    Great stuff Dale. The Smiths might be the first band I was really into - it was them and/or the Housemartins anyway. Like you before that it was singles I think they’re the bands that got me into the album as a format. I’m glad you’re a fan of Lee Hazelwood, I particularly love anything by Nancy and Lee the contrast in their voices is wonderful. Jazz wise it was John Coltrane I struggled with for a good while.

      I wish I had got into The Smiths at the time but they didn't jump out at me then...I love Nancy and Lee both their solo work but especially together...I've not cracked Coltrane yet but found a load of his CDs cheap at a boot sale recently, so it may be kill or cure over the winter...

      @@gatefold33 much like Morrissey and Marr it’s the same with Nancy & Lee they’re great on their own, but there’s real magic with the two of them together no doubt! I had a couple of Coltrane CDs in the car that I listened to on repeat just in the background like and eventually I learned to like it, i think that’s how it went anyway lol! Cheers Dale

    I would have Genesis on my list too, Dale. I was not interested in the Gabriel period proggy albums and the 80's commercial albums were a hard pass - then I picked up on Trick Of The Tail and that became a favourite album and I now appreciate many of their other 70's albums.
    I recently found Nancy In London (from '66) in a lot of albums that includes the song duet with Lee Hazlewood, Summer Wine - he wrote the song and produced the album, a cool lounge vibe.

      Hi Richard - Summer Wine is one of my favourite of their duets. I'm never sure on my copy of Nancy in London if she has been superimposed onto the bus...

    Enjoyed this Dale. Wouldn’t have guessed you’re a Lee Hazlewood fan. I’m going to give this one a good think before attempting Mike’s thread. Cheers.

    Great response. I can't think of anyone off the top of my head that I didn't care for initially and eventually warmed up to them. I still have problems with Genesis but I do enjoy the other artists you featured. Bob Dylan was an artist I loved right off the bat and I do like quite a few artists who have voices with a lot of character.

    Really interesting Dale. I’m struggling with this one. Possibly King Crimson? & strangely I’ve developed a bit of love for ZZ Top in the last few years. I literally started trying to rebuild all the Smiths 12” singles at the start of my VC career. In 30 months I’ve found about 10? None under £15.00. I’ve hit a slump in the last 6 months & found none.

    The Queen is Dead is definitely an essential listen. As is the rest of The Smiths catalog. Which is not large as you know. But essential. Cool response Dale. Sorry it took so long to track down your channel. I subbed. Well done~

    Hi Dale, thanks for your excellent response. I was a Genesis can from the start but I thought they went off the rails after "And Then There Were Three". Led Hazelwood is someone I always associate with Nanci Sinatra and I'm not too familiar with his solo albums. Enjoyable video Cheers Mike

    I think Genesis Live was probably the first album I bought by them but agree Selling England is the one which is most likely to win converts.

    HI Dale We were waiting for you to tell us what the other three Genesis albums are. I came to them over a long period of time also; I thought it was interesting that in later years Phil Collins moved to distance himself and Genesis from other prog bands of the era like Yes and Floyd. I guess they had a quirkier, almost comedic side to them, at least in the Gabriel years. Floyd and Yes took themselves very seriously though, increasingly so as time went on in fact.

    • @gatefold33
      @gatefold33  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Hi James - Promise not to tell? Trespass, Foxtrot, Selling England and Trick of the Tail...Yes have now been expunged from the collection...

    Great stuff Dale. I'd be interested in your opinion on Neil Young. He's a pretty "marmite" artist.
    The next thread should be artists you have never liked and can't understand what the fuss is all about. Two who feature a lot on the VC are Queen and XTC would be my choice. Another thread would be artists you loved and are "meh" about now. Elvis Costello would be my choice.

    • @gatefold33
      @gatefold33  Před 10 měsíci

      Interesting - Neil Young is an artist I'm hot and cold on. I have ignored his reissue campaign of the past few years. I do love Harvest Moon from 1992 though...I'll let you start that other thread...

    Lanegan initially with grungey screaming trees no but solo his own music his vocals work. I'm very much been thinking distinctive voices only work with the band they are with so Mozza - The Smiths for example wouldn't work with anyone else. Genesis I don't particularly click with either singer. Cohen I get as same with Nancy & Lee just work together must be the chemistry.

    • @gatefold33
      @gatefold33  Před 10 měsíci +1

      No to grungey Lanegan but definitely yes to his later work...Later Cohen really worked well with the female backing vocals...

    Hi Dale - interesting thread - the older you are the more of these you have - Dylan I agree - Davis I get but played A Kind Of Blue and Sketches early on and got hooked -still have problems with bitches - fascinating thread - folk and singer songwriter and funk have been genres that i didn't like early on

    • @gatefold33
      @gatefold33  Před 10 měsíci

      Thanks John, the singer-songwriter genre can be a minefield...come to think of it you also need to tread carefully with funk and folk too...

    I was never a Genesis fan until hearing The Lamb and Selling England..still can't get on with Phil Collins era, although Trick of the Tail is decent.
    I'm the complete opposite with Dylan, I think his songwriting and vocals have nosedived in recent years..I bought Rough and Rowdy Ways but ended up selling it, as I couldn't deal with his non existent voice.
    Smiths were a slow grower for me too, I think I was too into rock in the 80s to be bothered with the Smiths and I found Morrisseys ' vocals annoying.
    Not so now, I think his lyrics are clever and inspired and Johnny Marr is a fabulously creative musician.

    • @gatefold33
      @gatefold33  Před 10 měsíci

      Trick of the Tail is one of my four Genesis albums but Lamb Lies got purged. I think Rough and Rowdy Ways is OK but is probably the end of the line for me...

  • @stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147

    I still have not gotten into Peter Gabriel Genesis. It was and still is too far out there for me and very hard to dance to. I love rhythm and beat The Smith took me awhile, did not like them in the 80s, now I’m cool with them. Dylan, hated him for years, now I don’t mind him but don’t love him. Nice list Dale
