks - Psychedelic Warlords, You'd Better Believe It, Lost Johnny, and Paradox.
    Never heard of Time Is A Mountain, but you have me intrigued - will check them out.
    Oh dear a dip into the 80s! But I have to confess that while most of Frankies singles I did not like, I really did like Two Tribes - used to have an extended cassette single if it. I bow my head in shame.
    Was always put off Opeth by the cookie monstet vocals - should probably give their later work a listen.
    All the best...Pete

      @gatefold33  Před 9 měsíci +1

      And I'm sorry for the lateness in replying Pete - it wasn't deliberate just been super busy. The two earlier Nic Jones albums I got recently were quite pricey but fair (if that makes sense)...No shame in Frankies Pete, your secret love of the 80s is gradually coming out...Later Opeth is worth a listen...cheers Dale

  • @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893

    Now then Dale.
    A smorgasbord of records which are right up my street.
    Blue Valentine is sandwiched between my two least favourite Waits albums Foreign Affairs and Heartattack and Vine. His beatnik boho troubadour schick was wearing a bit thin, you can practically hear him losing interest on Heartattack.
    Penguin Eggs is a wonderful album. Nic manages to play traditional folk in a manner which makes it sound so modern and vital without having to plug in the electric guitars. Those earlier albums are pricey these days. I'd love to see them reissued, it's a travesty how the Trailer catalogue and master tapes have been mismanaged...But I think we've been over that before. We lost a massive talent as a result of that car accident. I did watch some footage from a recent concert where he took to the stage again with his son playing guitar. It was heartening to see.
    This week I got a package from the lovely Ben Costello. He sent me a Sonny Condell solo album and the first record by his post Tír na nÓg band Scullion. Both great. I must try to get the first Tír na nÓg album on vinyl. I'm off to the York record fair tomorrow, so I'll see if I can find a copy.
    I like Street-Legal, its a pretty unique sounding album in Dylan's catalogue. Almost 1970s commercial. I love the version of Señor on the soundtrack to the film I'm Not There, by Willie Nelson and Calexico. It makes you wonder why Dylan didn't think of using Mariachi trumpets on the original? I can't listen to Dylan's version without adding the trumpets in my head.
    Must get me the Fotheringay album some time.
    Cheers - Hedley

      @gatefold33  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi Hedley, I've avoided Foreign Affairs but enjoy Heartattack and Vine - must revisit it as hadn't noticed if he was losing interest.
      I think I also saw a programme a few years ago where Nic Jones made an appearance, I think it was about Cropredy.
      Good to hear about Ben, I hope he's doing well and would love him to start making videos again (especially Folk, less so the hip-hop). I have an eBay saved search for Sonny Condell in the hope of finding both of those albums.
      I recently got I'm Not There CD at a boot sale and Senor is a stand-out.
      Cheers Dale

    Hi dale.. I was so excited wondering what your guilty pleasure would be ! .. I’d never guessed it would be fgth.. I always liked the version of born to run .. and two tribes is a classic. Maybe that confession would have made a decent stand alone video. Cheers dale 👍

    I really enjoy that Tom Waits album and I think it starts out great with his cover of the West Side Story song "Somewhere" which works perfectly with his gruff voice. It has probably been a while since I listened to Street Legal. I doubt that it was five years though. I do like that Goldfrapp cover and an album to check out. Cheers.

    Yes. Great chat and about FGTH. As their record label were situationist prankster, I wished they’d just put a full length version of the three singles & ‘welcome’ on each side, so it would have been a four track double album..& people would essentially just be buying the 12” singles again!

    • @gatefold33
      @gatefold33  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi Harris - I had the 12" Relax and Two Tribes at the time and my sister had 12" of Power of Love. Side-long versions of those plus the title track would have been fine by me...cheers Dale

    Fotheringay is a solid album for sure, although I prefer Sandys' first 2 solo records.
    Tom Waits is an artist I've yet to really dive into..I've been advised to try his early efforts as an entry point...but who knows!.
    I passed on that Nick Jones album last year..perhaps a mistake?.
    Ah, Hall of the Mountain Grill..now your talking, this is up with my favourites of theirs along with Quark, Strangeness and Charm and Roadhawks.
    No need for any guilt on Welcome to the Pleasuredome..the singles were great and the title track is a Trevor Horn masterpiece..( with some help from Steve Howe).
    ok, you can argue it's of its' time and the ' Sisteen Chapel of 80s pop excess' but is/ was that such a bad thing??...I've ceased trying to be smug and scathing about the 80s, because I find myself playing a fair bit if 80s pop stuff these days..ooh, theres' an admission!.
    Have a great weekend Dale.

      Hi Rob, yes Tom Waits earlier albums up to Small Change are probably a good place to start. If you see Penguin Eggs again I'd say grab it. Several comments showing some love for Pleasuredome and I agree the title track is great. Good to hear you are getting into the 80s vibe...cheers Dale
